-10 THE MORNING OBEGONIA,, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1904. PRANKS ARE MANY Halloween is Celebrated With Due Frivolity. ONLY ONE BOY ARRESTED Police Department Kept Busy Answer ing Teiephone Complaints Re garding Minor Depredations and Gate Stealing. V "Hello, Is this the Police Station? Send a. detective here right away. That bad Riley boy next door has taken away our gate and It we don't find It the cows will set out. Can you let Joe Day come out and watch the cows while we find the! gate-?" This and kindred complaints poured in- to the Police Station last night In an endless stream. Station Officer 1.1111s was kept busy answering the telephone from nightfall until daybreak this morning. Hoodlums were demolishing fences in this part of town, boys were tearing down a house In that end. Every policeman on the force, day men and night men, every detective, every special was on duty last night. The city swarmed with policemen, and the boys attempting to celebrate Halloween found themselves very much up against the real thing. In some in stances the boys objected to an officer's presence. An officer was stoned in the neighborhood of Eighteenth and Thurman streets and assistance had to be sent to him. But with all the bustle there were few arrests and not much damage. A few gates are perhaps missing this morning, sonra sidewalks are torn up, and the ef fects of other depredations of like char acter "are noticeable, but there was a happy absence of destroyed, property and not much noise. Hoodlums turned in a Are alarm from,! box 32 at 8 o clock and toe department made a run, only to find no Are. There were an abundance of tricks played over the telephone. Jack-o-lan terns could.be -seen throughout the residence district. There were many Halloween parties and the young people enjoyed themselves gen erally. It was the boys' night to howl. They howled If an officer chased them and they howled If no officer could be seen. They tormented timid maidens and tick tacked old maids' windows. They made assaults on the woodsheds and attracted the wrath of the property-owners, while companions quietly removed the front gates and carried them to parts unknown. It was reported from South Portland that an officer -attempted to stop young men who were wheeling away a buggy, and that the officer was made "a prisoner and forced to ride three blocks In the self same buggy, much to the merriment of the neighborhood. There were no reports at police head quarters of serious destruction of prop erty. Word came in that boys were de molishing an unoccupied house in North' Portland, but investigation showed it to be untrue. "Word was also received that a crowd of boys were attempting to de molish the Welnhard brewery, but Inves tigation showed they were only demolish ing the product thereof. Chief Hunt had the town flooded with -policemen. In uni form and plain clothes, and it didn't take the boys long to find it out. And when they did, the pranks were played on the policemen instead of the property-owners. Many an officer was suddenly sent for to put a stop to depredations only to find when he arrived that the emerg ency call was a hoax. Up to midnight only one boy had been arrested, and he was afterward released, the complainant discovering that he had caused the wrong boy to be taken into custody. Early in the evening it was reported that boys were having a gay time on Portland Heights, where police protection is poor. Captain Moore immediately or dered a squad of officers there, and the reports of mischief stopped coming in. On one trip to Albina, when two drunken French sailors were captured, the patrol wagon passed 12 officers and saw " but three boys. The East Side was the scene of the most mischief, and in spite of the numerous officers, the boys apparently had their time. HAUMONY AMONG THE BARBERS Bosses Will Let Ten P. M. Shop Work Its Own Cure. Harmony reigned among the boss bar bers at their meeting last night, the only discussion coming up over the profit-cut ting 10 P. M. closing hour. But that was only discussed generally, as the bosses have decided to give the Hotel Portland shop ample time in which to find out whether they could not as well close at S. The latter hour would gladly be taken up by all the other shops, and If the Hotel Portland shop can handle Its trade and close at 8, all wllL The bosses speak as if that would really be the outcome of the present xulxed-up condition. The association formed by the bosses took on definite form last night with the election of permanent officers. F. J, Browning was made president: F. T. Rogers, -vice-president; S. H Howard, sec retary, and A. Jubltz. treasurer. In add! Hon an advisory committee was appointed consisting of J. D. Neldermeyer, TJtwis Henry, Chester Hare, W. H. Ewell and George Febvet. The bosses state that they wish all bosses to join the association for a par ticular reason. It is part of the history of exposition cities that a roan Is likely to bj charged any price for a shave, de pending on whether he gets Into a decent shop or a cheap one where the customer Is charged about as much as he will stand without calling in the police. The asso ciation hopes to become so well organized by next Spring that It will be able to fight these irregular shops during the Fair and force them Into line with regu lar prices. , BUSINESS ITEMS.
