19 SHOW A LARGE GAIN No Diminution in Increase of Railway Earnings. THIRTEEN PER CENT LARGER Trade and Industry Progress Well Despite Drawbacks In the Shape'" of Xnrnerom- .Labor Troubles LoenI Prodnee Quotations. NEW TORK. April 2L-R. a. JXm A Co-'s weekly review of trials tomorrow will say: Trads responded promptly to better weather in many ectlon or the eountrr. notable activ ity appearing In seasonable lines of wearing apparel, yet wholesalers report conservatism as compares with earlier months this year, al though business Is more active than It was a Tear ago. Borne branches are still backward, and there Is more or less complaint regarding collections, whlls renewals are frequently' asked. Outdoor work Is vigorously prosecuted, agri cultural communities endeavoring to make op lost time, and structural undertakings call for large quantities of lumber and building mate rials, sustaining quotations. Labor problems are being carried on with celerity. Lake nav igation has had the expected effect in reducing rail freight congestion, and shipments are more prompt, yet there is no diminution in the splen did Increase of gross railway earnings, which thus far show a gain of 13.1 per cent over last year's figures for April and SJ per cent over 1901. A fact that Is especially noteworthy as to the situation in the iron and steel Industry is that the scarcity of coke is no longer cause for com plaint; on the contrary, in some cases deliv eries are so large as to threaten accumulation, and predictions as to the permanence of high prices have ceased. Clothiers complain, of tardy deliveries of sam ples, which may afford subsequent business. New England manufacturers of boots and shoes report a seasonable lade of new business, and further contracts from Jobbers ae not ex pected during (be next fortnight. Increased activity and strength has come In Chicago packer hides with the advancing season. Fluc tuations la quotations of the great staples have been less extensive during the past week, with a slightly higher level as the net result, and only a fair degree of activity. Failures this week, were 183 la the United States, against 213 last year, and 15 in Canada, compared with 18 a year ago. Hank CleartriKs. NEW TORK. April Si. Lnbor Tronblea and Cool Weather Do Xot Seriously Interfere. NEW TORK. Arrll 24. Bradstreefa tomor row will say Trade and industry progress welt despite drawbacks in tbe shape of numerous lsbor troubles and cool weather conditions In some eectlons. Retail trade, as a whole, is fslr. Collections continue slowly but steadily to im prove. Manufacturing industry was never so active, except perhaps la tbe textile trades, where a few lsbor troubles limit cotton goods production, but In Iron and steel, lumber, shoe manufacturing, machinery and a multitude of other lines production is close to the maximum. Jlallroad earnings continue large. The shut down of Northwestern flour mills proved to be only temporary, and the point sought, lower rites for the product, has evidently been gained. Judging from the Increased outgo of flour from nearly all shipping centers. The line of demarcation between crude and finished forms of Iron and steel has become mors distinct this week. Pig iron has eased in price and buyers are backward, evidently hoping for further concessions, while the latter rart of the 5 "ear's requirements are reported still unplaced. Tbe effect of the present high prices of cot ton on tbe manufacturing branches Is not en tirely favorable. Buyers of cotton goods are "holding back, and an very alow to commit themselves. Raw wool, while dull, is rather firmer is tone, and advices from primary mar kets ara that the new dip win be held at 182c arxwed above last season's opening quotations. Grocery markets tar. been active this week; the leader being sugar, which continues Its ad vane from the low point reached soma weeks ago. The majority of staples enow a striking steadiness. Wheat, including Sour, exports for the week ending April 23 aggregate "U&S.S42 bushels, against L30.63 bushels in the week a year ago. Wheat exports since July 1 aggregated 183.087.003 bushels, against 210.530,333 bushels last season. Business failures 4a the United States for the week number 102. against 181 In the Ilka week of 102. In Canada for the week. 13 against 20 one year. ago. POItTLAXD MARKETS. Grain. Flour. Feed. Etc. PUBLIC -HOLDS ALOOF XO OUTSIDE 1JCTEREST I.w STOCK: SPKCXJULTIOS. Forecast of Bank Statement Has Stiffen in r Effect on Stocks Moner Marker Conditions. . NEW TORE. April 24. Dealings la 'stacks fell back again today .to near the low levet of i rear, partly as a rerutf of the dlsappotnt ment of the professional dement over the fail ure of the removal to the new exchange, build laxMo stimulate activity yesterday. The fall ing off in dealings waa attributed la part to tha banishment from the boardroom of a class ot traders who -formerly had the privilege of admission to the lobby ot the exchange for the purpose ot directing their trades over the rail ing. It la evident, however, that the publia is en tirely indifferent to the, market for the pres ent. So long aa this condition prevails, purely professional operations are likely to prove fa tile in effecting any wide movement of prices. The dullness of today's market was only equaled by Its Inertia. Only a half dozen stocks of any prominence got as much aa a point away from last nlgaf a level at any time. Tbe sluggish course of the market was down ward early in tbe day. largely through mere Inanition. Boms depression of sentiment waa caused by the dlsaproval of the newly inaugu rated freight rates from Chicago to New" Tork by the present Interstate Commerce 'Commis sion. Much Importance is attached to the ad vance in freight rates as an offset to the in creased cost of operation, which has produced the recent downward tendency la the net re-, turns from the transportation industry. The rise in freight rates has beea so general that it Is feared the decision of the Interstate Com merce Commission is preliminary to similar ac tion toward other railroads. There was selling of stocks for London ac count There was also a strong tone" In the sterling exchange market, and an advance to within measurable limits of the geld export point. Later in the day. -the forecast of the bank statement had a stiffening effect on stock. The prevailing ease of the .money mar ket confirms the belief that the position of the banks has been much strengthened. Reading waa run up a point on account of testimony of the president of the company before the Inter state Commerce Commission. The notable ad vance In the silver market was the basis of large buying of Mexican railroad stocks, owing to the increased exchange value of Mexican money which resulted. Amalgamated -Copper suffered from tbe weakness ot the copper mar ket. Tbe market dosed intensely dull, but fairly steady at the late recovery. There waa some continued demand for the newer issues of railroad bonds. Otherwise, the bond market waa irregular. Total sales, par value. 12,035,000. United States bonds were ail unchanged on the last call. STOCKS. Atchison ........... do preferred ...... Baltimore Ohio.... do preferred Canadian Pacific ....
