THE MORlOTa OBEGONIAN, M02JDAY, 'AUGUST SI, 1903. MONEY COMING TO THEM -MANY" VETERA?. S WHO DO TfOT COL LECT THEIR PAT. JLdJataBt-GCHcral Prepares List et Indian. "War Seldler "Who Are GeveraaeBt's Creditors. Tha Commissioner of Pensions is reject ing the claims for pension of some veter ans of the Indian traxs because there is no record of their having been mustered Into the Federal service, nor any record of their having received pay from the United States Government The law prorvldes that pensions shall te paid only to those -who, if not actually In the Federal service, have at least been paid by the National Government. So strictly Is this lair Interpreted that V. veteran may have money due him from the Government,- but if he has not col lected it, he is held to have not received pay and many pensions have been re jected on this ground. Adjutant-General C. TJ. Gantenbeln has prepared a list of all persons who served in the Oregon regiments during the In dian -wars, who have money awaiting their order at Washington, D. C and the amounts due. None of these sums have been collected by the old soldiers to whom they belong, or by their heirs. The im portance of making an early collection of this money lies in the fact that the record of actual paynient by the Government will afford sa'tisfactory evidence for those who are applying for pensions. The names marked with asterisks are known to be the names of living persons, and the amounts due those who are dead may be collected by their heirs. The Government especially insists that the services of an attorney are not needed, but that appli cation should be made direct to the Auditor of the War Department at Wash ington.
