EXPOSITION' jrCttDtSO, To mcat. Fottrta nmi. tho Portland. Kennel Quo, Better ron Visitors. There la much more room and comfort for persona -visiting the County Recorder's office to ex amine records, or for any other purpose, since eight of the cars loaded with 00 record books each have been located per manently In the nig vault provided for records. The wheels have been taken oft the cars, and four cars placed on top of the other four, with an alley between and a passageway all around, so that any volume of records desired can be easily got at, and a wide shelf along each side of the vault makes a very convenient place for examining records. Two cars containing the latest record books, some not yet filled, are allowed to remain In the office during the day. but take up very little room. The long steel Index case at the north wall of the office has been raised a little higher, which makes It much more convenient, and the slop ing shelf in front, on which, the Indexes are laid to be examined, has been made less sloping, which Is another Improve ment. It had so much slant that the books often used to slide oft and tumble on the toea of those examining them. The changes suit everybody, especially those who had to wheel the eight heavy cases of records In and out of the vault every day. The Increased space gives visitors more liberty and privileges, and Captain Alexander, who has had a chair their, and has been making abstracts of records for a generation, is occasionally discommoded by some of the callers "ab stracting" his chair, which, though only a cheap and well-worn affair. Is the only one in the office he can be comfortable In. The next janitor who hides that chair will wish he hadn't. This Tree Not Spaded. Half a dozen cords, more or less, of mighty poor wood ricked up In the gutter on Fifth street, near Lincoln. In front of a stretch of new cement sidewalk, is all that remains of what was the largest remaining poplar tree in the city a Tew days ago. Lovers of shade trees, when they saw this tree standing after the sidewalk had been completed, were In hope that it was going to be spared, but suddenly arrived "Tom" Scott, contractor for removing shade trees, and undermined the trunk of this grand old tree, which was 5 feet through and towered to the stars. Down it came with a crash which shook the neighbor hood, and saws and axes soon made kind ling of It. When Scott was asked If he did not regret destroying such a grand old tree, he said he did not. It was all a matter of business with him, and he had disposed of over 200 shade trees along the streets of Portland, some of them larger than this. What he did regret was having been delayed till the sidewalk was laid, whereby his work was doubled, so that he was poorly paid for it by what be had contracted to do It for. He said some unpleasant things about his luck in this matter, but allowed that having agreed to remove the tree, he was bound to do it. Baseball Tonal 2:30 East Eights akd Hawthorke. Or Me! An im mense cactus in a box was brought to the City Hall some time ago. probably In' tended for an exhibit in the free museum. It is about the size of a man. and looks like a monstrous spiny cucumber. Just whether it Is alive and expected to cover Itself with magnificent blossoms, or whether It is a desiccated vegetable, is not known to the employes about the building; but. as It has the general ap pearance erf an encoffined cadaver, they are anxious to have the box put out of sight and the huge columnar cactus planted in some out-of-the-way corner, where it may bloom unseen and waste its sweetness and wealth of long, "sharp spines on the desert air. When Forestry Expert A. J. Johnson comes to town, he will probably attend to this. Chinook Salmon in Market. There was plenty of genuine Chinook salmon in the market yesterday. The fish appeared to have been waiting for the season to open, and were battering at the doors of markets by the ton for entrance before E o clock in the morning. They were re' eelved with open arms, and taken in by the ton. and fine big fellows of CO pounds or more were numerous! Most of them came from Oregon City way. Numbers of them were shipped to San Francisco, Puget Sound and all over the Northwest during the day. They retailed at 1IH cents per pound, and are much better than the salmon which have been coming in on ice from San Francisco and Puget Sound for the past month or two, while tons have been caught In the Columbia and Willamette and pickled. Policemen Purr and Blow. City j'nysician 2an. asswea oy Dr. Slocum. yesterday commenced making physical examinations of the rather Urge list of applicants for positions on the police force. They managed to get through with ten during the afternoon, and. judging from the appearance of the men as they came out. puffing and blowing, they had gone through a "pretty severe course of sprouts." one expressed it- The doctors will try to dlapose of ten a day till they reach the end or tne list. All those ex amined yesterday were able to satisfy the examiners as to their physical qual ifications for filling the position of police man, but it now remains lor