THE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1903. 13 TUFT IS NAMED (Continued. From Page 9.) that carried the crowd with him, and no njan who spoke today received more attention than he. When Interrupted by the galleries, lie replied in the same manner as he said on, the first occasion: "It's about all Wisconsin will get here; can't you give me a few min utes?" When a man standing near the ros trum urged him to "name him," Mr. Cochems replied: "That's all right, four dollars a week." "You're a four-flusher!" retorted the man on the floor, who was at once threatened with a violent exit if he did not put a period to his public conversa tion. "In 1904 ' said Mr. Cochems, and the crowd groaned loudly at the his torical allusion, believing that It meant a considerable further extension of his speech. "Name him, name him!" shouted the crowd. "I know you are tired men," replied the speaker, "but I am, too. Don't think this is fun for me. It is not. It is the performance of a sacred duty. One minute more and I will be through." "Back to Wisconsin!" called out a delegate in the third row. Mr. Cochems weathered several more etorms of protests from the crowd be fore he reached the name of his candi date, the effectiveness of which was all but lost In a hissing 'of voices, the re sult of his battle with the taunting throngs. As Mr. Cochems left the stand, he was congratulated by Mr. Hanly, Sen ators Beveridge and Hemenway and others In the first row. The nomination of Mr. La Follette was seconded by C. A. McGee, of Wis consin. A wild cheer greeted Mr. McGee as he closed, and the demonstration that followed exceeded in Intensity that which had greeted the presentation of any other name except Mr. Taft's. UPROAR FOR ROOSEVELT Picture of Presiflcnt Again Sets the Galleries Wild. The cheering rapidly increased when a man named Selfert, who is a messenger in the United States Senate, held up a picture of President Roosevelt, The up roar was so great at the time the picture was shown that it was impossible to tell exactly where the La Follette enthusiasm ended and the Roosevelt cheers began. The Wisconsin men took full charge of the outburst, however, and led It with vigor and increasing every minute as the time went on. Sergeant-at-Arms Stone directed one of his assistants to go to Mr. Seifert and order him to take down the picture of Mr. Roosevelt. It was promptly done, but the cheering went on undiminished. The tumult was so great that no human voice, nor the lusty strokes of the chair man's gavel, was able to penetrate It and bring order out of the vocal chaos. The excitement was entirely in the gal leries, the delegates, with the exception of Wisconsin, remaining quietly in their seats, waiting for the tornado to pass. The cheering developed definitely into a Roosevelt demonstration, and, encour aged by its continuance, the man on the stage lifted again the lithograph of the President, which had previously been low ered at the command of the sergeant-at-arms. Then on the balcony there appeared n immense American flag bearing a pic ture of the President. Two men marched across the balcony platform in the rear of the stage and the cheeerinst was taken up anew, min gled with cries of "Four, four, four years more." Mr. Lodge, abondoning all efforts to still the crowd, ordered Secretary Malloy to continue the call of the delegations. This was done amidst a terrific uproar. BALLOT NOMINATES TAFT Votes Cast Amid Terrific Uproar for Roosevelt. The chairman then announced In a tone which, although strained to the ut most, could be heard only a few feet away: "That completes the roll of states, and the rollcall will now be had for the vote. We will not wait a minute longer." The Ecene was absolutely unique In American political history, the vote being taken during a terrific uproar In behalf of a man whose name was not before the convention. , "Alabama," shouted the reading clerk. There was a roar of yells and hisses from the crowd. The chairman of the dele gation, however, made his way to the edge of the platform and shouted: "Alabama casts her 22 votes for Taft." The vote was repeated by the clerk and there were cheers from the delegates, sent to mingle with the tumult of the gallery crowd. Hisses, cheers and cat calls continued to come from the gal leries as the States of Arkansas, Cali fornia, Colorado and Connecticut cast their solid votes for Taft. Uproar Almost Drowns Vote. "Pay no attention to the crowd," said Mr. Lodge, directing the clerk to pro ceed. "I shall not have the President nominated by a Chicago mob," he shout ed in anger. As the rollcall proceeded, the chairmen of the various delegations, unable to make their voices heard, continued to come up to the platform and yell the votes of their states In the ears of the secretary. Georgia split up her votes, casting eight for Foraker and 17 for Taft. Cannon failed to hold his own state firmly, three votes being cast for Taft. By the time Kentucky was reached on the roll, the crowd had quieted down at last, but cheers greeted the announce ments for Taft. Solid votes for Taft came from Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota. Mississippi, Missouri and other states, but New Jer sey split her votes among four candi dates. 