Tea merchants erf this city are in receipt of circulars' from the National 'Tea, Associa tion asking their opinions on the proposed tar it on tea. The question is being vigor ously agitated among the trade in the East. "What the association is striving to ascertain is whether the jobbers are In favor of a 10 cent or lesser duty or any duty at all. Inci dentally the question of a coffee duty has been brought up and has-caused mueh dis cussion. The Government faces a deficit of about $30,000,000 and . Administration .financiers arc casting about for a means of increasing the revenue. During the Spanish War a 10-oont tax was Imposed on tea entries that netted the Government a large sum and worked but little hardship on consumers. In addition to the increase in revenue that would be pro- duced by a moderate tax. it is also argued that the infant tea Industry of North Caro lina would be protected. According to reKrts printed in the trade papers, which have taken up the subject fully, the majority of the members of the tea trade arc opposed to such a heavy duty as 10 cents a pound. They approve of a smaller tax say 2 or 4 cents a pound. It seems very probable that a duty of seme v-inrt win m nlnpftl fn nltlier lea. or coffee for revenue purposes. No coffee Is produced in this country and there Is no excuse for a protective tariff except no far as the Insular industries are concerned. Coffee growers of Porto Rico, Hawaii and the Philippine arc clamoring for a,n American duty on the article that will exempt their product and they will be given a hearing when Congress assembles. hTRAWBERIUKS IN OVER SUPPLY. Consignments From Florin llrrak I lie .Market. ne 'cipts of strawberries were not so heavy yeuerday as the day before, but moro than enough to go around arrived. Of California berries, about 1200 crates were received tin Front street and receipts of Oicgon berries amounted to about 50 crates. A good supply war carried over from the preceding day and these with yesterday" arrivals made a weak market. The fanciest California . berries brought $1.50 a crate and from this figure the price scaled down to cents for the least desirable offerings. While -rmalier receipts arc promised tor today, mere is n.'t likely to be any permanent improve ment during the remainder of the snort sea son The Florin berry association Is pot holding together as strongly a- it did and more or less consigning is sure to result. especially on tho part of the Japanese grow ers who' have discharged their financial obit gallons to the comblnp and are now free to ship hs they please. One straight car has been sent hereon consignment and more may be looked for. Oregon berries ranged in price from 10Q15 cents a crate and wore mostly well matured. Several crates of Jit. Tabor berries were i among the arrivals. Hood .River has begun shipping in .a limited way and will begin putting .berries on this market next week if the price justifies it; if not. they will send their irui't East. CHEESE MARKET STEADY. . Receipts Liberal, but Not Too Heavy Yet. ' Prices In the cheese market are stoadlly maintained. Receipts, while liberal, are not too heavy yet but production Is steadily increasing. Full cream twins arc offered xwthln the range of lift 15 eents and Young Americas .! xent higher. Butter is firm under lighter receipts and con'lnued storing' domand. which, however, were it to cease,, woum instantly cause weakness again. The city creameries hold to the standing quotation o 20 cent. State brands on Front street can be had at from IS to 20 cents with the lower figure shaded on butter not strictly ifresh. The best coun try dairy is quotable at from lli to 1 cents and store" butter is in strong demand at from 14'j to 15Vj cents with wme business reported a half cent better than this. CHICKENS STILL WEAK. Too Many Small Springs Are Being Received. Chicken receipts were liberal yesterday1 and a.1 the dealers did not succeed in cleaning up, The weakness that has lately affected the lien market has now extended to Springs. These are very easy, though not yet appre ciably lower. -Commission men complain of ion many very small chicks coming in. There wan a fair Inquiry for god ducks and llv a"d dreed turkeys are quoted firm. Gecc were w eak. " ' No change was apparent ln the egg situa '.n yesterday, unless It was an Increasing tendency toward weakness. The best eamiled st :vk held at 17i cents and uneandled eggs at 17 cents'. Vegetables Are Cleaning Up. " rry little .green truek arrived yesterday, whl-h enabled the trade to clean up most of the stock on hand. Rhubarb was particularly scarce and was quoted firmer at 23 cents. Oregon peas were in better supply and the price dropped to 70S cent. California peas are abundant, but are held stfady at 5S6 Cfnts. Hothouse cucumbers are steady and ell well at the former range, $1(73.25. Florida tomatoes are easier. . Veal Is Depressed. The vea! market -was depressed yesterday. for though receipts were not so heavy, prices were weighted down by the large