-. Z'-WV vssy THE MORNING OREGONrAN, FRIDAY,- APRIL 10, 1903. 13 , V. - ADVANCE IN SALT Utah Company Puts Up Prices of Coarse Grades. STATEMENT TRUST'S AFFAIRS Mohnlr Pool at Dlllu to Be Bold To. day Decline In. - Quotations on Oregon Creamery Batter More Hops Are Selling. The eJt market la strong-, with prospects rood tor as advance In coarse pades In the near future. The firmness Is dne to the bis advance mad yesterday by the Inland Crystal Bait Company of Utah. Iu action Is explained la the following- dispatch: Salt Lak City. April 9. The Inland Crystal Bait Company, which controls the markets of Arizona. Nevada. Utah. Wyoming-, Idaho, Mon tana, and In part of those of Orexon and 'Washington, has. It is announced, advanced the price of coarse salt from 5 WW i ton. and of tanners" or brewers' ealt from 19 to ISO a. ton. Officials of the company stated today that the advance was almply to put the busi ness on a paying- basis, which It had not been for a long time -on account of the competition cf Independent firms. In connection with the excitement lately pre vailing In PaclSo Coast salt markets, the following- from the New Tork Journal of Com tserce of April 4 Is of Interest: The International Bait Company, better known as the Ealt Trait, which has been one of the principal disappointments In the line of Industrial combinations, has put forth a state ment, the first ever Issued. There are no fig "ores of earnings, and the .statement relates chiefly to the strain of the National Salt Company, which was placed In the hands of receivers In the Autumn of 1W2. and which has a very unprofitable contract with the United Ealt Company, which contract Is now the sub ject of a lawsuit. The statement Is lacking In the Information that stockholders most de sirethat Is. the earning capacity of the com pany. The statement Is as follows: "Tour company was organised In August. 1601. and within a tew months acquired ma jorities of the stocks of the National Salt Com pany and the Retsot Mining Company. A suffi cient amount 'of the securities of the Interna tional Salt Company was used for that pur pose, and also to provide 11,000.000 cash work ing capital. The balance of the securities re mained In Its treasury for future extension of Its business. The Iletsot Mining Company was Incorporated in New Tork Bute in 1S65. Iu business Is mining and dlstrbutng rock salt, for which purpose It owns and operates valua ble salt deposits In New Tork Bute, and has also a profitable plant and property In Louis iana. The National Bait Company, Incorpo rated In New Jersey in 1S09. was placed In the hands of receivers during September, 1S02. by order of the Court of Chancery or New Jersey. Its difficulties arose mainly from contracts which proved Impossible of fulfillment, en cumbering It with embarrassing litigation and greatly lmpalrnff ts resources. The most Important suit In which It Is at present Involved was brought by the National Bait Company to set aside as Illegal a contract Into which It had entered for the purchase of the United Ealt Company of Ohio. By the terms of this contract It was to pay to the stockholders of the United Salt Company for each share of that company's stock 1M shares of preferred stock of the National Salt Com pany, and In addition thereto a so-called "cer tificate of Indebtedness" for $104.25. payable In 10 semi-annual equal Installments. This cer tificate was In fact a guarantee of 7 per cent on the preferred and 10 per rent on the com, roon stock of the National Salt Company, so pld fpr the VnJted .Salt Company -for five years. The certificates so issued aggregate 11.055.000. Of this amount about 1220,000 has been paid to the American Truit Company of Cleveland, the trustee, leaving a balance doe of about $733,000. If this suit Is successful It will wipe out this Indebtedness, and will re tire t2.&00.000 of sow outstanding stock of the National Bait Company. The receivers say that they have been operating the New Tork property at a small profit, but have found It expedient to shut down the plants In Michigan Indefinitely. So much depends upon this out come of pending litigations that It Is impossible to predict at this time what this company may expect to receive from the National Ealt Com pany or what would eventually be done with that company. In March, 1102. your company acquired the entire capital stock (11.000,000) of the International Salt Company of Illinois. This company la essentially a distributing com pany, handling the products of the National Bait Company and Retsot Mining Company, and to some extent of other concerns covering the Middle West. It has a well-established business, which shows substantial Increase each )ear.t The success of your company de pends on the earnings of the Retsot Mining Company, the National Bait Company and the International Salt Company of Illinois. Relative to the con dition of the iron market, the Iron Trade Re view this week says: Quietness, even greater and more general than In the waltlnr period of the past nine months, has settled upon the pig iron market since the announcement of lower prices by