them to sat' Ufy the Civil Service Commission. A great many people who had occasion, to travel on the upper end of Washington street yesterday were surprised to see a force of graders at work cutting a street through the tier of doable blocks between Twenty-second and Twenty-third streets, from Washington to Everett streets. They were anxious to know why this was being done, and in an effort to ascertain, the following information was elicited: Twenty-one years ago William M. Ladd and Fred R. Strong, then both "young fellows." invested $15,000 in a tract of un improved land on the outskirts of the city, owned by William L- Halsey. a partner of Ben Holladay, containing J acres. Many old-time residents will re member Mr. Halsey. who, with his fam ily, sojourned here for several years. Since that time three streets have been extended through the tract Cornell. Ev erett and North Twenty-third. Now Messrs. Ladd and Strong are about to plat the tract in conjunction with some fractions of the adjoining Meade estate, which squares up corners, and will make In all about SO lots, and will be called the Strong Addition. They are having a street SO feet. In width, opened through this tract, from Washington to Everett, which Is to be named Lucretla street, work on which was begun yesterday, and the grading of which will be completed in about ten days. This information will probably satisfy all anxious inquirers, but It may be stated that it is proposed to lay gas and water mains in Lucretla street, and Improve it with bituminous macadam before putting the property on the market. As lots in that locality are worth from J3O0O to $3500 each, it is prob able that, notwithstanding Interest and taxes. Messrs. Ladd'and Strong are like ly to make something on their Investment of long ago. Potato-Mabexrs Mat Be CiT.T.m Out. The striking of workmen has now reached a stage when people are begin ning to joke about it. On Front street yesterday it was rumored that the potato markers had struck. There are three of these artists, who mark sacks of potatoes on the docks for shipment on the steam ers, and it was said that. If an increase of wages was refused them, they would call out every man In town. "And it is Just safe to bet," continued the narrator, "that they will 'come out, too.'" The demand of truckmen and draymen for an Increase of wages has recalled a similar strike two years ago, and the case of an employer who replied that he could not stand the Increase, as he was making nothing. To this his employes replied that, as he had charged his bookkeeper with embezzling $30,000 of his funds, with out his knowing It, it was evident mat ne had been making money without know ing It. and the bookkeeper bad, therefore, taken It. As to the threatened strike of the truckmen and draymen, it Is said they are sure to get the advance asked for, as the porters In warehouses and stores will not help to load trucks driven by non union men. Raised Rent Without Owner's Con sent. Increase of rent has troubled many poor people In this city of late, but yesterday a wealthy man had trouble from the same cause. He bought a house and lot a month ago for $10,000, which promised to be a good paying investment, as the tenant was one who paid the rent promptly. Yesterday the purchaser com ing by the property saw the people mov ing out, and was told that their reason for moving was that the rent had been raised. This rather astonished him, as he bad not ordered any Increase of the rent. On Inquiry, he found that the agent of the former owner had taken it upon himself to raise the rent. "Now," said the new owner, "I shall have to over haul and repair and renovate the house throughout at a considerable expense, and be getting no rent for a long time, and, after all. will have to hunt up a new tenant, and perhaps get a bad one. I don't like this at all," he said, producing the card of the over-oIScious agent, "and I am Just going around to give this fel low a piece of my mind on the matter." Probably this did not Increase the peace of mind of the party to whom It was given. Fine Quarters tor Birds. Colonel Hawkins has a large number of gaudily plumaged tropical birds, such as parra keets, parrots, cockatoos and doves, and a number of large birds and bitterns. ready to place on exhibition in the free museum in the City Hall. He Is anxious ly awaiting the arrival of eight show cases he ordered some time ago. In or der to begin arranging the birds in them. Four of these cases have glass Inclosed space 1x4x6 feet for large birds and groups, and will be crowded as full as possible to save room. In some of these water fowl and their young will be placed In "pools" of looking-glass, surrounded by water plants, which will produce a beautiful and novel effect. A special fa vorite with Colonel Hawkins Is "Kid Ma zama," or yo'ung mountain goat, secured by A. J. Capron in British Columbia. He admires It from Its sprouts of horns down to its little hoofs, and will have It so placed In the MaT.imas headquarters, ad joining the museum, that all visitors may get a view of Its graceful form and shag gy coat. "Grindstone Jikmt" in Need or