PILOT HOUSE IS SMASHED I-owrr Ieck of Bridge Was Blocked by a Train Captain Caples, or Steamer, falls to Take Notice. Blame Falls on Pilot. While the lower deck of the Steel bridge wa blocked with a train and it impossible to swing- the draw, the towing; steamer Ottawa, owned by the Oregon Round Lumber Company and In command of Captain Al. Caples. crashed Into the east side of the draw yester Tay afternoon and was bacilv damasred. The accident occurred at 6:35 o'clock, and from the statements of eve-witnesses. Captain Caples was to "blame. The damage will amount to several hundred dollars. Captain Caples refused to make a statement last night. When questioned aa to the cause of the accident he re plied facetiously: "I tore the pilothouse ofT so I could get a new one." The Ottawa was bound down stream. She backed out from the Couch-street dock and whistled for the Bteel bridge draw. The upper deck was cleared on time, but a train blocked the lower deck, making It impossible for the en gineer to swing the draw. The pilot on the Ottawa, evidently expecting the draw to open, did not slacken speed. He rang the signal to stop when it was too late and the pilothouse and a large part of the wheel were carried awav. "The condition of the draw was plainly visible to the pilot of the Ot tawa." said Foreman iAird of the Steel bridge. "There were a number of wit nesses to the accident, and It was the e?pr"sed Pn," of several of them that the man at the wheel did not show sufficient caution. We have had several narrow escapes from accident wlththe Ottawa." DELATED BY HEAD AVIXDS Coasting: Steamers Held Back by Heavy Northwest Gales. Steam schooners, northbound from Cali fornia ports, which reached Portland yes terday and Sunday evening, report having experienced heavy weather all "the way tip the Coast. Strong northwest winds ''re encountered and the craft, most of which were light, had considerable diffi culty In making anything like good time. Northwest winds are In evidence .a lit tle earlier this season than usual. During the Summer months the winds blow almost continuously from the northwest and northbound steamers are usually a little behind schedule. The steamship Rose City, which reached Portland last night from San Francisco, required 47 hours to make the run north to the Columbia River. On the north passage during the period of northwest winds coasting vessels gen erally hug In close to the shore In order to escape the blow. There .to an Inshore channel nearly the entire distance be tween the Go Men Gate and the Columbia River. The channel runs well Inside of St. George's reef and northwest of Beal Rock. It was in attempting to follow this Inside channel that the steamship Queen Christina was wrecked in 1307. Striking Longshoremen Smoke. HOQUIAM. Wash.. May 17. (Special.)