Southern furnaces. Buyer agree that the market has now turned In them favor, and it will take time to demonstrate whether they will get the further reduction In price now expected. The establishing of a basis ct $1 a ton lower at the furnace In Iron tor the East ern market than for Central and Western shipments, is an announcement that. In the -opinion of Southern furnace men, sufficient iron can sow o proaucea at home to make im ports unnecessary, and Is a distinct bid for business which hss hitherto gone abroad by force of the domestic situation. There are furnace outside the Southern As sociation now quoting $17 at furnace for No. Z foundry, and Central Western buyer already argue that the .116.50 basis should apply to them as well as to the East. A situation is created in which competition between North ern and Southern producers will naturally be keener, and the former are now expected to let go readily of the business they hare had In a period in which Southern Irons have been higher than Northern in Central territory. An immediate result of the announcement of last week ha been to reduce the prices asked for shipments of foundry Iron in the eecond quarter, and In some cases they are now practically the same as for delivery through the second half of the year. Offerings of South' era gray forge have been made at f 19.S5. Pitts burg, for the last half, but without contracts as yet, Chicago reports 6000 tons of malleable and standard Bessemer sold on the basts of $21.73 for the former. The situation In steel making pig irons Is unchanged. Much more ha been done in these irons In recent weeks than In foundry and forge. In the matter of the Steel Corporation's con tracts for Bessemer Iron, an Interesting devel opment is the decision of certain valley fur nace companies to ship to the corporation only such Iron as Is made from corporation coke. Some of the merchant furnace, because of the coke shortare. have been compelled to buy In the market at high prices. The delivery of Iron on low-priced contracts only a fast as low-priced coke It available, will extend dellv erlea of Steel Corporation iron bought tor first quarter aa late a July, and In some cases August. The blast-furnace workers have voted against pressing the eight-hour day. but will demand an advance In wages May L The demand for finished material continues to contrast with ptg Iron. On the books of the Steel Corporation the tonnage ts over 3,400,000. Structural demand Is strong; but the strike of worker expected on May 1 promises serious derangement In architectural work and bridge work, and the effect of such a stoppage would be far-reaching. Faelflca Especially Affected by- the Announcement May Uave Bearing; oa Southern Pacific Case. I NEW TORK. April 8. Tb unexpected an- naancement. of the decision In the Northern Securities case today threw the stock market Into commotion, and rut a sudden end to a dull but prosperous upward course of prices. There hare been vague fears for soma time recently that the stock market would have to face a reverse In an unfavorable decision to the company In this case, but anxiety had ap parently subsided for the present, and It was dearly not one of those development which was expected during the Easter holidays. Early In the day the weight of apprehension wa In fact heaviest on the apathy In stocks, as wa manifested by the disinclination to leave com mitment of the short side open over the holi days. A steady demand to cover shorts had lifted price to the high level of the day at about 1 o'clock, at which time net gains In practically all of the principal stocks ran from 1 to 2 points. This disposition to cover shorts wa duo for the most part to the prospect that the bank would make a favorable statement of conditions on Saturday, while the ateck markets of the world are closed for the Easter holiday. The banks have already gained since Friday $741,000 on Ecb treasury operations, and they are estimated to have received from the Inte rior something over $1,000,000 In the same time. In view of this prospect, the firmness of call money today was rather Ignored, being attrib uted to the spedal demand to carry over the three holiday. Later In the day, after the market had been broken by the news of the Northern Securities difficulty, the money rate lowered to 10 per cent. Sterling exchange ad vanced several points and discounts rose In London, leaving the future course of our money market open to some question. A -violent re covery in raw copper In London led to large buying of Amalgamated. There were algna of distress among the short in Sugar, and there was a notable demand for the Fadflca, St, Paul and the United States Steel stock. All these thing helped to give tone to the early market. The collapse after the Northern Securities de cision became known waa correspondingly vio lent. Northern Securities Itself, after having sold at 106U on the curb, dropped to 1025, with a final rally to 103H. closing at 104 bid. Union Paclflo resisted the first decline, but was heavily sold afterward, la position being con sidered peculiarly affected by the decision