BY ARTHUR A. GREENE. PR,E3TJiBR.ICnC "W. MU1jKE, United &tx.tes Senatoielect. -with the legis lative applause still Tinging in his tars and the new joy of political trl- umph fgteatmlnjr In 1Ib ye. came down from Salem yecterday to meAe hurried preparations for his departure today for Washington to take a seat in the greatest parliament on earth. He had but a few hmirfl before been chosen for a seat in the L'nlted States Senate, the action of the legislature being, however, merely va t fifflrtAri or t n win or in rkvin a expressed nt the taIlot-4xxen last Bummer. ithouKb, ilia term will ie only six veeks in duration, the new Senator rifThrtfuIly considers that threat honor has come to him. At the Arlington Club last niglit Sena tor. 'Mulkey held an Informal reception. It wa none of his planning-, but spon taneously his friends luid neig-hbors soug-ht the opportunity to hold hands with him and congratulate him. The new Senator for the short term talces his seat with due ajppredatlon of the Importance of the trust, and his duty to the constituency which elected him. Although he will wear the toga only a few weeks, he Is certain to attract at tention at the capital. If for no other reason than Uiat & la on 1 the first two tnited States Senators ever chosen toy direct vote of the people. He already enjoys a wide acquaintance among- mem bers of the Senate, and has made a care ful Study of the methods of that body. o he will not le - exactly a cat In a stranse garret, as are roost Senators dur ing the flrst days of their terms. "My first concern," gaJd the Senator last nlg-ht. "will ibe the bills now pending- for the Improvement - of Oresron's waterway, r -shall use all my efforts to further such legislation and shall center my Interest In that direction. The time Is so -brief that I do not expect to Intro duce any measures of my wn. saye pos sibly some private bills, pension matters and the like. s "I am opposed to a ship subsidy, but sphall Rive the President my enthuslaAtio support, oeilevlng- that in doing; so I will represent the people of Oregon. In every way I shall advance th Interests of the state to the toest of my ability during; the time allotted me. "I shRll have a valuable assistant In Barry Bulkley, my private secretary, who Is well acquainted with Oregon and the state's needs. Mr. 'Bulkley Is familiar with departmental work, and knows the ropes thoroughly. I shall- ieave Thurs day morning; at 9:30, and expect to be in -Washington Monday.' Senator .M uikey declined to say what attitude he. will assume In the matter of the confirmation of United Stales Dis trict Attorney Bristol, hut it Is believed that 'he Is friendly to that official and that he may be relied upon to take the Bristol side of the case as against Sen- a tor Pulton. The. now Sena-tor seems determined to make h1 brief term as busy and erreotrwe one. Ha Js not ffatlefled merely to $o down in the history of the state as a Senator of six weekt. Tf I mistake not, be has political ambitions beyond the present, and since he is atlll young he can afford to work hard and hide his time until a full Senatorial term is at the dis posal of the people. My advice to the politicians would he to keep a -weather eye on Frederick W. Mulkey. He Is like ly to be a big factor In the future reck oning; which they will do well to con sider. Meanwhile, his course during- the few weeks of his term will be closely watched by the people who have chosen Mm. Although fickle, the great American voter Is Inclined, after- all, to make men rulers over many things who have been faithful in a tew. , FRANK L.
