CALIFORNIA STOCKS ON HAND Duly Enonch to Supply the Trade for Five Month Sale of e Mohair Tool mt Albany. The bean market Is flrra la view of th lim ited stocks on band. "It Is estimated that the eupply In California, la sufficient for only Ore month, and In Mtcblran then It a heavy aortas. Tha trad cinralar of 'a leadlnf; San franclsco handle; of beans says: After a very careful Investigation, w snbmlt here with to the bean trade and those generally Interested, an estimate of stocks of beans on band In the State of California, March 2. 1803. The valuable report of the Merchants Ex change or Ban Francisco. Issued December 1. 1002; and reports showing taxable beans' In vrarebouses In the city and county -of San Francisco, on hand March 2. 1003. and reports from Connty Assessors In the bean-growing sections of the state, and our extensive ware bouse connections, are the basis from which we make our deductions. The report Issued by the Merchants' Exchange credits the State ot Cali fornia with 7S2.S74 sacks of various kinds ot beans on band December 1, 1102. There baa been received at San Francisco since Decem ber 1 S33.S77 sacks. The amount of taxable beans reported on hand in San Francisco warehouses March 2. 1903, was 154,312 sacks. The difference be tween this amount and the amount on hand December 1. and receipts of beans from Decem ber 1 to March 1. is the amount of beans that has been shipped out of or consumed In San Francisco from December 1. 1902, to March 1. 1803. which is 181.5C5 sacks. Shlmpents from December 1. J802. to March 2, 1103. out of Sacramento, Marysville. Stockton. Watsonvllle. San Luis Obispo. Santa Barbara and Ventura polnta are estimated at 800 cars, or about 120,000 sacks. Total shipments ot all kinds Mt beans since December 1. 1902. to March 2. 1903, 301.5C5 sacks; leaving on hand March 2, 1903, In the Bute of California, 421. 300 sacks of all kinds ot beans, segregated as follows: Sacks. Umss 210.000 Larpe and smalt whites -- 136,018 rinks 44.293 Bayos 25.997 Blarkeyrs ...... 30.000 Miscellaneous 5,000 Total 451.309 Trade the past three months for beans has been very heavy, most all points In the United States drawing on California for supplies. This Is due to the shortage of the Michigan and New Tork crops. Michigan dealers claim there are only 600 cars In the state, against the usual supply at this time of the year, of about 2000 cars. The largest trade that California has Is from March to November. If the de mand during the above period Is as good as It has been the past three months, there Is not now on hand tire months' supply. There waa much liquida tion of the May option. Influenced largely by the poor showing ot the cash article, and there was also much changing from May to July. Later In the day there waa a little better de mand for the near-by months, but the close was easy, with May tie lower, at 43c Oats opened with some show of strength on local buying, due to the unfavorable weather, but commission houses had plenty for sale and the market became easier, being aided In the downward course by the action ot other grains. The cash business was small and unimportant. May closed. H8!4c lower, at 33833X6. Provisions were dull, with commission-house selling producing general weakness. Cur rency Movement." NEW TORK. A mil 3. There was another heavy selling movement In the stock market this morning, -which apparently overreachea the mark, lodging from the scramble of shorts to cover during the last hour, when the supply of stocks had become scarce. This led to a lively rally and a general recovery of prices to above last night's level. The rally was not well held, however, owing to the evi dence ot renewed realising for the satisfaction of the mora urgent demand from shorts. As a result, the closing was easy and below the top level ot the rally. The appreciable relax ation of the tension In the money market and a belief that the. factors at work would bring till further relief next week -were the domi nant Influences In the rally. The turning selling was due to the bad effect of a violent break in Southern Paclfle to S5U. which aroused fears for the position' ot the pooL The apparently endless stream ot liquida tion In Pennsylvania "was also turned into the market afresh, carrying the price to a new level on the movement, at 133. The Friday re quirements in the money market kept up the call money rate early In the day. and there were appearances to warrant the assumption that th itnk, wn itinmlnr an admonltorr attitude toward the speculative pools In a way which might account tor some ot the selling. The extreme point which has been reached In the personal antipathy growing out of the Southern Pacific quarrel gtvea color to the report that the weapons employed extend to the 'Influencing of the supply ot financial resources employed by the pool la the stock market. The fact that the Southern PaclDo books closed tonight for the annual meeting Indicates the closing ot the struggle tor .representation at that meeting. The demand for the stock Is likely to be affected as a consequence. Its movement became