10 the aioityiyG OREGoyiAar, Monday, august 21, 1905. PORTLAND LUCKS PUfiLtC SPIRIT Ex-Governor Crittendon Has Criticism of Treatment Accorded 6uests. SUGGESTS SOME FUNERALS Prominent MIssourinn Declares He Met Xone of Business 3Icn, Bankers or Builders of City at Congress. "What Portland needs is a number of prominent funerals, with black hearses drawn by four black horses and long and imposing corteges of sincere mourn ers. You have out here the climate, the products, the resources, the country, and you may have the citizens, but I have not seen them. I doubt. If a reso lution had been presented before the Trans-Mississippi Congress thanking Portland for its hospitality, that it would have been passed, for we, the visitors here, have been lot alone, and I have not met a single man of the Trans-Mississippi Commercial Congress who has not felt it to be the case. It is a thing that will be bad for the city when it is told in the East." Thomas C. Crittendon, of Kansas City, cx-governor of Missouri, viewed the clouds floating over the city in white winged flocks and continued to express some of the opinions he had formed after a visit of several days here. His thoughts, some of them, wore energetic, as became the man who freed his native state of the world-known James gang of outlaws at the nominal cost of $20,000 for which service the state paid no part. "What he said was not in complaint but in warning lest Portland and the state fall into the same error and make the same mistake suffered by other cities in times gone past. "It makes no difference to me," he said, "whether the glad hand is hold out or not for I never expect to be here again. I have lived many years at my home and can continue to do so, but the spirit will be bad for the city here." St. Louis and Kansas City Example. "St Louis had to bury some of its old and prominent citizens before it began to grow." continued the speaker." and Kansas City held many important fun erals as a foundation for the progress of the place. Portland will have to follow suit. I have been here several days, and am the representative of the Kan sas City Business Men's Club, yet I have mot none of the prominent men of the city, have seen none of the mer chants, the bankers, the builders who are making the city grow and are stand ing behind public enterprise. What do you think will be the impression then when I return to my home and go among the people of my city -and they say to me 'Who did you meet in Port land? Who are the leading men there?' and I will have to say, I do not know. 1 have met none of them and I did not see them.' " Has Not Met Business Men. "Portland Is a city of roses," said Gov ernor Crittendon, widening on his theme, "yet the delegates to the Congress have seen none of them except on the bushes. Throughout the sessions of the conven tion no one, placed blossoms upon the speakers' stand, no effort has been made to make things attractive. It is argued that the men of the city are too en grossed with the cares of the Exposition to pay hoed to the visitors here, but that should not be. When you go to Kansas City the princes of commerco there have time to shake you by the hand; to speak to you as you pass, and when the Commercial Congress meets there next year It will be welcomed by the city and by the leading men of the city, who will find time to exercise the courtesies of hosts." It was not all censure that the guest had to say however, for on every other point he was an enthusiast concerning what he had seen and hoard. "Of all the things most interesting to me," he said, "the Forestry Building stands first. In contents and in material and in construction it is a thing unique and wonderful, it Is almost incon ceivable to us of the "West as we look at the wonders of the Northwest." The visitor told In glowing terms of the comparisons between the climate of Oregon and that of other places in which he had lived. It was a place that ex celled Old Mexico which had the most wonderful and perfect climate in the world. To come to Portland and the valley at the end of the long ride across the country was like reaching the dream land garden of Paradise. Missouri had it over this state in one thing however and that was in its soil and its corn". In no place under the sun can be found such soil or such corn as is boasted by the state and Inhabitants of the corn cob meerschaum state. Railroads are the thing needed today In Oregon, the speaker argued, and they must be had before the state would or could be great and powerful in compari son to those of the East. J. J. Hill is a man of destiny; one who never did or said a foolish thing, and in the opinion of the Missouri ex-Governor, will work out the salvation of the country, if let alone, even if Harriman never does any thing. Governor Crittendon left last night for his home, over the Northern Pacific, re gretting that he did net have the time and opportunity to make an extended tour of the state to see more closely all of the wonderful things to be found here. Authority on Early History. Professor William I. Marshall, prin cipal of Gladstone Public School, Chi cago, who is in Portland to attend the Historical Congress which will hold its flsst session this evening at the First Presbyterian Church, has been a most diligent student of Pacific Coast his tory, particularly with respect to the part played in the development of the Pacific Northwest by the early mis sionaries, Dr. Marcus Whitman and his contemporaries. The mass of original data he has secured in this connection, which will be published before long, is astonishing. - DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND. Aug. 20. 1905.
