THE MORNING OEEGOMAy, SATURDAY, MARCH G, 1909 T G AND DATES FOR MAYOR'S J00 Convention or No-Convention Contest Promises to Be Lively One. INDEPENDENTS LAY PLANS Leaders Are Already Working- on ItaUs of Big "Pow-wow" April 9 and Available Timber Being Sorted Out Prom "Culls." Convention or no convention, there will to an abundance of candidates for the Republican nomination for Mayor In the approaching municipal election. The problem aa to who will be the Repub lican nominee Is generally believed to be no nearer solved than It was before last "Wednesday night's mass meeting of the majority party. It may safely be pre dicted that, regardless of whom the pros pective convention may suggest as the "most available" candidates, others will tro Into the race as Independents. While there exists a general disposition on the part of Republicans to line up and present a solid front to the common enemy, the plan of action apparently Is lacking. There Is a feeling among manv Republicans that the movement for a. convention is actuated by selfish polit ical Interests, and for that reason they will sit quietly by and await develop ments. If the results of the conven tion are not -up to expectations, others may be expected to get into the con test. City Convention in April. Details already are being arranged for the city convention that is to be held Saturday, April 9. Next Wednesday night at the Selllng-Hlrsch building the members of the Republican City Central Committee will gather and fix the date when meetings will be held in the vari ous precincts of the city for the pur pose of electing three delegates each to the city nominating convention. It Is proposed that these precinct meetings shall be properly advertised and that all Republicans shall attend and have a voice In selecting the delegates to the convention. At this meeting it also will be decided how many candidates shall be suggested for each of the offices to be nominated. S. C. Pier, president of the Tjnlon Republican Club, is expected tarty next week to announce the ap pointment of a committee of nine that shall recommend to the city convention tne names of the most desirable Repub lican candidates for the various munici pal offices. Mr. Pier, it was learned yesterday, will not consent to bo a candidate for Mayor at this time. He has taken the posi tion that. hvlnr Y,t... , ... ,. 7 " " o. meiiiuer or tne committee submitting the convention plan, it would be Impolitic for him per sonally to seek the nomination at the f,ihe convent'"n- To do so he feels would smack too much of machine methods, and for that reason would not whi k harmony with the purposes for which the convention was recommended. fr?o,, Sam! reason Dr. A. c. For that reason he probably will Kht shy of thl convention and go directly before the people for their indorsement. DIOr tna Stand Pat on Statement. The same probably will be true of Councilman A. ti. They naturally are expected to absent themselves from attendance at wi?w,?VenUon an4 tako thelr chances with the people. Rn!?e M.ultSmah County lawmaker, haS lonVA- Bail6y- has for Eom e nti 2? For the reasons recited U ta expected that these four candidates should they go into the contest will waii and see who the convention may suggest and then measure their cloth to fit the situation and enter the contest as inde pendent candidates. .Iritis Have Good Chance. With the Statement strength so divided the convention forces would ask for nothing better. "With such a division the backers of the convention feel that their candidate certainly would win out. and it would then remain for the voters to se lect aa between a Republican and a Dem ocrat for Mayor. It Is an easier matter, under the com plicated situation, to guess who may ap pear as independent candidates, than It Is to foretell the probable candidates that will be recommended or' suggested by the April convention. However with the retirement of S. C. Pier, it may he expected reasonably certain that F. E. r- . also a member of the Union Re publican Club, will be the choice of that organization, which initiated the move ment for t.ie coming convention. It is a certainty that the name of Mr. . Beach will be one of those to receive the favor able consideration of the convention. Among others whose names probably will be presented at the convention are L. O. Clarke. C. W. Hodson; County Clerk F. S. Fields. The friends of Charles E. Mo Dowell are urging him to become a can didate, but his name will probably not be submitted to the proposed conven tion. City Attorney Kavanaugh and City Au ditor Barbur, who are serving their first term, probably will be renominated and elected, whether by convention or other wise. Opposition to City Treasurer Wer leln has not developed and that official in all probability will succeed himself . Seneca Fouts aspires to the nomination for Municipal Judge.
