10 THE MOBNISG GREGORIAN, MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1ML ? BRITT NEAR WEIGHT Only One Pound to Lose Be fore Tuesday Night NELSON IS IN GOOD TRIM Takes a Run of a Few Miles on the Road, and Puts in a Couple of Hours With the Gloves. SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. IS. (Special.) James Edward Britt and Battling Nelson have let up In their training:. Today neither fighter did hard work. Britt went out on the road during the morning hours, walking and jogging for a distance of five miles. Thla afternoon he did some spar ring for the edification of a horde of vis torc. among whom were a number of women. Tonight he was still one pound oer weight. bu confident that the excess will have disappeared without the assis tance of further fast work by Tuesday morning. Britt is in excellent trim and has the utmost confidence that he will win. Judg ing from the talk in the Britt camp, the fight is expected to be a fast one from the etart, with an announcement of the winner before two-thirds of the sched uled number of rounds shall have been concluded. Nelson appeared to be in better trim today than he dida week ago. There was not so much of the gaunt appearance no ticeable heretofore as a sequence to his continual training. As he is fighting at a weight that he likes, he has not had to wear himself out to reach the limit. Nel son "hit" the road this morning for a run of several miles. It was announced that he would eschew gymnasium work for the day. but the irrepressible Dane, crav ing something to do, put in a couple of hours with the apparatus and in light boxing bouts. The odds on the fight were 10 to S today. with Nelson on the short end. Tomor row, when betting will begin in the pool rooms. 10 to 7 will be the opening quota tion. It is expected that this figure will prevail up to the hour when the men enter the ring. VANQUISHED MEN RETURN. The Multnomah Team Is Back From Seattle. The Multnomah Club's football team returned from Its Seattle trip last night with each man firmly determined to "work from now until New Tear's with the sole view of turning the tables on the Seattle men on that day. While defeated last Saturday, the Joss of the game was not altogether due to inferior playing on the part of the Portland men, nor to any gTeat superiority of the Seattle Athletic Club. The Multnomahs found a serious handicap in the condition of the field. The team is accustomed to nothing but a sawdjust field with hard, firm footing. Saturday's game was played at thn Recreation Baseball Park, where . the entire field was covered with long grass, with the exception- of occasional hare spots. The ground was soggy, and as a result the Portland men, un accustomed to such conditions, found it extremely difficult footing. The halves would start witH the ball, a foot would slip, and before recovery rould be made the man would be tackled. Both in offensive and defensive work the Seattle men found the field a great aid. Another criticism made was tha't ' of the officials. At times it did not seem as if Knight, the referee, was as im partial as could be expected, and in one or two cases the decisions worked a serious disadvantage for the Mult nomahs. Multnomah made another find when Keller decided to play a tackle posi tion rather than center. Saturday was his, first game in that position, and his work showed that to be his pcoper place. The work of Jordan and Dowling was seen to advantage in Seattle and but little yardage was ever made around them. Johnson's passing and punting was also a feature of Multnomah's Play. The victory was a great surprise to the Seattle people, who had it figured out that Multnomah would win by a score of at least 18 to 0. Now that they did win, the Northern men ara going to work harder than ever in the hope that they can do the same trick on New Year's day. The Seattle Athletic Club has got to gether one of the cleverest teams on the Coast. They are comparatively light, but fast, and in a few of their men they have stars. Dr. Roller par ticularly is a notable player, and th score was due entirely to his brilliant line-plunging. Time after time h would go through Multnomah's lin for distances of from five to 25 yards. "While in Seattle the Multnomahs wer the fruests of the Seattle Athletic Club. in their recently built clubhouse, and nothing but praise is heard regarding the treatment received. CITY STATISTICS.