very feverish. In the dealings during the rally In the market, and on Its rise to BOH. there were several wide price changes. A rumor found currency at the same time that a prominent financier whose services have been called upon to settle more than one threatened fnncl contest had been Induced to adjust the differences among the Southern Paclfls shareholders. The feverish collspse in" the stock sufflclently Indicated the skepticism with which this rumor was received In the early decline. Amalgamated Copper weakened on the slump In the London ooDoer market and a. further offering down ot the metal on the local metal exchange Colorado Fuel extended its recent decline. The weakness ot Sugar was attrib uted to unsettled trade conditions. The nrellmtnarr estimate of the week's cur rency movement Indicates a small gain on bal ance from the Interior, but the loss to the Sub- treasury of 11.567.000 and a shipment ot 3250,. 000 In cold to Canada promises to bring the net decrease In cash to over 31.500,000. The calling ot loans Incident to the April 1 settle ment will greatly contuse the showing ot that Item. The confidence that the usual season able factors are at work for the replenishment of the local money market, however, over shadows the Influence ot the Immediate show ing of the banks. Effect of Floods at Mississippi Val ley Points The Industrie Are Active. NEW TORK .Airil 1 R G. Dun's weekly review ot trada tomorrow will say: Another week of good, weather has brought out a large volum of business, many manu facturers receiving urgent requests tor Imme diate shipments. Floods have caused serious losses at a few points on th Mississippi, and traffic was interrupted oa railway In that vi cinity, but on th wool th freight situation Is more satisfactory than at any previous tlfce this year. Quicker transportation has relieved the. fuel pressure, and (he Industrial situation would be unprecedentedly favorable were It not for the prevalence ot labor dispute. Railway earnings In March Increased 13 per cent over last year, and 21.1 per cent as compared -with 190L - ' During tb month of March, prices ot com modities, as measured by Dun's index number, declined to $99,267. aa -compared with $101,067. This decrease is only seasonable, and la about the asm as occurred in th corresponding pe riod last year. Less Interruption from fuel scarcity and traf fic congestion has produced a most desirable 'condition ot activity la all departments of the Iron and steel Industry, but th structural workers striae threatens to restrict consump tion and provide th only menacing factor. Textile manufacturing conditions are unset tled by strikes, and the. future course of prices, as well as the general situation, must depend largely upon this factor. Throughout the cot ton Industry, there 1 a disposition to await developments. Only a very light supplement ary demand is coming toward for men's wear woolen and worsteds, and most new orders are for filling out sample business. Thes 'Is much complaint ot delayed deliveries In this line, and cancellations are again a feature. In creased firmness is recorded in "the' market for footwear, particularly aa to men's kid shoes. Leather is firm, but comparatively quiet. Failures this week la th United SUtes are 173. against 214 last week. 220 la the preced ing week and 167 ia the corresponding week last year, and In Canada this week 18. against 28 last week. 20 In the preceding week and 22 last year. RETAIL TRADE EXPANDING. Jobbers Also Ileport an Increase In Business. NEW TORK. April 3. Braditreet's tomorrow will say: Retail trad Is expandlng.-favored by Spring like weather, and jobbers report reorder from retailers Increasing, -while collections show Im provement. Soma price revisions sre to be noted, particularly In coal, pig Iron, copper, coffee and sugar on the Atlantic seaboard Flour Is slightly higher on the excellent ex port business. The Industries, particularly Iron and steel and lumber, are actlv the country over. The Spring crop of strike is equal to the average, though most 6t them have appeared a trifle earlier, particularly in the building trades. The activity la lumber Is a notable feature Just now, the only complaint being not enough de liver! as to meet the current demand. Shoe manufacturing 1 In rather better shape than previously. The pressure ot foreign iron at Eastern seaboard markets Is the reason as signed for the cut of $1 per ton in Southern foundry grades, and for the sympathetic weak ening ot SOc, per ton In other kinds ot pig iron at Eastern markets. Anthracite coal has experienced the usual Spring cut of 6O0 per ton. but the level Is still 40c per ton higher than a year ago at this time, showing that the consumer In this line has had to pay the expense ot last year's great strike Wheat.- including flour, export for the week ending April 2 aggregat 3,109,974 bushels, against 2,401.987 bushels last week. 4.448.917 bushels In this week a year ago. and 4,693.693 in 1901. Wheat exports since July 1 .aggregate 173.579.4S9 bushels, against 193,984,623 bushel last' sasor and 1S5.666.39L bushels in 1900.
