12 THE MORNING CKREGOriAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1905. HARRIS SIGNS TEAM Strong Players Will Be Seen With the Seals. STAR PITCHERS ON THE STAFF Joe Corbett and Jimmy Wnalen Have Not Signed Contracts, but Are Claimed by the San Fran cisco Manager. Uncle Hank Harris, manager o the 'Frisco Seals, is the latest of the Pacific Coast League moguls to announce his ball team for 1903. Mr. Harris is very happy over securing the services of young Jim Nealon, the crack amateur flrst-sacker. The Seal manager, just as soon as he put the flippers on Nealon, gave out the line up of his team. Another thing which from all accounts pleases Uncle Hank very much, is the fact that Joe Corbett and Jimmy Whalen will be among the stars of his pitching corps. While Harris has not the signa tures of these two twirlers attached to a. Seal contract, he says he has letters from both James A. Hart, of the Chicago National League team, and Ned Hanlon, of Brooklyn, and ho is willing to wager that Corbett and Whalen play with him this season. The line-up of the Seals fol lows: Pitchers Wheeler, Miller, Sales, Henley rand Hitt signed; Corbett and Whalen to be signed. Catchers Wilson and Shea. Infield Nealon, first; Mohler, second; Gochnauer, short; Irwin, third. Outfield Hildebrand, left; Walters, cen ter; Waldron, right. Utility Wheeler. Harris Talks of His Players. Harris is a pretty fair press agent hlm fcelf. In fact, he is a shade better than Clique Fisher because he sticks to the "dope" when he talks about his players. Of his 1903 team, Harris is quoted as Baying: "Hitt Is a left-hander and pitched a Same for me against Los Angeles. New ton was the opposing pitcher, and the An gels beat us 3 to 1 With any kind of support, Hitt would have shut them out, but Phil Knell, who was playing second, made a couple of unfortunate errors, which lost the game. "Henley is a Sacramento boy and pitched in the Oregon State League last season. Sales pitched in the Northern California League' and is almost as large as Overall. People who have seen him play say that he has great speed. "Roscoe Miller is unknown here, but he has always been a major leaguer, having pitched for Detroit in 1902, New York in 1903 and Pittsburg in 1904." He is a large man, and Corbett and Shay, who saw him work last .season, say he will be a ton-notcher. "Gochnauer was full of rheumatism last season and unable to show his real form, and I know his playing created a great deal of unfavorable comment, but I have every confidence in his ability. His rheu matism has disappeared, and I hope he will show his true form this season. You kfiow, a man who could play short on the Cleveland team for two seasons along side of two such stars as Lajole and Bradley must be a player of considerable ability. "The team will show a great Improve ment over last year in various depart ments. Wo have been greatly strength ened in pitching and catching. In base running and general inside play. "We leave for VIsalia, our training quarters, Mnrch 1, and return on the 17th, playing the Chicago League club March 18 and 19." Andy Anderson Left Out. It will be noticed that Harris has left out Andy Anderson. Andy has been win tering in Portland, and has been waiting to see what Harris was going to do. Sev eral times Andy has written the Califor nia magnate, but up to the present time Harris has not answered. Andy will now get busy, for he has several flattering of fers in sight.
