Some have even gone so far as to cry that there has been a huge graft on the part of the officials in charge of the money of the city. In his financial statement Recorder Thorndyke says that he has gone over the condition of the city In a thorough manner so that the people can see where the Income has been expended. He says: "There were old warrants legally issued to the amount of $4122 drawing interest, and it waa desired that these be paid. Of this sum J2731 has been paid, leaving $1390 unpaid. This debt was left un provided for by the former administra tion." Recorder Thorndyke drew, warrants to the amount of 3653 for unpaid salaries when he entered his office. Warrants to the amount of S1311.68 were Issued as judgments against the city. Then there was a warrant of Jlol7.50 first payment on the site of the City Hall. These war rants with many smaller ones absorbed much of the revenues of the city. The Recorder makes the following summary of expenditures: Old debt paid. J2731.44: interest. S1: old salaries, $653: City Hall site, J1517; water company. UTS: taxes. $28.36: poor, $139.60; fire bell, $182.30; hose and sundries, $415.65; Hayes street injunction. $2.m: disinfect ants. $31.24; street repairs. $167.52; chairs. $25.75; file and docket. $105.15: election expenses, $.:6.35; printing. $479.27; W. W. I. McKENNA, Agent Goodrich, $135.25; minor bills, $133: salaries for this year. $2920. Total of $10,242.78. The recorder closes his statement with the following: "Here then is the answer to the query, 'What has become of the $400tf license money V With $10,242.78 accounted for the taxpayer can readily note that there has not been a very wholesale looting of the treasury, even if the 'watch dog' of the finances had never given a growl."
