BUYS -IN PORTLAND Malor Gould, of Indiana, Charmed With City. CHOOSES EAST SIDE LOTS Purchase Representing $30,000 the Result of Conversation With Traveling Companion, Who Praise Portland.' David 8. Stearns yesterday cloaed a deal for the west half of lota 6 and 6 of Mock M. beinsr a property on East Morri son between East Third and Union ave nue. The piece. 60x100 feet, has a build ing of two stories, rented for three years to the Donnelly Hardware Company and the Forbes Auction Company and to a lodging-house of 22 rooms on the second etory. The leases return a revenue of satis factory percentage on the purchase price of $30 000. The former owners were J. i. Daly and J. Frledenthal and the In vestor Is Major W. P. Gould, of Vln cennea, Ind. Major Gould haa recently made a tour of the Coast, from Southern California to as far north as Alaska, and selected ' Portland as the most promising place In which to buy Income-bearing property. He Is an old-time acquaintance of Judge Williams, having formed that acquaint ance when Mr. Williams was Attorney General of the United States. On. his return from Alaska, about two weeks ago. he met a Portland man who ex plained what Portland had accomplished and what It future promised. The Major had a relative in the person of H. D. Ramsdeil, of Lipman. Wolfe & Co.. of this city, and decided to visit Port land as a matter of social pleasure and to keep his eye open for a business op portunity. In conversation with his traveling companion from the North, he made . inquiry concerning who would be a good man to consult about Portland investments and Mr. Stearns name was mentioned. After the selection of the East Side location was brought up to him, he asked Mr. Ramsdell's opinion and was Informed that the property was all that It was represented to be. Major Gould, who is now a guest at Alexandra Court, is so favorably im pressed with Portland that he has de cided to make this city his future home after returning to Indiana and closing up his affairs In that part of the country. Mrs. Gould is no less favorably Impressed with Portland. EXECUTE 99 - YEAR LEASE Tenants to Pay $1000 a Month for second-Street Corner. M. K. Freeman, associated with two others' whose names are not given, has secured a lease of the lot and building at the northeast corner of Second and Alder streets, diagonally across from the new Gerlinger building. Just completed. Major Freeman was the contractor of the- East Side High School anI has been a well-known builder in this city for the past 30 years. He and associates leased the corner under a 99-year term at a rate of 11000 a month.. The corner now Is im proved with a 2-story building, leased to present tenants up to May 1 of next year, but upon the i xptratlon of, these leases. It Is the announced Intention of the new owners to either add another story or tear down the present structure and put up a three to six-story store and office building next year. Mrs. Byron Z. Holmea made the lease to Major Free man. QUEER HABITS OF BEASTS Menagerie ManagerJTells Peculiari ties of "Sleeping Animals. "When a monkey sleeps he picks ui the highest perch he can find." said keeper Conklin. of the Barnum & Bailey menagerie. "When the only home of the monkey was a forest-he lived always in deadly fear of the lion, and a live monkey, is the choicest kind of a meal for the king of beasts. Al though the monkey Is a rather wise boy, and knows that in a soo the Hons are securely caged, the fear of the lion is born In him, and this accounts for hl finding as high, a perch as be can , to sleep on. "The lioness, when free from family cares, is prone to He on Its back, with Its legs stretched up straight in the air and paws pendant. The lion, when the excitement of the day is gone, stretches itself out flatly on its side, with paws turned In and twitches and throbs during Its slumber a good deal like a dog. Gorillas and chimpanzees sleep with their hands over their beads. Bears, which have no fear, sleep in any position. The same Is true of wolves. Animals of a cunning or cowardly nature, however, are always on the alert, even when asleep. A seal sleeps like a human being. It stretches out at full length and enters dreamland on its back, stomach or side. Once in a while a seal will sit up with its head bent down on its chest, , fast asleep in the water, with his ears under, so, as Is his custom In his native state, that he may hear the approach of an enemy, sound traveling with great distinctness under water. ' "Elephants sleep upright like a horse svnd fitfully. They are keenly alert to the slightest noise, and quick to sens' things. If they can see the object they do not rattle easily, but if it is some? thing weird-sounding and out of sight, they need the reassuring voice ot their keeper. With the elephant the voice Is. everything. They have the same feeling for a friendly,',; sincere voice that a natural musician has . for the sound of a musical voice." The menagprle department of the Barnum & Bailey greatest show on earth, which exhibits here next Tues day and Wednesday, has been, it is said, greatly added to during the past Winter. Xlght Scavengers of Paris. Marie Van Vorst in Harper's. Rolling cabs grow rare, and about 8 o'clock A. M the' long-deferred repose claims the. greater part of Paris. Then It ts that those for whom the night be comes a workshop appear in the street. There are celebrated figures amongst these owls. There is the ramasseur da tabac, the limp, ragged tramp whose trade is proclaimed as he suddenly dashes to a drain or a gutter and lifts from the pavement the butt of a cigarette or a cigar. His quests lead him to haunt the fronts of the cafes at night he may slink where he will; he Is a workman, and the police respect his labor. Other figures ragged as he, bowed as he, glide and slip from the dark corners where the gens d'armes rout them out. They slink through the open squares like dark birds of endless passage blown across the Ughted city In search of port; port of such as these are the night refuges or the river-bed restless couch, never too full to put to bed one more. These vagrants rouse themselves from the park benches where the Summer night would gladly mantle them If the police were not too zealous. There are still friendless and homeless in France in spite of the excellent care of the gov ernment. In Bellville. the Whitechapel of Paris, there are faces that suggest the miseries of the famous Faubourg St.- Antoine in the days before the Bastile fell, but under the Paris lights these are the only shadows.
