FAST TIME IS EXPECTED Over Mile-a-Minute Average Is Iooked For In 236 and 402 Mile Speed Tests to Be Held In Indiana. OROWX POIXT. Ind., June 17.-Great crowds began arriving tonight for the opening of the auto races over the Crown Point-Lowell circuit of 23.6 miles tomor row. Excursion trains from every direc tion brought thousands of people, as did long lines of motor cars. Tho First Illinois Regiment has arrived rrom t.hit-Hgo. in command of Colonel Joseph B. Sanborn. The khaki-clad guard ians of tho course carried their shelter tents ar.d blankets over their shoulders, mid bctore midnight there were many wh envied even this crude shelter. Tomorrow the militiamen will be detailed in squads along the entire ' course to keep It clear. Seventeen Cars to Compete. Practice this afternoon differed from that of preceding days save that the time was not of ofticial formality.' It was expected there would be 18 cars in the race hut the withdrawal of the Ford reduced the number 17. The race is for light, stock cars, which will contest for the Indiana trophy. The fourth side Is Irregular from Crown Point to Cedar I-ake about five milea. As the Indiana trophy race calls for 10 laps, the cars must travel 236 miles. This is But 61 miles less than the distance covered In the anderbilt race on Long Island last year. Long Race Saturday. The Cobe cup race on the Crown Point-I-owell route Saturday, the big event of the meet. Is 17 laps, or 402 miles, which is 105 miles longer than the Long Island route. It will furnlshe one of the severest tests of automobile stability In the his tory of motor-car racing. In fact, it has been stated by many drivers that the pilot w ho best saves his car will win both races. The course Is in good condition. Better than a mile a minute has been made in practice, and although there were some revere bumps, these were no more numer ous than is to be expected In a race of the present length. Fast Practice Time. A few of the drivers, too eager to await the official afternoon practice, sped around the course this morning Robert son. In his locomobile, took another trial at the -S" curve, beating all previous records. He dodged several truck wagons and yet made the lap. according to an ordi nary watch, in 2.1:10. Several watchers gave Lyttle, in an Apperson, credit for -I minutes. THUGS MAKE ODD MISTAKE Heat Vp Teputy Sheriffs Son foi Law and Order League Sleuth. MONTGOMERY. Ala.. June 17.-A sec ond attempt was made late last night to do bodily harm to detectives of the Law and Order League, who have gathered evidence against dealers in soft drinks. The detectives arrived in the city last night from Nashville, where thev were rushed after being attacked here last week. Last night a son of Deputy Sheriff Harry McCord. who resembles one of the detectives, ws called away from the lall and severely beaten before the thugs real ized their mistake.