available upl" In storage, some of which Is becoming ripe, cooa porn was wanted at the .prices that fcave Utely ruled. There wu also droA8d -for the best mutton, fancy wethers being quoted firm, at 7 cents. Ewes were only steady Aroiuid 'Sfand 6 cents. Beer was steady and unchanged, and lambs moderately firm. Two Car of Orange Arrive. Two car of oranges made up all the heavy receipts yesterday. The t market la mode rately well supplied with' bananas from the recent arrivals. Cherries are coming in more freely and are weakening. Bank Clear legs. Bank clearings or the Northwestern cities cstcrday wsre as follows: Clearings. Balances. Successful Complcllon of London Settlement Is Leading Factor in Upturn of Prices. NEW YORK. May 12. Stocks made a great show of strength today and the demand ex panded sufficiently almost to double thb volume of .the transactions over that of several pre vious day. The dull resisting power shown "by the market this week gave notice that the liquidation had spent Its force, but it was evident from the small recovery" effected up to late yesterday that there must be- a con siderable outstanding short Interest which had refrained from covtrlng in the expecta tion that thero was to be a renewal of the liquidation. The sharp flurry late yesterday In the Northern Securities group demons trated the vulnerable position of this short interest and served to encourage a continua tion of the Competition again today. The movement started In a hesitating way and there were several halbi before it gained headway and spread to Include pretty much the whole list. St. Paul was the leader of this advance and the first rcsponso to IU lead ership was moderate, especially among the other Pacific, which rose strongly yesterday. The movement had to contend also with the sharp weakness of Consolidated and Brooklyn Union das on account of the reduction In their dividends Induced by the agitation toward the enforcement -of lower rates for gas. This announcement today explained yesterday's weakness In those stocks which was attributed at the time to an alleged leak or information on thedcclslon to be handed down by the Supreme Court or the United -State dn a pending franchise tax case The most effective influence towards the re covery In prices was the successful comple tion of the London settlement and London was a heavy buyer here for the new account. There was a resumption of activity also by a number ot old pools In various stocks which have desisted lately from operations under the discouraging conditions in the market. A number of metal stocks which have been un der the influence of merger rumors from time to time were conspicuous Instances ot this kind of activity. Another field of revived activity among the professionals was the cir culation of rumors alleging the existence of plans to Increase dividends on various stocks. Tho subsidiary Pennsylvania stocks and Read ing were notably affected by this Influence. The preliminary estimates of the currency movement promised some decline In the cash Teserves of the banks, owing to tho week's Urge absorption by ths -sub-treasury. Money, however, continued extremely easy. The buy ing and bidding up of stocks was regarded as In large part directed against the short in terest and the forced covering by this element was an important factor on the day's strength Professional profit-taking clipped the day's gains and the closing was dull and heavy Bonds were firm. Dun & Co. weekly review ot trade tomorrow will say: Unsettled weather still retards retail trade, and uneven distribution of moisture prevents crop preepecta from attaining an ideal posi tion. but the general result is much better than normal and far moro satisfactory than at this time In 1901. Mercantile payments are fairly prompt, money Is easy and abundant, while confidence In the future is tbe ruling sentiment The decline In Wall street to the lowest average for the GO most active railway pecuri tlcs since last January has had no perceptible effect on business and railway earnings con tinue to make favorable comparison, with last year figures, tho early returns for April shoeing a gain of 9.7 per cent Manufacturing activity is unabated. Foreign commerce has again shown an Increase at this port over the same week last year, imports gaining $2,100,066. For the- first time in many weeks the comparison as to exports was un favorable, but the decrease was only $275,353. Real estate transfers are heavy in all parts of the country and in addition to the large amount of building operations In progress, the number of permits indicate that much more structural work Is contemplated. Little in terruption in the way ot labor controversy is still cause for gratification. While the hide market has lost none of its strength, it Is lea sactive, but there Is a notable, scarcity of country hides which are especially Arm. Failures this week In the United States are 197. against 202 last week. 204 the preceding week and 236 the corresponding week last year.
