TITE MORNING OREGONIAN. FRIDAY. AUGUST 31, 1006. HIPPLE IS PROVED TO BE EMBEZZLER THE OLDS, WORTMAN & KING STORE FIFTH, SIXTH & WASH. STS. THE "DIFFERENT STORE" 2 Stole $5,000,000 He Lent Se gal, Says Trust Com pany's Receiver. MANY SECURITIES MISSING Suicide Bank President Was Partner in Select Girls' . School Earle Suggests Plan to Pay the Depositors in Full. PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 30. Examina tion of the list of securities held by the defunct Real Estate Trust Company to day developed the fact that Frank K. Hippie, president of the institution, who committed) suicide, was an embezzler. The authority for this statement is George H. Earle, Jr., receiver for the Trust Company. Mr. Earle declined to say what securities are missing, but says they amounted to at least $65,000. Mr. Earle further declared that Hippie embezzled the $5,000,000 he loaned to Adolf Segal, the promoter. These loans, Mr. Karle asserted, were personal transac tions. "Although they were made in the name of the bank, the directors had no knowl edge of them, consequently the money was stolen by Hippie" said Mr. Earle. Hippie Partner In Girls' Behoof. Another enterprise in which the dead president was financially interested was discovered today when it bedame known he was one of the incorporators of Miss Wright's select school for ladies at Bryn Mawr, the suburb in which Hippie had his Summer residence. The other incor porators were his son, F. Wharton Hip pie, and Miss Wright. The latter five years ago began teaching school at Bryn Mawr. She made the acquaintance of Hippie's daughter, now dead, and Hip pie displayed a friendly interest in her. I-ast year Miss Wright purchased a large stone building at Bryn Mawr and estab lished her school. Miss Wright said today that Mr. Hip pie visited the Institution two or three times a week. His last visit was made, according to Miss Wright, on Thursday afternoon of last week, the day before be shot and killed himself. Can Pay Dollar for Dollar. In an interview today Mr. Earle reiter ated his opposition to a permanent re ceivership for the Trust Company. This proceeding, he declared, would deprive the concern of its trust funds, which are among its most valuable assets. If all of Segal's enterprises are as valuable as his sugar refinery, he said, their opera tion by the depositors would be more fruitful of results than any other metV od, and he believed through such a plan the depositors would receive dollar for dollar. Hippie Blew Out Brains. . ' Coroner King today admitted that Hip pie committed suicide. When Mr. King made the announcement. Dr. Albert K. Read, coroner's physician, was standing near, and he added: "You can say that Mr. Hippie blew out bis brains. "When I went to Bryn Mawr Satur day morning to Investigate the death of Mr. Hippie, I found he was the president of a trust company, and when I discov ered that he had committed suicide. I decided to suppress the fact for a few days, in order to prevent a run on the trust company. I thought that, if there was anything wrong in Mr. Hippie's transactions, the directors would have a chance to make up whatever defects there were." I The coroner stated that Hippie had placed the muzzle of a 38-caliber revolver in his mouth and shot himself. The ball passed upward and lodged in the brain. The shooting took place In the bathroom. TJie suicide arose shortly before 6 o'clock, and Mrs. Hippie was of the opinion that her husband was taking a bath. YJhen he did not return to his room inside of half an hour, Mrs. Hippie became alarmed and made an investigation. She, found her husband lying on the floor in the bathroom. Carle's Reorganization Plan. Mr, Earle said that the plan for the reorganization of the Real Estate Trust Company was to ask the creditors to take preferred stock in the trjst company for their claims, and appoint their own offi cers in the company. This, he felt as sured, would give the creditors their only chance to get back their money dollar for dollar. Mr. Earle added that he had just discovered that a large asset of the trust company, which it was supposed was not very good, really was backed by names perfectly good, and which could be realized on. This asset is said to be $250,000 in value. PHYSICIANS MUST REPORT BOARD INSISTS OX RECORD OF CONTAGIOUS CASES. Deaths From These Diseases Have Been in Excess of Number of Cases Reported. Vhcn last month's report of the state board of health was compiled, the fact that a far greater number of deaths were reported from contagious diseases than the entire number of cases on which returns had been re ceived was noticeable, and the memr ber3 of the board determined to take stringent measures to compel county health officers to pay stricter attention ' to tho enforcement of rules in this respect. Accordingly orders have been Issued by the board demanding that every physician in the State of Oregon report all cases of contagious diseases Coming- under his care or notice to the county health officer, through whom It will be reported to the state board. By obeying- this important regulation to the letter it will be a comparatively easy . matter to trace such diseases to their source and eradicate the cause. Especially Is this true of typhoid fever, smallpox and diphtheria, and physi cians who do not -comply with this state regulation will find themselves in hot water. A number of ases are cited by the state board wherein contagion was spread among: several towns and in some instances over a good part of the state by the negligence of the attend ing physicians, but it Is hoped and an ticipated that there will be no further occasion to reprimand doctors for not reporting contagious diseases in time to prevent their spread by precau tionary measures Every Word in This Printed Announcement Must be Backed Up by the Goods in the Store OLDS, WORTMAN & KING.
