BELLINGHAM, Wash., Nov. 21. Mayor A. L. Black, defeated candidate for renomlnatlon by the Republican party at Tuesday's primary election, to day finds that he Is the Democratic can didate and cannot, under a ruling by Attorney-General Atkinson, withdraw. His name will go on the official ballot as the candidate of the minority party. There were no candidates for the Dem ocratic nomination, but according to the state primary election law. a blank space was left on the ballot and electors are permitted to write in the name of any candidate they choose. About a dozen Democrats, scattered throughout the var ious wards, wrote Black's name on the Ballot, and he Is now the defeated Repub lican candidate, but the successful Dem ocratic candidate. Uets Conditional License. ELMA, Wash.. Nov. 21. (Special.) The City Council had a lively tilt last iht over the saloon license of C. C. Crisp, which the Council refused to grant unless Crisp would sign an agreement that George Crisp, brother of the appli cant, would not be permitted to tend bar. Crisp signed the agreement and the license was issued. rf Luther Durban Trcfren. ASHLAND, Or., Nov. 21. (Special.) Luther Durban Trefren, a resident of Ashland for 15 years, died here. Tuesday, at the ripe old age of 90 years, 3 months and 11 days. He was born near the state line, between Maine and New Hamp shire, and grew to manhood in the town of Milton, N. M., where he was married, in 1845, to Louisa A. Rlcker, who sur vives him at the age of 85 years. He was a carpenter by trade In his early life, but in 1874 he became a local preacher in Central Nebraska and for many years labored faithfully in evangelistic work, going to outlying points to preach the gospel. He affiliated with the Methodist Church In early life. Besides his widow, two sons and one daughter survive him, Mrs. Rev. J. 3. Smith and George W. Trefren, of ABhland. and Luther 8. Trefren, of Butte Falls, Or. Metrger & Co., Jewelers and opticians, 342 Washington st. Hasan shoes sold at Rosenthal's. DUKE SEEKS NO MONEY Waives Dower to Obtain Shonts' Consent to Marriage. NEW YORK, Nov. 21. According to friends of the Shonts family In this city, President Theodore P. Shonts of the Inter Borough Metropolitan Railroad, was per suaded to allow his daughter, Theodora, to become engaged to the Due de Chaul nes by members of the family and by the Due himself. The Due finally suc ceeded it appears, in convincing Mrs. Shonts that he was r.ot a fortune hunter. It seems that when Mr. Shonts first heard of his daughter's attachment for the Due, he declared emphatically that he would have no foreigners in the family. Nor did Miss Theodora receiv- muc. sup port at first from her mother and sister. But Mr. Shonts determined to treat the Due fairly, and accordingly he entertained him at the Shonts home in Washington. There the Due continued to press his suit with Miss Theodora and he won over all of. the family except Mr. Shonts. Then the persistent Frenchman tried to influence Mr. Shonts, but did not meet with much success, until Mr. Shonts real ized that he- was eatU'eU' aloaa in his ex position. Previous to giving his consent, however, Mr. Shonts Insisted that the Due must show good faith by waiving any question of a dower. This, it Is said, the Due readily did, which proved to Mr. Shonts that his affair with Miss Theodora was really a love match. The Due sailed for France today, but he ex pects to return here about Christmas. Blown to- Atoms With Powder. PINOLE, Cal., Nov. 21. Joseph Kelley and Frank Norton were killed- and a building blown to atoms today In an ex plosion of 500 pounds of gelatine at the Dupont Powder Company's plant near this, place. The cause of the explosion Is unknown. The damage wil amount to $5000. Tug-of-War Tournament. At a meeting last night It was de cided to give a tug-of-war tournamnt, beginning: next Monday. Eight nations will be represented. A. M. Plancke is tug-of-war manager. Nov. 21 A re vival of the rumors that the Japanese Government, as an evidence of its con fidence In the intention of America, has signified Its Intention of extending a formal invitation to the American battle ship fleet to visit Japan as an incident to the approaching cruise, develops the fact that there have been no formal ex changes between the two governments on this subject so far as known at this time at the Japanese Embassy, or the Navy Department. It is Intimated, however, that If the Japanese Government learns that it Is the intention of the Navy De partment to have Admiral Evans' fleet return to the Atlantic from its Pacific cruise by way of Asia and the Med iterranean, an Invitation will be forth coming to have the ships pass a fortnight In Japanese ports, where the personnel will be hospitably received. Fraud in Indian Land Sales. OKLAHOMA CITY, Nov. 21. The Senate committee, Investigating the charges of fraud in the sale of Klckapoo Indian lands, completed its examination of witnesses at Shawnee last evening. Much fraud is reported .o have been unearthed, which will prevent Congress from removing the restrictions from the lands belonging to Five C1vli,zed Tribes.
