That too much bluestem was shipped out of the country In the early part of tho season Is now Tory plain to grain men and millers, and the result Is a scramble to get control of what Is left. The demand Is not conflned entirely to the Oregon and Washington mill ers, but there are orders for wheat on hand from California and from Mexico. It la re ported that a considerable quantity of wheat has been sold for shipment from this port to Mexico, but the particulars were not learned. Tha Inquiry la mostly for bluestem. but there Is aoms buying of other varieties on which prices nave also been advanced, though not so sharply aa on tha test mill lag wheat. With tha higher wheat prices. Portland flour quotations hava also been raised, pat ents going up 2S cents and exports 20 cents per barrel. The highest prlca quoted on East- J era eggs was 40 cetts- Tha supply of ranch eggs was very small, only a few firms having any to offer, while local stocks of Eastern eggs ara also decidedly small. The egg question Is becoming a serious ine and If the cold weather should last throughout tha week, the market will be entirely bare of eggs of every description with no chance of replenishing tho supply until the temperature rises. T.'lth butter, tho matter is not so serious. Supplies of the best grsds of city make are getting small end the creamery men nave been compelled to cut down deliveries. In some cases 54 per cent or more, but there Is still a considerable stock of second grada butter besides what Is In storage. Even should this supply get down to the danger point. Eastern butter could bo brrught from Seattla or from tho East. In view of these circumstances local prices have not yet been disturbed and the cream ery men will wait a few days to see what happens to tho weather tetora making any change. Cheese Is also getting scarce and soma urgent orders havs been placed, with the result that tha market la very firm but as yst no higher. Market conditions In Nsw Tork State are reported by the Watervlllo Times of Janu ary 8. as follows: Betwaen ooo and TOO bales of hops rhanaed hands here during holiday week, which is a most unusual occurrence and has lad many to conclude that there Is more of a demand for hops still li-ft In growers' hands than haa been supposed. The prin cipal sale that has taken place here the past few days Is that of the John J. Den nett lot. consisting of about 1-0 bias choice hops. The price Is not given out. but Is ki.own to be 13 cents or belter. In last Fridays New Tork Commercial Bulletin a statement was made that there were 13.0OO balea still In nrst hands In New York State. LATER MAKES RECOVERY i I f Depression Aggravated by Reports or Harrliuttn's 111 Health, Though Tlieso Are Au thoritatively Denied. NEW YORK, Jan. 11. The stock market underwent a further procesa of speculative deflation today. The severe break In the Erie securities had a special explanation In the beilef that 'the proposed $5,010,000 bond Issue which was the plan of financing the road's neceselstlee selected by Its directors, had failed to meet the neceestry approval of the Public Service commission. It was claimed that a substitute plan was already formulated which would supply the reeded resources and also meet with the consent of the Public Service Commission. This plan did not serve to avert the crash In quota tions cf the Eric shares and the unsettling effect of this crash on the whole of the gen eral list. The slump waa aggravated by the reitera tion of disquieting rumors of the condition of E. H. Harriman'a health, although these were authoritatively denied. Thqlfternoon rally In prices followed the evldilW of support for the Erles and the day' change are generally small. llonds were irregular. Total sale. par value, 6,302.000.
