H3093tse. - . . . x-r r ' selling on the advance HIGH PRICES INbU'CE-i LIQUIDA TION IN STOCK 'MARKET. Reaction Follows t'ne' Strong Open ing, but Recovery Near the Close Helps Prices. NEW YORK. April 7. The wave of speou iative enthusiasm -which ' developed in yes terday's stock market .as 'a result of the sud den awakening, in United 'States Steel prc-" ferrod was carried o-er into the early market of . today and w.ept prices quite compre hensively to a higher lcvt vrtth an appear ance of groat animation and buoyancy. But the market underwent a considerable change or. form In he" course ,of the day and. the trading became "much' quieter ? and the tone reactionary by contrast. There was some pressure toTake profits .in recent special favor ites from the outset, and the pressure gained In frce during the day. The change in the market's tone was not based on any widespread general condition, but was explained by considerations of a. narrower si&pe. euoh as have force with boar.d room operators. Traders bought stocks freely while they found that prices advanced easily, and there was ready opportunity to necure proflta for a quick turn. But some of the newer ventures brought out such heavy offer ings' on the advance that the confidence of the traders deserted them. This was notably jrUe of Rock Island, which has enjoyed no notable movement for a long time, and which was taken up by the orofesslonaf operators for that reason alone. They reasoned that a stock so long practically dormant would ad vance easily to a" level of rfadjuKtment with the advances already effected elsewhere. The bidding up of this stock brought out ueh enormous blocks in liquidation that the load proved too heavy to carry. It was evident also that: at the opening high level for United States Steel preferred the attraction -of profits was 10 tempting as to bring In selling orders In excess of the demand. The opening price.. In fact, proved the highest of-the day. Heavy pront-tawng centered In Atchison from the outset. Its late sharp advance yesterday served to bring out selling orders. TVii r.hvlnm tMidenev of the trading tfok away the confidence of the Sp"eculator for the rise and the aggressive demand suosioea grao uallv. Different stocks were taken up In de tail and lifted sharply in the effort to contest the reaction. There was a striking irfovemcnt in American Smelting, which was based upon i-h. nmnii..n that the plan for further combination of' the smelting and lead com panies was nearly acoompUsihcd. The Increase in the dividend of United States Rubber pre ferred heioed the indusirlala generally. In the onenlnir rush to buy much was made of the remarks made by President Roosevelt In a speech yesterday inculcating the de-iraointy of fair treatment to the railroads in any legis latlon for their regulation. A formal intimation on the part of the Harrlman interests of an intention to make no further contest of the Northern Securities case was of some effect. The good pros neete for the Winter wheat crop were as signed as grounds for special strength of -f th Rnuthwejitem railroads. Estimate of the week's currency movement indicated a small gain in each by the nanKs hut call mrtn"y rose again to above 4 per cent. and caused some revival of misgivings over the future supply. .The active speculation of tTifiiurtrialir 'has' resulted" In some ' dooline In their favor as collateral for. loans.
