Two men were fatally wounded, over 500 shots were 11 red In a race riot and great ex citement prevailed at "Wiggins, Miss., late yesterday William Smith, a negro, in resisting ar rest, shot and fatally wounded Deputy Mitchell. Smith escaped, but was cap tured and placed in Jail. Late last night a mob dynamited the structure, lired sev eral volleys Into his ceil and left the negro for dead. While the mob was storming the jail a crowd of negroes began firing at the be siegers. Over 500 shots were exchanged and D. Melarke, a white man, was fa tally Injured. Several negroes are sup posed to have been shot. This morning Smith was found to be alive in the Jail, but his arms had to be amputated. t'hcwahwah Railroad Incorporated. OLYMPIA. Wash.. Nov. 5. (Special.) The Chewahwah Valley Railroad Com pany, of Seattle, capital $1.000.0uO, filed articles here today. Its object is to build a railroad from Nason siding on the Oreat Northern to Red Mountain, in all Si) miles, all in Chelan County. The in corporators are H. F. Albers, of New York; W. R. Woodard, of Leavenworth, Wash., and T. E. Ellis and John S. Jury, of Seattle. Conductors Slashed by Highwaymen. PORTLAND, Me.. Nov. 5. A desperate fight took place in the center of the city at midnight between four highwaymen and three street railway conductors. Two of the conductors were fatally slashed with razors.
