NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER Boy and Girls Who Wish to Join The OrcRonlan's Theater Party Should Write Their Short Compositions Today. two (lavs remain for pupils of the public and Catholic schools who wish to enter The Ori Ronlan s "'Hen liur cnn- tiH to send in their essays. According to the terms the competition, all es says must be in the hands 'of The Ore- (ronlan by 1 o'clock mldniRht tomorrow nltrht. There Is still plenty of time however, for those who act promptly to compete for one of the 300 tickets to the theater party at the HelllK at the ooenlnK production of "Ben Hur.'' the nltrht of January IS. Many essavs have already been re reived by The OreRonlan but the number Is doubtless smaller than it would have been had not the cold weather caused the adjournment of the schools Thurs day and Friday. Arrangements had been made to allow pupils time to write their essays during school hours and many fcad planned to take advantage of this opportunity. Th fact that the number of essays will be somewhat smaller than It would have been had the schools remained In session only Im proves the chances of those who enter the competition. May Work at Desks Today. The schools will again take up their work today and those who wish to do so will undobtedly be given time to write their essays at their desks, as Superin tendent Rigler has requested teachers to devote one of the study periods to this purpose. Those who do not finish the essays at school may do so at their homes out of school hours. Several have telephoned to The Oregonian. ask lug If the essays must be written at home, and It should be clearly under stood that this Is not necessary. Pupils may write them wherever they wish. All have undoubtedly read the con dltlons of tho contest, but It will do no harm to repeat them so that they will be kept clearly In mind. The contest Is open to all boys and girls of the high schools nd the eighth and. ninth grade gram mar schools, and to pupils of correspond ing grades of the Catholic schools. Contest Is Highly Indorsed. The essays should be written on one side of the paper only, and In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, the writer should put his name, address, grade and school. Mail your essays to the "Ben Hur Editor. The Oregonian, Portland. Or." The contest has received the highest indorsement of the Board of Kducatlon. of Superintendent Kigler and of Father Kdwaid V. O'Hara. of the Catholic schools. Superintendent Rlgler and Father O'Hara have appointed two com mittees of Judges snd as soon as the contest closes, the essays will be turned over to these committees. When the Judges have completed their work, names of the 3flu winners will bo published in The Oregonian. Every pupil who Is eligible should enter the contest. If he has not yet written his essay, he should do so tixlay. He Is sure to receive benefit from the story of "Ben'Hur" and also from writ ing his composition. Besides this every one who enters has a good chance to be Included in The Oregonlan's theater party, which will be the biggest ever given In Portland and is sure to he very enjoyable. The 3"0 winners will have the best $2 seats on the main floor of the Helllg Theater and it is safe to say that the audience will be one of the brightest and most appreciative that has ever witnessed a theatricnl production. Hesldes the 3o0 winners of the contest, the 44 members of he two committees of Judges will also be guests of The Ore gonian at this time. Amusements What the Pn Areata Bay.
