THE H0K3TIKG QJUSGQlXlf, BIOAX, 13,, 1903. id IRON MARKET QUIET Trade Passing Through Usual Inactive Periods HEAVY OUTPUT 0EJP"IG IRON : y Demand FrormRlpe Founderies an Ex ception Railway Buying Is Not as Large -as It Was Ex pected to Be. "" CLEVELAND. O.. Jan. 12. The Iron Trade i Review this week .says: The usual January quietness of the iron market Is substantially unbroken. Inquiries for pig iron for pipe foundric- are an 'exception to the rule, one company option coveripg 30,000 tons, and ; round sales aro expected this week. The pig Iron output of the United States Steel Cftrporatlon Is now greater than at any '.Ime. Of all furnaces wing Lake Superior erc and reporting to the Bessemer Pig Iron Association, 60 per -cent of the capacity was active on January 1. as against "8 per cent on December 1 and 45 per cent on January 1, :iKK. Railway buying, has not been as large thus ar as It was expected to be. but the pro gramme of railroad financing has not developed fvr 1803. so that further time may elapse be fore mill schedules are affected. Bridge work, I u believed, will be on a cale much larger fjan in 1904, if plans already well along are l.ot Interrupted. The real business of the week las included 30,000 tons closed In the Chicago c'trl. t. but the trade still waits for much tf the large tonnage that was talked of two months ago as certain to be placed when the irlce for J003 was announced. SENSITIVE FEARS LEISL"ATION TO REGU LATE CORPORATION AFFAIRS. Fropcwed Pennsylvania Bond Issue Has Adverse Effect n the - BullishVslhtlrnent. NEW YORK. Jan. 12. Selling predominated over buying' in the stock market, operations to day, but the transactions were no less strictly professional than they have been ever since New Tear's. The traders eeemed prompted to sell mainly by their disappointment over the futility of previous; attempts- to get price higher. Some -of the day's 'developments of fered a nominal cause for the depression, but there was little evidence of real liquidation, th traders simply endeavoring to anticipate what the action would be of, real holders of stocks. There Is undoubtedly considerable unsettle ment of mind among speculators, over the varying and contraofctory report "from Wash ington regarding the legislative programme The weight of opinion today was definitely on the side of aggrccatve insistence by the Presi dent upon measures to regulate railroad freight rates and corporation affairs, with the question of tariff revision relegated to the background. The financial district showed its usual sensitiveness to the animation of these subjects. The action taken by the Pennsylvania di rectors toward a $50,000,000 bond Issue had an adverse effect on bullish sentiment, although some such action has been pretty clearly ex pected. It has been urged by the advocates of active speculation that the great Interests which have these new issues in view would be anxious to foster an active stock market to assist in floating them. But that did not prevent a characteristic reversal of the point of view in today's trading to the apprehension that the prospect of sew offerings would stag- sate the demand for securities already in the market. Some of the stocks which, hsve had the benefit recently of rumors of increased dividends were notable eufferers in today's re action. The movement of these stocks had a Urg sympathetic effect on the "whole list. A rathsr more active Inquiry was reported for time loans for the longer periods and the further, advance is foreign exchange offered no prospect of any cessation of the outward m6vement of gold, although discounts in Lon don were appreciably easier. Jan. 12. Following lower prices at Liverpool, the wheat market here waa rather weak at the opening. May being off a shade to H0Uc at $1.164SL17H, The weak ness of foreign markets was said to be due to report from Odessa to the effect that the wheat crop of Southern Russia is In excellent condition. The heavy fsll of snow In the United States throughout the West and South west -was reported as affording ample protec tion for the Winter wheat crop of this country There has previously been considerable anx iety as to the possible damage by cold weather. The bulls, however, found encouragement in the continued small movement in the North west. Later the market became strong on a fairly active demand from several prominent commission houses. An assurance from Min neapolis that the flour mills there would not close was a possible reason for the revived demand. On the bulge May sold up to $1.17VJ. BLANCHE BATES AS THE SHREW Portland Girl, Makes a Decided Hit Before Bay City Audience. SAX FRANCISCO. CaL. Jan. 12. (Spe cial.) Blanche Betes gave a special mat inee performance, at the Grand Opera- Housc here this afternoon of "Katherine and Pctrucio," "William Winter's version of The Taming of the Shrew." which he wrote for the late Edwin Booth. The Shakespearean comedy scored a splendid success, and at the end of the perform ance Miss Bates was forced to make a speech. In which she stated that she hoped to play a. Shakespearean piece next season. - After the performance a statement was given out that at the end of the pres ent season David Belasco had arranged to make a special production of "Ham let" in New York. Chicago and Boston. with David Warrield, who Is now ap pearing In "The Music Master," as Hamlet and Miss Blanche Bates as Ophelia. The production will be staged under tho personal supervision of Belasco and pre sented in three houses In New York, Chl cago and Boston, which are not con trolled by the theatrical trust. Months ago it was announced that Blanche Bates would appear here in her present success, "Tho Darling of the Gods." and local, theater-goers were an ticipating much pleasure from the en gagement. Her managers' have been nego tiating for some time' for dates at the Co lumbia and the Empire, but it Anally de velops that they cannot secure time at cither house. Owing to the fact that Miss Bates is an Independent star, she, of course, cannot play at the Marquam. which is controlled by the syndicate, and Portland has been dropped from the Bates Itinerary- This will be generally regretted here, for in a eense Miss Bates Is a Portland girl and this city has always felt a strong interest In her. The announce ment that she Is to attempt Shakespear ean roles Is a great surprise to her friends here, and her career In the classic drama will be followed closely. Skates Dug Up at Kalama. KALAMA.
