Th condition of the New York apple market Is reported by the Frultmen's Guide of January as follows: "The Western apple at th auction sales thla week covered several oarloads. but ther were no high prices paid In any tuarter. Some Newtown ptpplni aold in th rang of 11.53 to S1.S0 per box. and a few lots of Spltzenberg brought up to per box. Th Inside figure on on cf th best carloads offered waa 11.70 per box. Th rang on th Far Western Baldwins was given as from SL40 to $1.80 per box. A few Ruaseta sold out at $1.40 per box. and Jonathans sold at $1.40 per box. Ther war a few lots of Greenings that sold In a small way up to $1-50 per box. and Ben Davis stock at (1.3.1 to $1 00 per box. "Ther Is a general opinion In the local trad that conditions as to the supply war rant a good deal firmer market later on. It W said that th confidential report Issued by th International Apple Shippers" Asso ciation baa had a good deal to do with th stiffening up of th Ideas of some of the, hclders on apples here and at the prin cipal points of supply. The stocks at said to be a good deal less than was Indicated as probabl In th December report." NEW METHOD OFPRESERVIXG EGOS. British Process) Adds to Value of Storage stock. Consul Joseph G. Stephens, of Plymouth, reports that a North of England firm of Importers has adopted the following new method of preserving esrgs. whereby It 1 claimed that eggs six months old are mad to retain their new-laid freshness: Acting on th theory that an egg decom poses owing to the entrant of bacteria through the shell, the egirs by the new pro cess of preservation are 'first disinfected and then Immersed in a vessel of hot paraffin wax in a vacuum. The air In the shell Is extracted by the vacuum, and atmospheric pressure Is then allowed to enter the ves sel, when the hot wax is pressed Into the pores of the shell, which thus hermetically seals It. Evaporation of the content uf th egg. which h a harmful effect. Is thereby prevented, and the egg la practically sterile. Th yolk of pickled egir and others t artificially preserved will frequently break on being poached. but the ejrfts i preserved by this novel process are i quite free from such fauit it i eialmed for this process that the eggs will bring 4Ss (Xll.o per 1440 more than those preserved In llm water or by water glass, and 32s (7 78) more than those kept in cold storage. Particulars of this new method might bo obtained from a man whe-se address Is forwarded (name filed at Bureau of Manufactures). f AUTORMA ASKS FOR FEED WHEAT. FINANCIAL WORLD UNEASY Stock Sp?cnIatlon Xot Active In New York Market In Spite of Advances In a Few Special Issues. Money Bates Lower. KWT TORK, Jan. IB. Desultory trading by profeiwlonal operators mad up a great part of th stock market today. Th pro fessional traders talked much of th size of th short Interest In th market and a belief In It unwieldy proportion had as much to do with th caution of th bear element and th Arm tendency as did any happenings of favorable purport to values. The rise In prices In a number of Individual stock was due to special causes and their strength had sum a oympalhetlo effect In sustaining other stocks A circumstantial report was curreat of th Intention to Incorporate th Wisconsin Cen tral into the Pacific group. The rtoe In th ffeaboard bituminous coal carriers was the effect of great Improvement la eamlnga dis closed by th Baltimore fc Ohio for th last half of th last calendar year, disclosed by vestorday's semi-annual report. Brooklyn Transit once again responded to a rumor that an initial dividend was to be declared on th stock. The movement of the general list was very languid and indifferent. The demand was not sufficiently aggressive to promise an ef fective upward movement. An advance in the price of print cloths was welcomed a possible Index of soma commercial lmprove- ment, but this waa rather more than offset by another recession In th price, of copper at the New York Metal Exchange. New Tork copper is said to ba accumulating. Th metal Industrials, In consequence, were rather heavy, including United State Steel, and did not ohar In th occasional upward move ment of prices. A feature of th day's money market was th reported lending- of a round amount for 30 days at 1 per cent, a rate considerably below the prevailing call loan rate and ar guing' the expectation, therefore, of lower money rates. Th estimates for th weeks' currency movement show that cash is con tinuing to flow to the New Tork bank in large amounts. Ther is an undercurrent of uneasiness in the financial world lest the Russian loan shall not put an end to th accumulation on the part of th Fronch bank. In that event. It will be concluded that some sinister motive exists that may Indicate a political upheaval in the near future. Bonds were firm. Total sales, par Talu, 34.242,000. NO SUPPORT IS GIVEN Isarge Shipments From Australia and Argentina Are the Canse of the Unloading CTose I Near lowest Point, CHICAOO, Jan. IS. Th liberal ship ments from Australia and Argentina In spired free selling of wheat, resulting In a weak market throughout the entire day. The exports for the week from Argentina were fully 500,000 bushel more than had been estimated yesterday, while the total movement from Australia was given as 1.&S0.0OO bushels. As this is the first heavy movement of wheat from either of these countries from the present season's crop, the effect on th market her was decidedly bearish. The fact also that the bull leaders gave the market very poor support contributed to the weakness. Prices nt the start were 14 to o below th previous close and before the end of the day further decline of nearly lc had been effected. The close was weak and only a trifle above the lowest point with May at 81.054 "311.05. and July, 964i96-)4o. Heavy sales by a leading long caused weak ness In the com market. Th doe was weak at the bottom, with May at 60S3c and July at 6H46114o. Tho weakness of wheat and corn waa chiefly responsible for moderate declines In the prices of oats. The market closed easy, liB-4c to o lower than yesterday's dose oa May. July closed at 46c.
