Tha acceptance of th M-WOOO Portland ri.le bonds and S2&0.flno water bonds by O'Connor Kahler of New York waa tha announcement mado last nijrht by City" i rtanurer Werlein. The acceptance of the bonds terminates a trying delay and offers a solution to the Madison-street brtdee dilemma. Later, however, owing: to the fact that a defe-t was discovered in the 2S0,'Xi0 bonds the deal was delayed. These bonds in the documents covering the tasue were referred to as 30-vear bonds vhil in h. I summary they were designated as 25- year bonds. Yesterday Mr. Werlein vis- ln united States .National Bank and made formal tender of the bonds, and advised that the city authorities had furnished all the documents and ordi nances referring to bond issues and that the bond-buyers' attorneys had had time in Wlilcli to ! nmn tlx. ..1UI.., ., lssusj in question. (A gratifying feature In connection with the sale is the fact that the United States National Bank is making arrange I )io.nt;j with the Chase National Bank of New York, which has been selected to J have the handling of the bonds, by which when the payment on the coupons i becomes due the purchasers will present ;-f I heir coupons to the Chase National Hank In New York. The- Eastern b'ank ' I does this for the local bank, returning l1ho coupons and bonds as they mature Mto the local bank, which in turn presents -' them to the City Treasurer s office and l receives the money. Thi arrangement ; nas materially increased the value of the i bonds. By reason of this the city Is eaved a considerable sum in Interest and ...t. irniisiminy or snipping the bonds to New York. The procedure Is regard 1 as most favorable to the cltv and is a source of satisfaction to the city author Hies as showing the standing of Port land's securities in the New York mar ket. j The termination of the delay does away 1 with the uncertainty with regard to the J fate of the Madison-street bridge. Now that the funds are available for a new . structure. It is probable that immediate f steps wilt he taken in that direction. At any rate City Attorney Kavanaugh will confer with members of the Executive ! Board at a meeting this afternoon to t consider the proper course to pursue in , relation to the MadLson-street bridge con- Mructlon.
