T TIIE MORXING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY. AUGUST 3, 190G. ART CATALOGUE OLDS, WORT-MAN & KING ANTHONY Comstock's League Seizes It and Arrests Naughty . . Secretary. NUDE PICTURES THE CAUSE studio Raided Because . Catalogue Contains "Immoral" Illustra tions Will Prosecute Miss Robinson. NEW YORK, Aug. 2. Upon a warrant sworn out by Anthony Comstock, secre tary of the Society for the Suppression of Vice, the studios of the Art Students' League, one of the most noted art schools In America, were today searched and the bookkeeper. Miss Anna Robinson, was placed under arrest It was charged by agents of the society that the reproduc tions of figures in. the nude, contained in the Fall catalogue trhlch the League was about to issue, were of an immoral char acter. A patrol wagon load of the catalogues was secured and taken to the Police Court as evidence. Magistrate Mayo ad journed for a further hearing on August 7, the charges against Miss Robinson, the only person placed under arrest. Miss Robinson was arralged as "Jane Doe," on the charge of violation of an act for the suppression of traffic in obscene litera ture, illustrations, pictures, etc. The pamphlet seized by the society's agents is the one Issued regularly each Fall to prospective students, and shows pictures of the work turned out by the students of the League. The issue is styled the American Student of Art, and specimens pictured are such as are seen In any art Btudlo or museum. In the book there are but two pages devoted to the nude. The Art Students' League maintains, at 215 West Fifty-seventh street, studios and apartments for instructions in fine arts. No question has ever been raised before as to the character of the pamphlets is sued or of the art exhibited. MUCKRAKER FILES SUIT Says Porto Rican Officials Conspired to Ruin His Newspaper. NEW YORK, Aug. 2. Hobart S. Bird, who once published a newspaper in San Juan, Porto Rico, has sued eight of the highest officials in the island, including the present Governor and his predecessor, for J100.000 damages in the Supreme Court in Brooklyn. He charges them with hav ing wrecked his paper, ruined his reputa tion and forced him out of the island because he attempted to expose their misconduct and corruption in office. Bird is now practicing law in this city. The defendants named in the complaint are, W. H. Hunt, former Governor, now a Federal Judge in Montana; William Sweet, Attorney-General; James Harlan, son of Justice Harlan, of the Supreme Court of the United States, and former Attorney-General; Regis K. Post, of New York, secretary of the Colonial Board; J. D. H. Luce, of Boston, head of the Span ish Bank of San Juan; James McLeary, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Porto Rico; J. K. Rossi, Prosecuting At torney of the district of San Juan, and Beekman Winthrop, of New York, the present Governor of the island. In the case of Luce, it is charged that a chance to recover 120,000 from the treasury of Porto Rico was of fered to him as a further inducement to join the plot against. Bird. The efforts to injure Bird, the com plaint relates, commenced with a num ber of criminal actions for libel and contempt. Bird edited and published the San Juan News. , Its tone was opposed to much of what took place In the Porto Rico gov ernment. It charged many officials with improprieties in office. When shown the dispatch containing notice of the suit brought by Bird against the past and present officers of the Porto Rican government. Judge William H. Hunt, former Governor of Porto Rico, who is presiding over the land-fraud trials in progress in the United States Circuit Court, said: "Bird conducted a newspaper at San Juan, which he sold out about two and a half years agov This suit evidently grew out of a proceeding taken by Luce some three years ago, foreclosing a lien upon the printing plant of Bird. Luce was a banker at San Juan. Neither I, nor any other American officer, had any Interest In this proceeding. Bird was sued for libel by different persons at different times, but never by any American officer, so far as I recollect. "He was fined In some contempt pro ceedings in court and appealed his case to the Supreme Court of the Island, where he lost. There never was any official or other combination whatsoever against him and his suit is wholly without merit. ANOTHER STRIKE BREWING United Railroads' Firemen and Oil ers Demand Eight Hours. SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 2. The Station ary Firemen and Oilers employed by the United Railroads have demanded an eight hour work day from the company. Unless their demands are granted, it is said they will strike. Thornwall Mullalley, of the United Railways, will give the men an answer some time today, but at noon he refused to say what it would be. When the United Railroads had Its first difficulty with the Electrical Workers' Union, the engineers and firemen re mained at work. They were then work ing ten hours. Mullalley granted the nine hour workday. Now the men want eight hours. Mullalley says that the Construction Workers' Union has tied up the company's work entirely, and the McAllister-street road will be In operation Saturday. He denies further the claim of the electrical workers thatthe company has more cars disabled in the barns than ever before. Mullalley points out that the shopmen are working.
