THE MORNING OREGOXIAX. SATURDAY, JULY li; 1908. II BE SOON If! SERVICE Recommendation of Colonel S. W. Roessler Will Probably Be Accepted. IDLE FOR THREE YEARS Craft Was First Brought to Mouth of Columbia in 1003 Worked for One Tear Formerly the Grant. News About Waterfront. Shipping men, seafaring men and every body interested in the welfare of Port land as a shipping center, ere enthusiastic over the second recommendation to Colo nel Roessler, United States Engineers, for the placing in commission of the dredge Chinook. Prom semiofficial sources It has been learned that the dredge will be placed in commission as soon as the report of Colonel Roessler has been re ceived and accepted. The Chinook was formerly the United States transport Grant. She 'was built in Irelund in 1892 and for a time operated as a packet under the British flag. When the Spanish-American War broke out she was taken over by the Government and named Grant. Early in the year 1903 she was converted into a seagoing dredge at Mare Island, California. She sailed for the Columbia in November of that year and for the next 12 months did good work in the deepening of the channel. She was commanded by Captain Dunbar; and Cap tain Speier. now harbormaster of Port land, was first officer. In January, 1906, she was sent to San Francisco for repairs. She returned to the river in April and tied up at rhe Government moorings. Since that time she has never turned a wheel. It has Been suggested by competent marine authorities that the upper works of the Chinook be stripped off and the bulwarks cut down so that the main deck is flush. This would increase the capacity of the craft and lighten her by several hundred tons. FIXLAAD FIXED FOR GRAIN Russian Ship Will Take Wheat From Columbia River. Upon being Informed of the nomination of Mr. Bryan for President this morning. Judge George Gray immediately sent the following telegram: "Hon. William J. Bryan, Lincoln, Neb. Accept my hearty congraulations. "GEORGE GRAY." Judge Gray declined to make any comment upon the action of the con vention, but It was evident that It was no personal disappointment to him. While the Judge had been advocated for the Presidential nomination by his friends hero and elsewhere for the past six months, he had no part in this work and all that was done in his behalf was without his sanction. There is no doubt, however, that If the convention had nominated him for the Presidency, he would not have declined the honor. In an interview with Judge Gray it was learned that while repeated ef forts have been made to Induce him to accept the nomination for the Vioe Presldency, these efforts nave been un availing. He said that he had not changed bis mind In regard to the matter and that he would under no cir cumstances accept the nomination, even should It be tendered him by ac clamation. When Judge Gray was shown the dispatch from Denver concerning his letter to the Delaware delegation re garding the Vice-Presidential nomina tion, he said: "I wrote a letter July 1. addressed to Jo8iah Marvel, as follows: " 'Under no conceivable circumstances would I accept the nomination for the Vice-Presidency. Please made this un derstood by all members of our dele gation and especially by Mr. Handy, who can voice it if needs be in the Con vention.' "I now repeat with added emphasis. If possible, what I then said." KERN IS PLEASING TO BRYAN Running-Mates Personal Friends for Many Years. FATRVTFW. T.IwriT.V vtk t..i.. ia When he received the news of the nomination of J. W.
