10 WEE MOBNTNTG- OEEGONIA2T, MONDAY,' MAKOH-' 6, 1&05. BROWNS WIN GAME Manager McCredie's Players Defeat Bakersfield 6 to 2. HAD TO PLAY ELEVEN INNINGS Only a Few of the Local Men Were on1 Hand to Take Part In the First Exhibition of the Practice Season. BAKERSFIELD, Cal., March 5. Spe cial.) Five hundred people saw the Port land team defeat Bakersfield this after noon. It took the BrownsU innings and three pitchers to "win. Essick, St. Vraln and Householder were easily tatted by the local men. Xoung Claflln, who pitched lor Bakersfield, held the big men. to five hits. In the eleventh inning Portland "punched Its hits and scored lour runs. The final score was 6 to 2. The workout today was a strenuous one lor the "Webfooters. McCredie's men had to make a great effort to hold their own. In every Inning Bakersfield had men on bases, and three times the bases were filled, but the balltossers from Portland took a brace each time and retired the side. Collectively Portland played a good game, though rather slow and with fre Quent errors. Some of the players were very stiff, especially St. Vraln and Jones. McCredie played a good game at center, tout was slow in running bases. Manager McCredie expects his entire team will have reported before the mid dle of the week. Then the work of whip ping the team into shape will begin in earnest. SEATTLE'S FUNNY BOAST. Scribes Are Making Excuses for Their Baseball Team. The baseball scribes of Seattle are priding themselves that Kuss HalL manager of the Slwashes. is the only manager in the Pacific Coast League ;who has not predicted that his team would win the penant or be one, two, three. This may be a bit of salve for Hall, but it will produce a laugh around the circuit. The fact of the mat ter is, the Siwashes this year have the appearance of being a slim aggrega tion. The Seattle moguls have grown tired of digging up their "gelt" for star ball players, and this year they are going to try the other extreme. Hall is still having his own troubles! Ho has not come with Nick Williams, Jay Hughes or Tommy Leahy. Hall solu Hughes to Manager McCredie, but when the Seattle fans set up their howl, the magnates skinned it back and wired to Hall to say that it was all a joke. Whether McCredie will pass up thu matter remains to be seen, but there is a disposition among tne fans to ensure the local manager if he lets Hughes go without a fight. Pitcher Nick Williams is still fold ing out. He will not stand for the cut In his monthly revenue. Tommv Leahy. -who was traded to Seattle lor Parke Wilson also refuses to stand for the re Vluction in salary. Hall has been, trying to sell Leahy to Salt Lake and give him half the purchase price, but Tommy 'does not like the looks of the outlaws. Leahy prefers the Coast League for he Is sure they will play out the sched ule. In speaking of his differences with Hall, Leahy said the other day: "I think R.US3 Hall must have a griev ance against me After trying to dis pose of me against my wishes, I back ing one deal in particular, he tenders me a contract on March 2. Now, ac cording to baseball law, a player Is J free if not given a contract to sign by March 1. 1 don't want to take advantage of a little technicality like this, but if Hall doesn't treat me right I will be tempted to. What I want is my release, so I can do business with other clubs before they get all the men they want." DENTISTS PLAY BALL. Juniors of North Pacific College De feat Freshmen. The North Pacific Dental students have started their baseball season by a game between the freshmen and Juniors yester day morning on the Pettygrovc-strect grounds. The Juniors won from the fresh men by the score of 26 to 10. Partisans of the three classes were there to root lor their favorite side. The seniors did their best to encourage the freshmen, but It was of no avail. The Juniors antici pate the pleasure of defeating the seniors next Sunday. The regular college team will bo picked from the different classes after -try-out with the seniors. The lengthening of the college year to June enables the students to put a base ball team in tho field which will bo able to compete with other college teams In this part of Oregon. The line-up of Sunday's game follows: Mount. Gibson c Salman Tamesle. McNerthy. .p ..Short, Powers Oilohrist lb Donahue, Senn Sheehan 2b Powers, Short Gibson.
