THE -MORNTNU" OKEGONIAN. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1907. 11 BRESHAM FI IS OPENEDTO PUBLIC Large Crowds Inspect Many . Creditable Exhibits of Mult nomah County Products. CITY EXTENDS WELCOME Tomorrow Set Aside as Portland Day, When It Is Expected That the Record Attendance Will Be Reached. GRESHAM, Or., Oct 16. (Special.) Attendance at the Greeham Fair and Carnival totlay was good, consider ing It was the opening day and that many details were not complete. The grounds were alive and bustling at an early hour- Installation of delayed ex hibits occupied the forenoon, so that the opening exercises had to be poet poned till afternoon, when the crown ing of the Carnival Queen took place, followed by the formal welcoming of the public by President Johnson, Mayor Short, W. W. Cotton and W. C. Haw ley, i N Queen Lucy the First was ' appro priately crowned by Frank Mottor, of Portland, Lord Chancellor. Miss Jda Jones and Miss Florence Stafford were her attendant maids, and the retinue of pages was gorgeous In gold and silver trappings. Following the opening exercises came the baby show. Fifty-seven babies were entered, all under three years of age. The displays in all lines are credita ble. Among the fruit exhibits are apples of finest quality. A mammoth pumpkin, weighing 87 pounds, la an other exhibit. The displays are es pecially fine, considering the fact that it has been only two months since the Gresham Fair was first discussed. Next year will see wonderful exhibits In all llnea, the culture of products being stimulated by the present fair. On "The Furrow" the attractions are many and varied, and the evenings are made merry under a myriad of elec tric lights. It Is announced that Carlisle Day and Miss Mamie Fisher, of Woodlawn, will be married on the grandstand net Saturday night as a part of the car nival programme. Tomorrows programme will begin . at 1:30 P. M. The features will be as follows: "The Grange," Mrs. Mary S. Howard, state secretary, and Austin T. Buxton, state master; "Women's Clubs," Mrs. Sarah A. Evans, president Federated Women's Clubs; "Fraternal Societies," Dr. J. B. Olmstead; Mac cabee drill team. Friday will be "Portland flay, ' and It Is expected that there will be -a record attendance from that city to see the wonderful resources exhibited by Multnomah. That the;- will be sur prised by the extent of the exhibits Is a foregone conclusion. NO FEAR DFRETREKGKMENT ATTEMPT TO DISCREDIT ROOSE VELT, SAY RAILROADERS. Business in Oregon So Great That Roads Cannot Afford to Intro duce the Policy Here. The cry of retrenchment that has swept over the country, starting with the heads of the railroad systems of the United States, Is not taken very seriously by railway employes them selves, who apparently do not fear that their salaries will be reduced on ao count of it. "It's all aimed at Roosevelt," de clared a railroad man yesterday. "If you want to hurt a man's feelings, hit him in the pocketbook. Then he is going to And out why he was hit and if it appears that the Roosevelt pol icy of holding big corporations strict ly to account is the cause for the re trenchment policy, the man who was hit Is going to do all he can to call a halt on the Roosevelt regime. He will have plenty of opportunity to do this next year at election time. "Many corporations In the East are cutting down their fixed charges In every possible way, chiefly by the 'dis charge of employe and general re trenchment. At the same time the hue and cry is raised that the attacks on corporations are the cause for the cut ting down of expenses and the em ployes are given to understand that Roosevelt's rigid investigation of the big Interests and holding them strictly to account is the reason for their dis missal. "This is a shrewdly calculated move to discredit the President and It Is ex pected by the corporations that this plan will defeat his policies at the coming election, no matter whether , Roosevelt or a candidate who proposes to carry out his Ideas regarding cor porations is nominated. "To my mind this is what .the re trenchment talk, means. It Is not made In good faith, but is planned as a bold stroke against the President. That it will have its effect and that the re sults will be serious, there can be no doubt. The Interests are being hurt and they cannot stand the agitation without serious losses. That they will stop at nothing in the effort to dis credit the administration is certain." The retrenchment policy has not yet reached the Oregon railroads. There is a general denial here that there will be any change In the administra tion of affairs. Business is excellent, the railroads have all the tonnage they can handle and every employe of the lines in this state Is urgently needed. Not only that, but the rail roads here are experiencing their greatest difficulty in getting enough experienced men for their operative and traffic departments. MEDICAL SOCIETY MEETS Treatment of Tuberculosis Principal Matter Under Discussion. More than 100 members of the City and County Medical Society of Portland at tended the regular meeting of the society at the Portland Commercial Club Rooms last night. Dr. F. M. Pottlnger, of Los Angeles, a specialist on tuberculosis, -read a paper of great Interest, entitled "Upon What Does the Cure of Tuberculosis De pend?" Dr. Pottlnger recommended the use of tuberculin as advocated by its discoverer. Dr. Koch, of Germany, and the application of common sense in treat ing the disease, a majority of the cases of which can be treated successfully either In the home or at local sanitariums. The paper was discussed by Dr-. J. Allen Gilbert, Dr. N. W. Jones, Dr. R. C. Yen ney. Dr. Andrew C. Smith, Dr. Florence Manion. Dr. K. A. J. Mackenzie, Dr. C. O. Walls, Dr. R. C. Coffey and Dr. Ralph Matson. Resolutions were adopted censuring the service of the two telephone companies and reciting the fact that the existence of two such companies in this city oper ates at a double expense to the physicians and surgeons. The same resolutions called for the appointment of "a com mittee of three with Instructions to visit the managements of the two companies for the purpose of demanding special rates for these subscribers and securing the best service possible. Dr. Harry F. McKay. Dr., Andrew C. .Smith and Dr. Robert C. Tenney were appointed on the committee. . which will submit Its report at the next meeting of the society. I I DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT.
