TRANSACTIONS FALL OFF Appearance of Uarriman in His Office Deprives the Bears of One of Their Weapon, Minor Issues Manipulated. NEW YORK, Jan. 12. Belling presaura continued in cvldenca In stock transactions today, but it was in spotty and f.trui way. E. H. Harriraan appeared at his office for the first time since before Christmas holi days and thereby put an ond to the occu pation of bearish operators who had been disseminating rumors of his serious Illness In efforts to depress prices.- With these rhanfees which had been aggravating the weakness in stocks, the bear element ' took on a share of caution and increased reserve In the way in which they pushed operations. The result was seen In the decrease In the activity of the market and the disposition to take stocks at concessions to cover shorts. The buying; was not aggressive and eld not pursue an advance in prices, as shown in the dwindling activity of the market on rallies and the subsequent relapse In prices at the lat. Minor stocks continued to rise with the repetition of rumors of favorable develop ments. The Wisconsin Central slocks espe cially were affected by reports of alleged negotiations for absorption by the Canadian Pacific. The total value of the mcnth's exports rose to the highest figure touched since the preceding January, which marked the culmination of the panic rush to market our products and realize the gold to relieve the financial stringency. A decline In the private discount rate in Paris gave some evidence of an effect from the large gold accumulation in the Bank of France, which Is expected to terminate with the lwue of the Russian loan on Jan uary .3. Discounts continued to advance In London, however, and the expectation is unchanged that the official discount rate or the Bank of England will be advanced on Thursday. Uonds were irregular. Total sales, par value, $5,032,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. " . CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. . Closing Amai copper .... 14.7H H Am Car & Foun. 1,500 48i 48 do preferred ... ...... :. A fight between potato-dealers was started again today n Western avenue, as a re sult of which three Seattle firms have placed orders in California for 100 tons of potatoes for Immediass shipment North. These dealers recently failed to boost the market and are now putting themselves on the bear side. Butter manufacturers are talking of higher butter, but sentiment' Is opposed to an advance unless one is necessary. An advance at Portland would probably force prices up here. The Initiative will not be taken here. . Eggs are weak, although the supply Is till limited. TWO-CENT SLUMP IN PRICE Selling Is General in the Chicago Pit, but Individual Transactions Are Not Ijarge Cash Wheat in Demand. CHICAGO, Jan. 12. The bull leaders who have formerly gives the wheat market good support on any material decline In prices held aloof today, leaving the bears In full control. Selling late In the day waa quite general, but individual transactions were not of great magnitude. Borne- excuse for selling was found in an official report which showed that the exports of wheat and flour from the United States In December were less than one-half of those of the corresponding time a year ago. A brisk demand .for cash wheat partially offset the bearish Influence. The greatest selling pressure was on the May delivery and the option declined nearly 2 cents from the high point of the day, the low point being reached at $1.0414- The market closed weak at almost the bottom, with May at $1.04H and .
