Portland's public baths have been sup ported by popular subscription since they were built. A number of efforts have been made to have thorn taken under the municipal wing, but without success. The recent action of the Council 4n ordering the removal of the boats from the foot of East Taylor streets to the West Side Is considered the first step toward city own ership of the baths. Complaint has been made that the loca tion of the baths was not In the most favorable place. The overflow from the laundry on Water street was sufficient to foul the water. The location to which the floats have been assigned Is consid ered one of the best on the water front. It Is at the foot of Market street on the West Side and neither sewer nor laundry will have any effect on the water. Harbormaster Speler will superintend the moving! of the hath houses. He has secured tugs from the Pacific 'Bridge & Construction Company and the ' change will be made this morning. LEYLAXD BROTHERS FIXED Dlprncagcd Vessel Ijeaves Tp From Astoria Harbor. The British ship Iieyland Brothers, which arrived In the river March from Valparaiso, left up for Portland yester day morning !n tow of the Harvest Queen. The Iieyland Brothers has been on the disengaged list since her arrival In the Columbia and the announcement of her departure for Portland is taken as evi dence of the fact that she has been char tered for outward loading. A number of sailing craft are in the river awaiting charters to transport Brain or lumber to foreign ports. Some of thein arrived prior to the advent of the Leyland Brothers, but It Is possible that a better rate was arranged with the owners of the leyland Brothers, and on that account that vessel received the preference. The Leyland Brothers will take old-crop grain and will proceed direct from Port land to Queenstown or Falmouth for or ders. She is an association craft and 27 shillings and 6 pence is the minimum rate quoted. Marine Xotea. The steamship Breakwater, from Coos Bae ports, arrived up yesterday after noon at S o'clock, with passengers and general cargo. The steamship Senator, from San Fran cisco, is due to arrive In Astoria this afternoon. The steamship Arabia, of the Portland A Asiatic Steamship Company, left down yesterday at noon. A strong effort Is being made to in duce the Mount Hood Railway & Power Company to build Its line into Portland south of Mount Tabor along or near the Section Line road. It is announced that not only will the farmers give the right-of-way. but a S10.000 bonus as well, as an inducement to the company to build on that route. A. E. Niblin and J. M. Buckley have been working to secure the free right-of-way. and some others Interested are raising the $10,000 sub sidy. The South Mount Tabor route would bring the line near the Kelly Butte quarry, where the county gets out crushed rook for road construction. She 60 Years We thoroughly beliece in our remedies. AYER CO., Manufacturing Chemists, Lowell, Miss. County Judge s.nd Commissioners have been anxious to get a spur built to the quarry so the output could be handled by electrlo car. and It Is considered probable that the company might get reasonable concessions as far as the county roads are concerned in order to secure this electric railway. However, farmers north of the Base Line, where the original route was laid out, are taking alarm at the enterprise of the Section Line farmers in offering right-of-way and a bonus, and are mak ing concessions a to prices for right-of-way. In one instance, a farmer who wanted 8000 for the right-of-way through his farm of 60 acres, has dropped down to 11200. O. P. Potts, of Montavilla, who has studied the situation and examined the work in progress near Gresham, said that no one can tell what route the com GRAIN TONNAGE EN ROUTE AND LISTED FOR PORTLAND COMPLETE TO APRIL 26 Km.
