THE 3IORXIXG OREGOXIAX, TUESDAY, OCTOBER, 30, 1906. 14 HAZEL DOLLAR F1RSTT0 CLEAR Her Loading Is Completed by Union Men Breaks Tie-Up of Port. CARRIES WHEAT CARGO New Mill at Hongkong Will Start This Month Waterfront Is Act ive and All Vessels Are Being Loaded. The first grain vessel cleared yesterday since the - recent grainhandlers strike which had caused practically a month's Inactivity on the water frnnt. The vessel was the Hazel Dollar, destination Hong kong. All of the union men employed previous to the strike -were back at their old posi tions and harmony wan reported at ail the warehouses The last of the Imported nonunion hands were placed on the steamer Hoo Hoo about noon and taken to the foot of Stark street where they disembarked and wended their way to the ticket offices to secure transportation to the up country towns from which they were Imported to take the places vacated by the strikers. The last flay of the employment of non-union men was marked by o.uiet and no trouble of any character occurred to call the police into action, for the union men seemed to realize that the least said to the erstwhile occupants of their positions would net them the most in the long run. and the non-union men were permitted to depart without the slightest hindrance. Members of the union were placed at work on the cargo of the British steam ship Hazel Dollar early in the morning and by noon the loading of the big car rier was completed and the steamship cleared from the Custom House with 225.333 bushels of wheat, valued at (V, This cargo was loaded by Kerr, Gif ford & Co . and Is destined for the A. H. Tiennie MilLs at Hongkong. The Dollar will leave down early this morning. She waa one of the few ships of the grain fleet to be worked to any extent during the progress of the strike. Activity on Waterfront. All along the water front was exhibited the liveliest activity yesterday, for in ad dition to the Hazel Dollar another large steamship got away, and in addition the Costa Bica. finished loading for San Fran cisco, and tomorrow the German ship Kereide and the French harks Ville de Mulhouse and Genevieve Molinos expect to finish loading for Europe. The Hazel Dollar carrig the first of a number of similar shipments destined for the new flouring mill of A. H Kennle & Co. at Hongkong, for at the present time a sister ship of this vessel, the Bessie Dollar, is on her way to Portland to load for the same destination. The Hennie Mill will open about the first of the coming month and will require large shipments of grain from America to keep It in operation. The erection of this mill at Hongkong is a new departure for that country for heretofore flour had been shipped direct to Chinese ports Twenty-Two Foreign Ships. Yesterday there were 22 foreign vessels exclusive of the lumber fleet working in the local harbor or on the way up from Astoria All of these vessels are und?r grain charters and as soon as discharged will load wheat for Europe. Six of these vessels arrived in at Astoria since Saturday and most of them are on the way up the river. The British ships Bankburn and Oweenee vfll be in the harhor this morning, and the French bark Empereur Menelik. which reached Astoria about the same time as did the other two. will remain at the lower har br,r until her cargo of 16.000 barrels of cement Is discharged. This cargo is con signed to W. P. Fuller & Co.. and is for the construction gangs on the new rail road on Coos Bay. to which place it is to he transported on the coastwise steam ers visliing that harbor. The British ship Robert Duncan and the Frenih bark Bnffon are on the way up and should reach the harbor this morn ing The Duncan is from Coronel in bal last and Is under charter to load grain for T. M Stevens Co. The Frenchman will be supplied- with a cargo of wheat by Kerr. Gifford & Co The French bark Marechal de Castries was towed around from Puset Sound and will be brought up from Astoria today or tommorrow when a towboat will be available. AVlth the calling off of the grain strike end the sympathetic move on the part of the longshoremen, several buildings on which work was temporarily stopped by the inability of the contractors to secure cement, has been resumed, for the three cement ships in the harbor commenced discharging Saturday and all the material necessary Is now available, for there are other cement ships on the way up, the cargoes of which will be discharged within the next ten days. The British bark Buccleuch will finish dlscliarglng ballast at Banfield's dock this week and will commence loading grain for the Portland Flouring Mills Company next week The Frenchman Europe will also be ready for cargo shortly. Merriam. of the steamer F A Kilburn. which was barbound at Cvs Bay for three days, states that in all the time that he has had command of vessels along the coast he has never experienced such weather as waa en countered by the Kilburn on the laat voyage. He says the Coo a Bay bar waa rougher than the Columbia bar ever gets and for three days the wind and fogs prevented him from getting out to sea. The commander of the Kilburn is also one of the happiest seamen now in port for the reason that on this trip he is accompanied by Phyllus Fancy, his splen did bull terrier,, which is his special pet. A copy of the initial number of the Coos Bay Monthly was also brought by Captain Merriam, and he displays the handsome pamphlet to all his friends in evidence of what has been accomplished at his favorite port along the coast. The Coos Bay Monthly is said to have ac quired wide circulation in Coos and ad Joining 'counties. The publishers expect to place it before the people of Portland in the near future. The Kilburn will sail for San Francisco and way ports this evening. ORIENTAL tilJTER DEPARTS. Xlcomedla Clears With Full Cargo Valued at Sc2 30,000. Plans to