by reason of tb Southern Padfle litigation. Fris co dropped Vi. reflecting the fear that the Rock Island deal would be prevented. Penn sylvania and New Tork Central were also heavily sold, the former touching 134. a new low level on the present movement. The whole market rallied substantially at the last on cov ering by shorts, and closed dun but steady. The notice of appeal In the Northern Securi ties case was dted as an argument to allay apprehension, but the sweeping character of the decision and the unanimity ct the court bad a discouraging effect on those who hoped for a reversal. Bonds weakened In sympathy with stock. Total sales, par value. $2,463,000. The stock market has been exceedingly nar row and wholly professional during the week. The fluctuations have been Irregular at times, but prices worked to a' higher level generally before the late break today. The approach of a three days holiday had the Inevitable effect of curtailing speculative operations. The pub lic myitis cation over the position and the plan of the Southern Pacific pool has been an additional repressive Influence. -The dissolution of the temporary injunction against the voting of the Union Pacific holdings of Southern Pa cific seems to have met the expectation of the speculative contingent, but that party seems to have failed entirely to take account of the obvious probability of an appeal of the case and a consequent suspension of the ques tloo at Issue. The Indefinite postponement of the annual meeting of the Southern Paclflo leave the present control undisturbed, and relieves the Immediate apprehension of the dis turbance which would .result from sn upset of that control. But the prospect of a long' drawn-out litigation holding In suspense far. reaching questions of right of ownership and control of stocks of railroads by competing railroad companies Is not viewed with equa nimity by holders of stocks. There Is some tear that the difficulty In the Northern Securities case may nave a bearing on a final decision in the Southern Paclfle case. and may also affect the status of many other holding by railroad companies acquired In the course of building up of a community of In terests In the railroad world. The disposition of the large pool holdings of Southern Paclfle stock offers so many possibilities a to Inspire caution on the market commitments. The term of the pool expires on Friday, and the general belief Is that It will be dissolved. The stimulating effect upon speculation which was hoped for from the seasonable relaxation of the money situation has been neutralised by these considerations. The easing condition of money ha been manifested in all the world's markets, and ha served to relieve the recent persistent pressure of liquidation, but has not entirely ended with It. A feature of the week's market has been the notable declines from pre vious sale prices In various dormant stocks. There was some active liquidation of United State Steel securities. Induced by the report of a decrease In the net earning for the past quarter of nearly $2,000,000 compared with the first quarter of last year. The corporation's new & per cent bonds reached a low-record price at S3& on the curb, but the extraordinary showing of earnings and the productive power contained In the annual exhibit of the company served aa a counteracting Influence, and Inside support wa also In evidence, which had the effect of restoring confidence and causing a rally. Another favoring Influence was the large In crease in gross earnings of the railroads for the fourth week In March, which reached from 30 to SO per cent for some of the leading sys tems of the country. The labor situation wa a rather disturbing element stllL especially the disputes In the anthracite region over the- In terpretation of some clauses of the strike com' mission's award, but the adjustment of the Wabash ware dispute and the eondlletorr at titude adopted by the atraetural Ironworkers had a reassuring effect. Amalgamated Copper nas oeen under pressure, supposed to be due to a reactionary tendency In the copper market- While the weight of the recent stock market depression baa been distinctly relieved, there is manifest hesitation about-embarking In com' mltmenta on the long side of the market. The relief of the Immediate situation In the money market has not ended the doubt about the adequacy of money supplies tor the needs of the coming Fall. Active dlacusslcn of the volume ot "nnsigested securities" In the mar ket, while showing all degrees ot mlsconcestlon and many conflicting opinions, even in the best informed and best-qualified quarters, ha had a marked influence In keeping alive a spirit ot caution ana xn confirming a conservative attt tude towards the stock market. The bond market has been dull and neglected and irregular In the movement of prices. United States 2s advanced H per cent, the 3s coupon H per cent, and the old 4s 1 per cent. The new 4s, registered, declined H per cent end the 4s, coupon. 1H per cent, a compared with the closing or last week. Aevr Vorlc Stock Market. STOCKS. -4- Atchlson do preferred ......
