THE 3IORMXG OREGOXIAN, SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 1909. 15 FIX STORAGE RATES Grain Men Appear Before Washington Commission. TO HAVE UNIFORM RECEIPT Stronger Demand for Spot Hops Sends the Oregon Market High er -Produce Supplies Full in All Lines. A party of Portland grain men returned from Tacoma yesterday, where they attended a hearing of the Washington State Railroad Commission. The warehouse companies op erating in Washington had been invited to end representatives to the meeting, which wa called for the purpose of adopting a uniform country .warehouse receipt and fix ing handling and storage charges. There waa a full representation of all the leading companies. The question of a uniform warehouse receipt was first taken up and was fully dis cussed, the main points being agreed upon. In the matter of storage charges, most of the representatives were of the opinion that the present charge of 75 cents a ton was fully Justified. The representatives of the Pacific Coast Elevator Company and the - Puget Bound Were-house Company, however, Ptated that they thought the charge should be 60 cents a ton; though the representative of the Puget Sound Warehouse Company ad mitted that the charge was insufficient. The matter was thoroughly discussed and the Commissioners stated that they would ar rive at a decision at an early date. Th Portland grain men nresent at the hearing were R. Kennedy, of the Pacific Coast Elevator Company; Thomas Kerr and t N. A. Seach. of Kerr. GlfTord & Co ; A. Cohn. of the Northern Grain & Warehouse Com pany, and IX A. Pattullo, of Balfour Guthrie A Co. Forelim Grain Shipments. The local grain market was dull yester day, with prices unchanged. BUT NO ADVANCE MADE Departure of Many Financiers Re sponsible for the Decreased Activ ity French Bankers Load ed Vp With Steel. . NEW TORK, June 18. The contest be tween opposing forces in the stock market today was quite lively while it lasted, but it was over in the course of the first hour of trading. The forces supporting prices against further fall established control in that time, but having done so, seemed dis posed to discontinue operations. The list of successive departures from the financial district of persons of influence Is taken as partial explanation of the dimin ished activity. It is surmised that some of the heavy selling this week has been in preparation of such departures by closing up of outstanding speculative accounts in stocks. London markets, acordlng to reports, are indulging in conjectures over what is to become of the United States Steel stock ac cumulated by French bankers in prepara tion for the expected listing on the Paris Bourse, and the prediction is made that the reselling of that stock would Involve a re newal of shipments of gold from New York to Paris. Another reduction In the London price of copper and the reported renewal of the war on freight rates were unfavorable incidents of the day. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value, $3,207,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing High. Low. SHORTS SELLING FREELY Favorable Weather Conditions for Harvesting Are the Chief Bear ish Factor in the Chi cago Grain Pit. CHICAGO. June 18. The wheat market was heavy all day and. with the exception of the May option, all deliveries declined more than one cent from the high point. The distant deliveries displayed a show of firmness at the start, owing to light ship ments from Argentina during the week and to reports of damage there to wheat by drought, but weather conditions In the Win ter wheat belt at home were too favorable for harvest for the market to retain this firmness for any length of time. Prompted by the bright outlook for the new crop, shorts began to hammer the market shortly after the opening and continued to sell free ly the greater part of the day, causing a steady decline. Cash houses reported that offerings of new wheat in the country were Increasing dally and that the demand for cash grain was rather slack. Declines at the Northwestern grain centers had a weak ening Influence. During the day the July delivery sold between $1.131.13 and $1.15. Prices rallied a little from the bottom late in the day on covering by Bhorts. but the close was weak, with July at $1.14. The corn market was firm at the start, but the favorable outlook for the new crop resulted tn sharp declines in all deliveries. The market closed weak with prices off c to Q c, compared with the previous close. Oats displayed slight firmness at the opening, in sympathy with corn, but the market soon became weak. At the close prices were c to c lower than yester day's final figures. Provisions closed firm, with prices un changed to 15c higher, compared with the previous close.