Move Stranded British Bark by Hauling Her Overland Into the Sea. Captain J.. H. Boberts is planning to float the stranded British bark Peter Ire dale, which now lies high and dry on the sandy beach back of Fort Stevens. Ac cording to Captain Roberts, the Iredale lies in much the same position as did the Columbia River lightship, which he suc cessfully hauled overland to the Columbia River below Fort Canby. This task In volved considerable ingenuity, for the big vessel had to be placed on rollers and hauled over the sands for about ten miles and then launched in the bay. The only difference in the position of the vessels is that one was wrecked on North Beach and the other is on the Oregon, shore. Captain Roberts will go down to the THE LAST SACKS OF GRAIN INTO THE HOLD OF T HE HAZEL DOLLAR. scene of the wreck today or tomorrow for the purpose of looking over the ground before he figifres on the job. The Iredale lies on a sandy spit, on which the water is shallow for a dis tance of three miles out to sea. This renders hauling the bark off the beach practically impossible, on account of the long stretch of breakers. Captain Rob erts states that a man can walk out in the surf for over a mile and not get into water above his waist. He says the Ire dale was forced farther up on the beach by every incoming wave. The wrecker will examine the ground on a line between the wreck and Young's Bay and also below Fort Stevens, with a "view of selecting the most practical route for dragging the ship back to the ocean. Before he commences work on the vessel Captain Roberts will require a certain percentage of the contract price, and will not attempt the Job on the "no-cure-no-pay" proposition advancedy the underwriters. NEW YORK, Oct. 29 Jewelry manufac turers are busy trying to fill orders which have rushed upon them to an extent never before remembered In the trade. A can vass of the shops shows that with most of the plants running day and night the demand cannot be supplied. The demand for bracelets is said to be the direct cause of the strain upon the capacity of fac tories. The output of these articles is said to exceed, numerically and probably in value, all the others put together. Charged With Theft of Bulldog. HOQUIAM. Wash., Oct- 29. (Spe cial.) A mysterious woman, giving her name as Mrs. George Simons, is taking a deep interest in the ase of three men who were arrested by the police a few days ago as suspected pickpockets. She came to the rescue of J. P. Page and Arthur Young, two of the suspects, yesterday, by furnishing bail for each in the sum of J50. They were held on charges of having opium In their possession. She declared she had no interest in them, except that "Mr. Young was a friend when Mr. Simons died in the East." Attired In a gown of the latest fashion. "Mrs. Simons" sailed into police head duarters, her fingers sparkling with dia monds, and her silk skirts swishing. She hurried to the captain's desk and In quired, '"Is there a Mn. Young here?" "There Is, madame." the captain on duty replied. "What do you wish?" "He Is a friend of mine was with me when my husband died in the East, and If there is anything I could do for him I would do It." came the startling reply. "His bail is $50," replied the captain. "Mrs. Simons" at once" furnished the bail, not only for "Mr. Young." but also for J. P. Page, whom she claimed not to know. She was Introduced in most formal style by "Mr. Young." Later In the afternoon Page came to police headquarters to see if he could make arrangements with Captain Bruin to "stay a while" in Portland. He was promptly ordered out of the station, after being told that he had best refrain from picking any more pockets while his case is pending in the Municipal Court. Captain Bruin - is in possession of in formation that "Mrs. Simons" is none other than Mrs. Pickett, a noted pick pocket. She is believed to be a member of the Page-Young-Williams gang, the members of which were recently arrest ed. They are known to be clever pick pockets. They were caught last Saturday by Acting Detective Price and are now awaiting trial in the Municipal Court. FRAUDS AT LOS ANGELES Registration Rolls Have Been Pad . ded Enormously. LOS ANGELES. Can any cure be more direct or certain? Blood is bound to core bloodlessness. Dr. Williams' Pink J'ills cure anemia, just as food cures hunger. They cured Mrs. Thomas J. MoGann, of 17 Lincoln Place, Plainfield, U. J-, and they can do as much for any other pale, weak, ailing, bloodless person. "In the spring of 1903 I did my usual boose cleaning," says Mrs. McGann, "and soon afterward I began to have the most terrible headaches. My heart would beat so irregularly that it was painful and there came a morning when I could not get up. My doctor said I had auaemia and he was surprised that I had continued to live in the condition I was in. I was confined to my bed for nearly two months, the dootor corning every day for the first few weeks, but I did not improve to amount to anything. "Altogether I was siok for nearly two years. I was as weak as a rag, had headaches, irregular heart beats, loss of appetite, cramps in the limbs and waa unable to get a good night's sleep. My legs and feet were so swollen that I feared they would burst. "One day while I was wondering how long I could live, feeling as I did, I re ceived a booklet telling about Dr. Wil liams' Pink Pills for Pale People. I read it and told my husband to get me some of the pills. Before yery long I felt a change for the better. I have taken about twelve boxes and although I was as near the grave as could be, I now feel as if I had a new lease of life. I have no more headaches, the heart beats regularly, my cheeks are pink and I feel ten years younger. I feel that I have been cured very cheaply and I have recommended Dr. Williams' Pink Pills to lots of my friends."
