Write Uiem, , GAS STOCK BREAKS Drop of 26 Points Caused by Supreme Court Decision. ENTIRE LIST AFFECTED Iiessenins Activity ricportfd in Var ious Industrial Unes Money Markets Ease Off Bonds Are Irregular. NEW YORK. Jan. 4. A very heavy specu lation miscarried by the loss of the Con solidated Gas suit to overthrow the New York state law limiting the charge allowed to be made for Illuminating gas In New York City to 80 cents per 1O0O cublo feet. How exces sive has been the speculation based on an expected contrary decision would require a review of the course of the stock for many months past to decide. Whenever the Supreme Court was In session It has been the regular thing, aa Monday approached, to run up the price of Consolidated Gas on the assumption that the court waa now about to band down Its decision in favor of the company. The abrupt announcement that the company had lost lt suit threw "the hoi lers of the etock Into a panic and caused an almost perpen dicular drop of 264 points by Intervals, as much as & points at a time. So violent a movement in a single stock could not be expected to leave the general market unaffected by sympathy. The approach of frenzy, however. In some of the selling that accompanied the slump In the gas stock must be attributed to a state of uncertainty over the general position into which the stock ntarket was coming. Of deep significance was the news. Ue at tended to on the floor of the Stock Exchange, of the lessening activity In various industrial lines and In railroad traffic The number of Idle cars In the country, which have been Increasing for several weeks. Is now back to a figure not touched since early In Sep tember. Railroad traffic managers admit a continuance of this tendency up to the cur rent returns of traffic There waa a reasonable easing off of the money markevs. following the yearly eettie ments, except at Berlin, with which discount rates hardened. The enormous changes In the various items of the bank statement of the Imperial Bank of Germany revealed how great was the drain ' of the annual settle ments at that point. Ponds were Irrejrular.
