BIG CONTRACT FOR R ST AN SCIENCE ) T Portland Healer Will Under take to Reform Drunken Vagabond. FIRST ATTEMPT FAILURE Bat Disciple of Mrs. Eddy Gets Police Court's Permission to Make One More Effort With C. E. Young. Christian Science has been Invoked to cure C. EL Young; of a dislocated shoul der, drunkenness and of an Innate aver sion to useful work. In event local Scientists fall in this mission. Young: must servo six months in the county Jail Upon the effectiveness of Mrs. Eddy' creed in this Instance depends Young a hope of free&om, for he was convicted of being a drunken vagrant. In the Mu nicipal Court yesterday forenoon. It was only the Interest taken by local Christian Science healers In his case and their confidence of being able to recon struct Young's moral nature that raved him from being sent to jail at once. "Wide interest is being awakened In the unusual case, for Christian Science is put forward in an entirely new light when its adherents take a derelict from the hands of the police and essay to convert him Into a useful and honorable citizen. The results of the experiment will be watched with closest interest. "If you succeed in making a man of this fellow there is plenty of other ma terial hereabouts for you to work upon." Judge Cameron said to Miss Carolyn Shanahan, a well-known Christian Silence worker, who appeared in Young's behalf. "If they will take a serious interest in our work I am sure we can make men of them," replied Mies Shanahan con fidently. Young's case is an unusual one m many respects. He is 36 years old, well educated and a grandson of Brlgham Young, one of the founders of the Mor mon Church, and incidentally of one of the largest families in history. Reared in the Mormon faith Young turned to Christian Science to help him when he is tottering on the edge of the gutter. He went to Miss Shanahan for treat men after dislocating his shoulder re cently. It was then discovered that his moral nature required treatment quite as badly as did his shoulder for he admitted his great fondness for drink and Idle ness. The case was considered by local Sci ence healers and it was agreed that a cure might readily be effected with Young's co-operation, which he promised to give. To them his state was the re sult of wrongful conceptions of truth. His ailments were fancied, not real. Nothing possesses reality or existence except the Divine mind. Eternal truth is changing the universe, according to Christian Science. Surely it could change tsrignam loung s derelict grandson. Young was at once placed under a course of divine metaphysics. This was several days ago, but with worldly practices"" so strong fastened upon him It was not at all strange that loung snould wan der Into Blazler a and proceed to re cruit a Jag. Eternal truths, metaphysics. faith and spiritual understanding were put aside for the wild, ' impulsive, un controllable creed of the flowing bowl. Young was again the purely physical man, which Mrs. Eddy describes as a corporation of evil beliefs, passions and appetites, fear, de praved will, pride, envy, deceit, hatred. revenge, sin, sickness and disease. He had tasted of the amber substances that drove away the Dr. Jekyll of his nature and left Mr. Hyde in control. For many hours he kept up his in sobriety, incidentally established a repu tation with the police for drunkenness and idleness. The awakening . came in Jail. Fortunately for Young. Christian Science did not despair of saving him from his unreal self. Miss Shanahan appeared in court personally yesterday forenoon and asked for his release, saying a term in jail would serve no good purpose. She was confident of her ability to effect the transmutation whereby he will ba no longer the .purely physical man but the Christian Science ideal of humankind wisdom, purity, spiritual understanding, spiritual power, love, health and holiness. Young showed very plainly the effects For Fresher, Better Meats, Buy at SMITH'S. FRANK 1. SMITH MEAT CO. 226-228 Alder Street, Between First and Second Streets. His face was unshaven and dirty, his eyes and lips were swollen with dis sipation and one shoulder hung awry, giving him an aspect of utter ahiftless ness. "Stand up there and be a man. Hold your shoulders erect," said Judge Cameron. "I can't my right shoulder is out Of Joint," said Young. "Haven't you had it set?" "No, that 13 not necessary." "Do you expect Christian Science to repair a dislocated joint?" "It wjll do so, I am sure." "Well, It doesn't appear to have done you any good as yet and you had better do something for that." suggested Deputy City Attorney Fitzgerald. "It is nothing. Matter is unreal" Young commenced weakly, but apparently he became tired or timid in the midst of his explanation, for he. did not complete the statement. "You are attempting a big task when you set about reforming a man who has fallen so far," suggested Judge Cameron, addressing Miss Shanahan. "Generally persons of this class reform of their own accord or they do not mend their ways at all." "He seems so anxious to do better I do not look for any difficulty," replied Miss Shanahan. "If you succeed be sure to let me know," added the court. "I would like to have Christian Sci ence applied to some of our worst cases If it Is successful. Now there Is Jim Hill. Most every religious organiza tion in town has tried to reform Hill. He repents most abjectly, prays at the top of his voice and comes back drunk inside of a week." "I'd advise you to see that be is kept away from liquor," said Prosecutor Fitzgerald. "If he gets around where he can drink again it will be a battle be tween whisky and Christian Science in which I am inclined to think whisky will win out." "Just to aid this experiment along, I promise you that if you appear again in this court you will get six months," Judge Cameron concluded, addressing Young.
