i THE MORNING OREGONIAN. SATURDAY. NOVE3IBER 2, 1907. BL LILIAN TINGLE- MAN'Y a housekeeper road with a sigh of relief the reports of a pos sible Immediate fall in the price of meat, butter and eggs; but hope must be our friend a little longer, for eggs con tinue to be luxuries, costing from 35 to 50 cents per dozen: retail beef prices are still unchanged, and the various dealers I questioned expressed a belief that they will remain so. Best creamery butter, however, is reduced this week, costing 75 cents a roll Instead of 80 cents, the reduc tion being a direct consequence of the strained financial situation. Otherwise the manager of one leading creamery as sured me we should probably have seen "dollar butter" before the year was out. One Is tempted to say something about "III winds." I remember that just three years ago. about this season, I happened to be in a place (not Portland, however) where housekeepers were mournfully in dignant because butter had actually risen to 15 cents per pound! So far it looks as if the Thanksgiving turkey would be difficult of attainment for the housekeeper of limited means, 25 and 30 cents per pound being the present price. Chickens are still 20 cents, and ducks and geese 25 cents per pound. Wild geese and Belgian hares both cost $1 each. In the ftsli market flounder and herring are to be had for 10 cents per pound. Smelt, catfish, salmon, black cod. halibut and croppies are all 12',i cents per pound; perch and shrimp. 15 cents; striped bass, 25 cents, and black bass. 30 cents. I saw no sturgeon this week and very few lob sters. C"ras cost 15 and 25 cents, accord ing to size, and frogs' legs, 40 cents per dozen. There are some small new grape fruit coming In which look like unripe oranges BUILDING FOR LAST MONTH October Statement of Inspector Spencer Shows 4 22 Permits. Building Inspector Spencer yesterday completed his report of the permits Issued in his office for October. The detailed statement is as follows: Kind. No. Amount. He said that several large buildings are known to be in the initial stage, that Is t say. plans are being prepared; but so far as his office is concerned, these Im provements cannot be recognized until the plans are submitted. Among those in mind were the Failing Block, at Yamhill and Fifth, the Meier & Frank annex at Alder and Sixth, the Fenton at Seventh and Ankeny, the alterations on the Per kins Hotel, the McGinn at Seventh ,and "Washington, and the Pennoyer and Flt tock blocks, which will open the next building season, without taking into con sideration the large number of dwellings certain to be started, at a figure of valuations much In excess of this year's record. Saturday Is Our Chicken Day La Grande Creamery 264 YAMHILL STREET. and cost only 5 cents each. Larger ones come two, three or four for 25 cents. Fine oranges are still $1 per dozen. As for apples, you can pay any price you choose, from Northern Spys at $1.50 per box up to choice Banana apples at 12 cents each, or $8.50 per box. I saw some good "Spltzen'bergs" at $4 per box, and "Kings" at $2. For some reason cranberries vary in price this week from 124 to 20 cents per quart. Huckleberries are still with us, though not as good as they were, at 10 cents. There were very fine strawberries at 25 cents per box; large red pomegran ates, two for 25 cents: cantaloupes, three for 25 cents; fresh pineapples, 25 to 60 cents each; Japanese persimmons, 5 cents each, and prickly pears, three for 10 cents. Concord grapes cost 25 cents per basket; other kinds, 50 and 65 cents. I noticed a large sack of nice, fresh co coanuts. Makers of cocoanut cakes, big and little (I mean the cakes, not the mak ers), do not seem to realize the charms of the fresh nut for their confections. Of course it is more troublesome to prepare and use than is- the convenient but rather dry and flavorless "dessicated" kind, but it Is worth while for a change. There Is plenty of both hothouse and head lettuce, chicory, water cress and cucumbers for the wise lovers of green salads. Brussels sprouts, wax beans and green ( beans are all 15 cents per pound, while good peas are to be had for 10 cents. Celery costs 5 and 10 cente per head; celerlao and kohl rabi 5 cents per head. Eggplant costs 12 cents per' pound: tomatoes. 10 cents; and okra 20 cents. Carrots, beets and cabbage all cost about 3 cents per pound; squash and potatoes, 2 cents; sweet potatoes, on ions and parsnips, 5 cents. Mushrooms are good, but are again up to 50 cents per pound.
