TL'E MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, MAKCH 5, 1UI. 11 PITFALLS FOR GIRLS Mrs. Baldwin Flays So-Called Massage Parlors. SNARES.SET BY PROCURERS Superintendent . of Travelers' Aid Sounds Warning; Concerning Es tablishments Which Police Are to Exterminate. Mrs. Lola G. Baldwin, superintendent of the Travelers' Aid department of the Toung Women's Christian Association, declares that many of the establishments masquerading under the sruise of mas sage, establishments in Portland are nothing more or less than recruiting stations for disorderly houses, their busi ness being to secure young women to lead lives of shame. One woman, who until recently conducted such a place, admitted that she had y this means filled a disorderly bouse with girts, and it is said that the business is flourishing to an alarming degree. The police are planning action against all places where evidence sufficient to warrant arrests ran be secured. In the Municipal Court yesterday morn ing, the cases against a woman, two men nd two girls, taken in a raid on a so called massage parlor at 4.T0 Washington Btreet Sunday night, were continued until tomorrow morning. Deputy City Attorney Fitzgerald will prosecute most vigorously in each instance, he declares, as the situation is bo alarming drastic measures seem necessary to close these deadfalls and thus save numerous young and un sophisticated girls, who fall prey to carefully-laid devices to entrap them. Establishments running under the guise of massage parlors, but which are de clared by Mrs. Baldwin ttf be deadfalls of the worst type, line the downtown streets. Not all of them, it is said, are bad. but the large majority of them, she states, are conducted for the sole pur pose of recruiting young girls for dis orderly houses in other portions of the city. "I am not conducting any special cam paign against massage parlors." said Mrs. Baldwin yesterday, '-but I am reporting all. such places that I find to the police, so that they will he able to act. I am well acquainted with the place where the police made the raid Sunday. It Is one of the worst in the city. It was an ex cellent thing to make the arrests. It was simply a place where girls have been lured to their ruin and placed in dis orderly houses, by means of skillful de vices and artful persuasion." Mrs. Baldwin recently called upon the proprietress of a so-called massage parlor in the downtown district, and had a heart-to-heart talk with her. The wo man finally admitted that the establish ment w "run as a side-line" to a dis orderly house, located in another portion of, the city. Mrs. Baldwin asked if the woman possessed a city license to con duct a massage parlor, and the woman said she did not. Mrs. Baldwin then in formed the woman of the liability of ar rest, but the woman replied: "Well. T have filled my house with girls now. and I don't care what happens." The place was soon closed. Mrs. Balwin points to this case as illustrating the total de pravity of some women who . run such places, and as showing that tjlie situation is indeed alarming. Mrs. Baldwin, as superintendent of the Travelers' Aid. comes into contact with many young women and others who have knowledge of establishments where girls are being sought for immoral purposes, and it has tieen her custom in each case to investigate and report to the Chief of Police all the facts as she has found them. Saloons and Ministers. PORTLAND. Or., Feb. 21. (To the Editor.) What is religion and what sre the churches built for? I have considered tile churches a place for worship and prayer, where we should hear good and not evil, where the min ister should instruct his congregation to be kind, loving and affectionate to each other, and above all to be sure and to try to make a preparation for eternity. It has always been the rule in former years for the minister to take his text from the best men in the Bible or New Testament, and preach from that book. Now I see they take their text from "The Biggest Fool in Portland." I believe in the church and in tree religion, but find it tiresome to hear the ministers continuously abus ing others, thereby showing their envy and hatred, which is principally on the saloon men of Portland, which seems to me to be for the purpose of starving and downing them.
