The first enow of the season fell here yester day evening about four Inches in three hours. Stockmen in this county will be compelled to begin feeding now. as the grass on the ranges Is well covered. This Is the first time this Fall that it has been necessary to feed, while last year at this time stockmen had been feed ing for a month. It is thought that as the feeding season commences to late, there will be plenty of hay to supply all demand, and furthermore that hay will be cheaper than for years. Several sheepbuyers are in this county at present, looking up the market. They are offering $2 per head for Spring lambs. E. J. Bell, of Laramie, Wyo., is among the buyers, and expects to secure several thousand bead for Spring shipment. Some wool Is being contracted from this county to Eastern buyers for1 delivery Tiext July. Their prices range from i3c to 16fi per pound. ADVANCE . IN STOCK SATES. Polk County Shippers Do Not Take Kindly to It. INDEPENDENCE. Or.. Dec 13. (Special.) New freight rates oh livestock shipments to Portland -went Into' effect today, and shippers from here do not take kindly to tlx change. Under the new rates, there Is an advance of from $25 toy$42. on the car from Independence to Portland, This increase In freight will, if If maintained, be a setback to hog-ralslng In this part of the. Valje.y, shippers claim. The production of hogs has been on the Increase In Polk County the past few years, and the quality has been notably good. Sheeprainors arc not so much concerned about the increase in freight rates as hograisers, since cheep may be driven. In fact, under the old rate, large bands of sheep have been driven out of Benton and Polk Counties to the Portland stockyards within the past few months. Brown Bros, drove out a band of 1140, and John Redd, a band of about the same number. LIVESTOCK MARKET. Prices at Portland Union Stockyards Tec terday. The Stock. Exchange spent another bad half hour after the opening. Prompt and vigorous measures were adopted by several powerful capitalists to avert a dis aster, and . the headlong downward plunge of prices ws almost Immediately checked! A feverish tone persisted during a part of the spasmodic recovery, and then the market set tled down. The higher level thus attained had the effect of Inviting some renewed sell ing, and the manner In which prices melted away under this light prersure revived the nervous feeling which was only partly allayed. The whole market showed a close sympathy with Amalgamated Copper throughout, and it was the determined support of that stock against the opening pressure that gave -fore to the supporting measures elsewhere after the first plunge. Amalgamated Copper fell back to Its last night's level for a moment, after moving a point higher at the opening, but when It was perceived that It would not yield below that, the market advanced. This stock again demonstrated Its effective dom inating power of the market In the last hour. At that time a level of prices had been at tained for the principal market leaders from 1 to 2 points above last night. Amalgamated Copper Itself had risen 5H over tho final price of yesterday. When the sudden reversal in the movement of Amalgamated Copper was seen to be a false start, there were recoveries almojt as sudden as the reaction. But this was not en tirely convincing to sentiment, and the clos ing evinced much hesitation and uncertainty. The break at the opening cost the price level quite generally from 1 to 3 points. There were much larger declines In some stocks, but they were net representative of the active list. The morning break had the result of making some prices lower than those of the low point on Thursday last, but it could not be said that the average level of the market -was be low that point. It was rather evident that It was the Intention of the supporters of the market that It should not. ao that would have had the efTect of exhausting margins and un covering top-los orders, which were not dis turbed by last week's raid, and thus bring an additional avalanche of liquidation upon the market. It Is evident that down to that level the weak holdings have been pretty well swept out of the market. General news features received little atten tion, although the continued rise In sterling exchange caused some discussion of the prob ability of largo gold exports. Money was very easy, and not a factor in the market. Bonds declined early, but showed some re covery. Total sales, par value, $7,240,000. United States bonds were uhchanged on call.