35 for Taft, three for Cannon! two for Fairbanks and four for Knox. Kew York Splits Her Vote. New York caused a long break in the roll call by demanding that the names of the delegates be called and that they be allowed to vote Individ ually. One of the delegates delivered himself of a speech, saying that, while he was under Instruction for Hughes, he personally favored Taft. Other delegates voted for Taft, while Ben jamin B. Odell, Jr., voted for Cannon, another delegate following his lead a second later. William F. Barnes voted for Taft, as did Lucius N. Littauer,: Representative Payne voted with the Hughes delegates. The total vote was divided as follows: Hughes, 61; Taft, 10; Cannon, 6: absent, 1. North Carolina went solidly for Taft, as did North Dakota. t Ohio Makes It Majority. Ohio cast 42 for Taft and 4 for Fora ker. This was the critical point in the balloting and it was his own state that carried the Ohio candidate over to vie tory. A resounding cheer from the gal leries greeted the announcement. Mr. Lodge ordered the gralleries cleared, but the demonstration was short-lived. There had been 469 votes for Taft when Ohio was reached and the nom ination was made. The 42 votes of Ohio gave Taft 511, whereas only 491 were required. South Carolina demanded that her vote be taken by delegates. The vote was, Taft, 13; Foraker, 2; Fairbanks, 2; absent, 1. South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Vermont were for Taft. West Virginia, which was subpesed to be the breeding place of the Roose velt boom, went for Taft, while La Follette lo'st a vote In Wisconsin, it being cast for Taft. The territories went solidly for Taft, and the final re sult was: Taft, 702; Cannon, 58; Knox, 68; La Follette. 25; Hughes, 67; Fairbanks, 40; Foraker, 16; Roosevelt, 3; absent, 1. Too Tired to Cheer Again. A considerable delay was occasioned by some confusion among the account ants, who kept the tally of the ballot, and it was 5:15 before Mr. Lodge read out the vote as given above. A roar greeted the announcement of the Taft vote, which was given last, but the wearied delegates and spectators were not able to make a sustained effort and the enthusiasm spent itself. Representative Boutell. of Illinois, who nominated Cannon, was one of the first of the delegates to mount a chair and call: "Hurrah for Taft." The band played the "Star-Spangled 'Banner," and many in the crowd joined In sing ing the National anthem. After this the demonstration ceased. A big crayon portrait of Taft was brought to the stage and prominently placed. Make It Unanimous. General Woodford, of New York, was recognized ana said: "Mr. Chairman, on the request of Governor Hughes and of the united New York delegation, I move the nom ination of William H. Taft be made unanimous." Senator Penrose, of Pennsylvania, and Mr. Boutell, of Illinois, both clam ored for recognition. Mr. Penrose was given the first chance and he moved to make the nomination unanimous. Mr. Boutell seconded the motion and In diana, with others, followed suit. The motion was put by the chairman and carried with a "shout. "I declare the vote to be unanimous," said the chairman and the last cheer was given In response. It was on motion of Senator Fulton that the convention took a recess at 5:22 P. M. until tomorrow at 10 o'clock. Tips Cut Off, Dockmen Strike. CHERBOURG, June 18. The girls who answer your call on the telephone must be quick, accurate and courteous. They must have good memories also. Those who work nights often get in the way of eating almost anything handy, which is apt to be the kind of food which does not rebuild waste brain and nerve colls. "I have been night telephone oper ator for a number of years," writes a Calif, girl, "and was formerly in per fect health, never knew an all. "But irregular hours of sleep and meals, and the use of pastry or any food that happened to be available, soon caused my health and memory to fail. "The loss of my robust health wor ried me very much. And medicine seemed to do no good. "Four months ago mother told me It was the condition of my stomach that caused my trouble, and she be lieved If I would change to Grape-Nuts food, I would improve. "Eager to regain my Health, I took her advice and instead of eating just anything, I ate Grape-Nuts regularly, and at the end of four months on Grape-Nuts I am the happy, robust girl I once was. Just think of the absurdity of this prin ciple! And yet, the truth ie the majority follows this course. DO YOU WANT TO DO THE SAME B SHOULD THINK NOT. Tf you do, you will aek again, How did he do it?" The far-seeing man will watch the mar ket and general conauions and grow hops when prices are low. What is true of hops Is true in almost every other line of business stocks, min ing and last, but not least, real estate. AGAIN WE SAT: DO YOUR OWN THINKING! Do you want to buy when everything is booming, when prices are high? That's when most people buy. and make nothing. NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY, while prices are reasonable. After the Presidential election, when the big boom Is sure to come, you will have your har vest, with prices way up. Call at our office.