Care. The county authorities or some charit able association should provide some ref uge for "Grindstone Jimmy." the decrepit old "Alsacer." who has been grinding knives, etc, about town lor a quarter of a century. He never was particularly bright, and could not talk either German or French, both of which are the lan' guages of his native country, and he cannot talk much English, either. He Is old and feeble In mind and body. His shoes are worn out. His grinding ma chine is broken and useless, but from force of habit he still goes' wheeling It about, and seeking for work which he is not able to do. Yesterday he was standing on Washington street, and a man brought a hatchet to be ground. The old man took It and said mechanical ly. "10 cents," and then stood there feel ing the edge of the hatchet with his old worn thumb. His wheel is Idle and use less, and he Is too far gone to understand this. He should be taken off the streets. Couktt Residents Mat Join Librart. Many citizens of Multnomah County are availing themselves of library privileges. Moors Gentlewoman Uzxl Wood Apparitkma, oldler, etc Shakespeare's great tragedy of "Mac beth" was strongly " presented last night at Cordray's Theater by John Griffith and his company, and there was a good audience present. Mr. Griffith was wen received and had to respond to a number of curtain recalls. The production is a new and original one, and although the action is built on original lines yet much is left to the individual perception' of the players. Mr. Griffith Is built on heroic lines to act Macbeth. He is in the prime of manhood, weighs 230 pounds, has mus cles on his upper arms like those, of iron; and stands about S feet 10 inches tall. As all the world knows, Macbeth was a famous Scotch wan lor. being a Thane of Glamls, Forfar County, In a- lovely valley called the Howe of Strathmore, and famous in minstrel ballad and story. The trend of the story is Celtic, and it is Interesting to know that Mr. Griffith's parents were Scotch. So. by tempera ment and lineage, he is well fitted to por tray Macbeth. He has played the Part for six months, with a good degree of artistic success. At the opening of the tragedy , Mr. Griffith's reading of Macbeth is that of a rough but brave warrior, ambitious, iU-at-eose, and Lacking that high purpose which spurs one to high deeds. He yearns for power, and aspires to the crown of Scot land worn by King Duncan. Miss Louise Ripley, who recently earned a name for herself by her excellent acting in "Pud d'nhead Wilson," is the Lady Macbeth, and she it Is who stirs the slumbering ambition in her husband's heart and be comes his evil genius. Miss Ripley's por? trayal of Lady Macbeth win compare favorably with that of any other actress who has played that part, in Portland, for a long time past. When her husband grows faint after he kills King Duncan. she sneers at his terror, and becomes contemptuous, masculine .end cynical as she finishes the work her craven hus band has begun. Mr. Griffith's work in the bmquet scene, where the ghost of Banquo haunts htm. was thriUlng, awe-inspiring and hair-raising. His strongest work Is in the last act. where he becomes physically brave, and a man again, as he has a fu rious hand-to-hand fight with Macduff (Warren Conlon) and falls dead, like a soldier. The scenery Is carefully repro duced from historical pictures, and Is handsome. The best electrical affects are in the fifth act, when the faces of several of Macbeth's victims flash on a wall, like the vision recorded in the book of Dinlel Mr. Griffith has a strong. weU-modulated voice, and his enunciation Is splended. His support is good. "Mac-t beth" will be the attraction at Cordray's Theater this evening, tomorrow and Sat urday evenings, with Saturday matinee. Fine Acta for the Benefit. April 15.-(To the Editor.) Most fruitgrowers will. I believe, read Mr. Benton KUlln's letter about the ever- I green blackberry with some surprise, as this berry is of such poor flavor and quality that It does not seem possible that It could ever be in demand in any form. And aside from its poor quality, Its habit of growth is such that It Is almost impossible to gather the fruit; the suggestion of a denim suit to wear does not fill the bill at all a complete suit of armor is necessary. I am most hoartlly In accord with the I Idea that we should grow and can up ! great quantities of blackberries, and not ' only them but all the other fruits that I are suitable for the purpose, because I this Willamette Valley is pre-eminently ! suited for that branch of the fruit in- dustry. But I feir that the canning of 1 an inferior fruit by an Inferior process I is not the best manner of procedure. To can fruit on the farm would be like going back to the old process of making butter In that way: it would mean in- ' numerable brands and utter lack of uni formity In quality, with consequent low prices. Let us proceed by growing the very best of fruit possible, and no country can grow better, and then establish can- j nerles on a commercial scale, and put out j n rmnt that will hrinff th h1phr prices and create a permanent and grow ing demand.
