Calmer Counsels Prevail at Meeting of Dissatisfied Men and Parley Will Be Held. There may not be a strike by the Freighthandlers" ' Union ' as haa been threatened. Rather than act with inde cision, the counsel of the more conserv ative members of the organization pre vailed at a meeting yesterday afternoon and final action was deferred. Another meeting of the union will be held June 9, and in the meantime the members of the union will seek to gain from the trans portation companies the very best terms that can be obtained, including, of course, an advance in the existing wage schedule. Yesterday's meeting was held at Drew Hall and was largely attended by the Interested members of the union. Ten days ago the Freighthandlers presented a demand to the railroad companies ask ing an advance In wages amounting to about 20 per cent. A reply was requested by May 22. This was received, but the Interests of whom the demand was made declined to grant the advance. The Freighthandlers trin decided to hold a conference with the officials of the rail road companies, but this meeting was not arranged. An effort will now be made to hold a conference to determine if an amicable adjustment of the situation can not be reached. The Freighthandlers have one of the strongest individual unions among organ ized labor of the city, and virtually handle all out-going and in-coming freight. Should a strike be decided on, this union claims to be able to stop the movement of all freight entirely, and thereby force a settlement of their claims for better wages.
