I DEFIES RAVAGES OF TIME 'JlABKTKOTTEK HALE AND HEARTY AT 87. Dr. J. M. Peebles Tells of His Ex tensive Wanderings in Many Lands and His Mode of Life. Dr. J. M. Peebles, preacher, a doctor of the. old school and a man who ha a served his country as a diplomat. Is In Portland and will visit here for several days. Dr. Peebles Is 87 years old and he is making his sixth tour of the world. The weight of time rests lijfhtly on his shoulders, but his spirit Is that of youth. He will deliver several lectures while in the city, and makes no secret of the cause that has made It possible for him to he hale and heRrty at 87. He has no special copyrurht on this method. He and enjoys his youthful old age and all because he says he has always lived close to nature. In his wanderings over the earth's surface. Dr. Peebles has met and been entertained by the foremost scholars of the world. He touched India on his first trip and the rail of that mysterious land, of castes and the occult has charmed and fascinated him. His heart is with the tax-burdened English possessions and he says It will not be long before India will forever shake off the English shackles. Dr. Peebles has made a study of the Hindu character; he has delved deeply Into the black, white and gray arts as practiced, not only by the fakers, but by the highly educated Hindus. He sees In the rapid advance of education among the higher castes of Hindus a speedy deliverance of India. In a brief talk with Dr. Peebles it is difficult to discover Just what he does believe in. It is a good deal easier to learn in what he does not believe. He sums up his beliefs by saying. "I believe in everything that 1b good." The venera ble traveler Is a vegetarian of the most, pronounced type, which he declares is re sponsible for his physical .strength. He has not eaten meat or gtfffasy food for so long now. that he has fcrgotten when he quit. It might have been 60 years ago. It might be even longer ago than that. His one regret now Is. that he did not start dieting when he was two years oiu. Then he says he would i.ave lived for 200 years instead of 110, the time he has allotted for himself. Dr. Peebles" diplomatic career started under President Grant. He was appoint ed United States Consul and stationed in Asiatic Turkey. The billet gave, him a taste for Qriental life and a chance for research that, even as old as he is, hs has never been ab e to satisfy. SPECIALS TODAY. At one-half regular values.
