THE MORNING OREGONIAN, MOXDAT, MARCH 29, 1909 ' . . I . CHURCH SEES ft GREAT REVIVAL Dr. Cudlipp Says Advance Is Most Remarkable in History. AGE ONE OF ACHIEVEMENT Speaker Predicts Evangelization of Whole World Within Present Generation and Tells of En thusiasm of Movement. "I am convinced that the church of God is today witnessing the greatest revival it has known since its inception." This was the etatrment mad by Dr. John H. Cud lipp In his sermon at the Grace Methodist Church, yesterday morning. He was preaching upon "A World Kingdom. ' For his text he had chosen the commission of Christ to his apostles, found In Matthew xxviit:19. "Go ye, therefore, and make disciples of all nations." He said, in part; If vision and daring are to be counted, we are living In the most stupendous daya this world nai ever known. Prodigious tasks are being; undertaken with the confi dence of an already realized victory. In deed, 1 was about to say that man has be come recklessly fearless. I modify. Not so much that, perhaps, as that he is now claiming his heritage as the son of God. But if a new day has dawned for the ma terial, or lower kingdom, it is certain that a new day has dawned tor the spiritual, or higher kingdom. You will observe that there is scarcely a -department of the church that has not been rejuvenated, and made to feel a responsibility in doing its share for the salvation or men. And here, let it be understood that I mean the salvation of the whole man, body. mind. soul. What does It mean that our country Is so markedly astir, investigating the business methods of men? What does It mean that so many of the men who lead us in politics are turning aside here and there to preach a reform, a moral and a spiritual gospel, not the least of whom Is our noble ex Presldent Roosevelt? what does It mean that the rich are becoming uneasy in their luxury, and are hastening to endow colleges, strengthen hospitals and give libraries and sanitary quarters to the poor? What does It mean that there is on foot, at this moment, a splendid movement to eave our children from the factory, and to an education that will help them see the goodness of a God who made this -world for all. and not for a few only? What does It mean that our prisons are being made factories for the making; of mea. rather than places of retention for punishment? Vhat does It mean that the laymen of all the evangelical churches are banding them selves together to evangelize this world In this generation, to Instruct the world in the gospel of Jesus Christ, In the next 33 years ? X do not know what you think, but. as I see it. nothing has surpassed this since his tory began its march through the centuries. I confess that when It was first whispered that the oliureh would undertake to evan gelise the entire world in one generation. I said: "It Is the nonsense of a dreamer- it cannot be done." Little did I think that," so soon, the news of a laymen's missionary movement in America would startle the hrlstlan church in every land . with Its motto. "This world tor Christ In this gen eration. If the world is to be won. the Methodist Church must raise $150,000,000 and send B4.1 now missionaries Into the field each Z-VTJl!!r '.h? J1631 ,m yers. The Methodist J hurch will be obliged to multiply Its offer .V." t2'nl,,lon y eight. It will cost less than ISO lor each new member added to the church. Dr. Cudlipp preached last night on "The Superlative Mastery." He said it Is not the woman who can give the most ex quisite whtet party who is the greatest benefactor to a town, but the woman who looks into the eyes of the sick. NORMAL COURSE STRONGER Willamette Raises .Standard of Training Work for Teachers. SALEM, Or., March 28. (Special.) President Homan. of Willamette Uni versity, announces that the untversitv, beginning; with the Autumn term. 1909, will raise the standard for graduation from the normal department, requiring; a six years- course after the completion of eighth-grade work, whereas at the pres ent time only four years is required. This win (five a normal course jnueh better than that now offered by the State Normal Schools, where only a four-year course is given. Discussing: the proposed change, which will be announced in a bulletin to be Issued the first of the week. President Homan said: "During: the past year It has been part of the plan to institute a first-class nor mal course in Willamette University for the coming year. Graduates have been turned out of the normal course of this lnntltutlon in the past, but the time has come, when the grade of normal work in the State of Oregon should oe raised to a much higher standard. It is necessary to do this in order to put Oregon on a par with other states that are doing first class normal work. "The work of the university hereafter in the normal course will be equivalent to completion of the sophomore year in college. When teachers are turned out in accordance with this high standard, school boards feel that th"y are indeed getting teachers worthythe name, and with such strong mental development as will practically guarantee their success. Willamette University Is determined to le noted for the. thoroughness of its work. "A good faculty already carries on this splendid work for the institution, and as the work of the normal course en larges and increases, as it undoubtedly will, such additions will be made lo the faculty as will be necessary for thorough and successful work in developing teach ers in the normal course of study." "COLONELS" LOSE TITLES Executive's Aides Will No Ixmger Wear Gaudy Vnifornis. OLTMPIA. Wash.. March 38. (Spe cial.) Conference Also Condemns Coffee and Tea as Injurious Final Business Is Transacted. The Western Oregon conference of the Seventh ray Adventists concluded Its work yesterday at the Bast Portland church, holding two sessions. At the .morning session. President C. "W. Flala presiding, the committee on recommenda tions submitted a strong resolution - de nouncing the use of patent medicines on the ground that they all contain alcohol and are dangerous to health. The reso lutions also included tea and coffee among the articles to be avoided. The resolu tions had been fully discussed last Thurs day and were adopted unanimously. Another matter passed on was the movement "of the Southern Oregon mem bership to form a conference separate from the Western Oregon, conference. The recommendation was that the West ern Oregon Conference favor the organi zation of a conference in Southern Ore gon whenever the members in that por tion of the state are sure that they can assume the expense and responsibility of the new division. T. H. Starbuck turned the sentiment of conference in favor of this recommendation by stat ing that such action was In line with church progress. . A recommendation was adopted that the field missionary secretaries prepare to give special instructions at camp meetings along the line of the testi mony of the church for promotion of social purity. It was also voted to hold a general field day during the coming year, when the 1000 copies of "Christ's Object Lessons" will be disposed of and the money used to improve the church schools. On that day every member will become a book agent The conference mmmlit Ised to make changes in the East Port land property by which the conference office may be transferred. The prop erty is on East Everett and East Eleventh streets. , It was moved that $430 of the old mis sionary conference society funds be used in paying oft debts on tents, and that $648 of the balance be transferred to the new conference missionary society. The conference committee was authorized to provide a temporary tabernacle in Port land for public meetings. The next important Seventh Day Adven tist gathering will be the general con ference, which meets in Washington, D. C. May 13, and will continue until July This gathering will lncmde all the con ferences of the world. All the confer ences of the Pacific Coast will be rep resented, and for the Northwest about 15 delegates will attend. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. ?..9RTMJ'I2' March 28.
