THE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, 1903. i 13 SOLD UPONTOLD PACK Salmon Combine Shows First Signs of Weakness. THE WITHDRAWAL OF CHUMS XInloi, Spot and Futures, Still Of fered on the Cut Basis aiore Ex- . port Demand for Primes Hops Are Firm. NEW YORK, Jan. 9. Special.) Tho fea ture In cheap salmon Is the association's tem porary -withdrawal of chums. No explanation is given, and the trade Impression Is that It Is sold up on 1002 pack and docs not core to book more orders for futures. The feeling Is that the association has shown weakness. Pinks, both spot and futures, still offer. The Fidalgo Island Packing Company offers on the basis of COc laid down hero for 1902 pack, and Its agents report sales covering 9000 cases, mostly for Southern Jobbing account. Other Interests aro reported offering on the same basis. The asso ciation's agents report slower confirmations of orders on pink futures at 60o f. o. b. basis. Spot pink offers at C570c as to holder. A lit tle movement In fancy chlnook fish Is reported at $1 GO for talis, $1 67 for flat, and 05c for halves. Hed Alaska Is quiet. Lima beans closed firm and unchanged. More export demand Is noted for prunes, and several good-sized lots of 70-SOs and S0-90s In 3-pound boxes wero sol dat 4c for tho first. and 4o for tho latter. Two cars of 40s to 00s changed hands at Clio for tho three sizes. The Jobbing demand continues light, but" sellers' orders are firm. Oregon fruit Is very firm. A email lot of 20-30s were sold at 9&c In 25-pound boxes. Some inquiry for export In S0-40s and 40-50s is reported, and negotiations are on for the purchase of a round lot. Spot hops closed firm. The market shows a shade more Inquiry from brewers, and a few email lots of choice Pacifies were moved at full values. State advices report a moderate demand, with prices ruling firm. Foreign ca Dies note a stronger market In Germany. Rust in Asparngns. California mall advices say of asparagus: If Immediate measures arc not token to stop the ravages of rust in the asparagus fields around Mllpltas tho entire asparagus Industry of the state will bo destroyed. Horticulturist A. V. Steubenrasch, of the State University, has been examining the disease for several days, and reports that 150 acres aro already doomed, and that all the surrounding region, comprising some 500 acres, is threatened. This one section produced 5100,000 -worth of aspara gus last year. The industry had to be given "up In tho East on account of this destructive fungus, and as the disease has a hold in Cali fornia tho university experts may not be able to stay Its ravages. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain, Flour, Feed. Etc. The Improvement In the Eastern and foreign wheat markets was reflected by a firmer tono to wheat In the local trade. NEW TORKj Jan. 29. Tho tone of today's stock market was altogether professional. Tradinc was somewhat In excess of the pre vious day, but was limited for the, most part to the leading issues. A number or ravoraoio features, such as the increased ease of sterling exchange and promise of an amicable solution of the .Venezuelan situation, w.ere ignored, as also were a number of excellent railroad re turns. St. Paul, however, was not Included in this latter class, that road snowing a decrease of over 543,000 net for December. In point of activity and general interest, su Paul was tho feature of tho early session. Tho stock opened moderately strong In anticipation of favorable action by the directors respecting the proposed increase of stock. Following an advance of over a point, brokers representing important Interests sold freely, and the stock closed with a fractional loss. Announcement that nothing except routine business had been transacted at the board meeting did not como. out until after the close of the market- Other early features of Interest were Pennsylvania, In which there was extensive trading, the St. Louis & San Francisco Issues, Delaware & Hudson and Amalgamated Copper. Later, Mis souri Pacific, Erles and some other leading rail way shares developed Increased firmness. The movement In the Erie issues In the aft ernoon attracted considerable attention, and ap peared to be based on a revival of "combina tions" reports which wero current a fortnight ago. Erie common on heavy trading made a net gain of , whllo the first and second pre ferred advanced 1 and 2 points respectively. In tho Industrials, offerings of General Elec tric were freely absorbed, with a net gain of Si points, the stock closing at the highest fig ure. Improvement was shown by United States Realty, Republic Iron & Steel, United States Leather, and some of the minor Issues. What was believed to be pool manipulation was shown In the course of some stocks and the concurrent upward movement In- Pennsylvania and the Wabash issues gave rise to renewal of the reports of a settlement of the difficulties between the Interests controlling those proper ties. Aside from the strength of Erles and the weakness of St. Paul there were no noteworthy features In the late session. Trading continues narrow, and operations for London account were email and of an arbitrage character. The closing was Irregular and dull, Foreign exchange continued Inactive. The supply of remittances was rather better than usual, but the inquiry was not at all urgent.' Tho market appears to have gone so far below tho gold export level as to render the use of metal remittances improbable. The situation Is still modified, however, by several conflict ing features, whfch may develop Interesting complications almost any day, although It is generally believed that no accumulation of bills will be attempted by the Government be fore the final negotiations for the transfer of tho Panama canal property havo been com pleted. Tho railroad bond market was moderately actlvo, and showed a good distribution of deal lngs, though the movement was uncertain. To tal sales, par value, 52,515,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. CLOSING STOCK LIST. o STOCKS. Chicago Monopolists Allege Inter state Commerce Shields Them. CHICAGO, Jan, S3. Tha Indiana coal men, against whom indictments were re turned by the special Grand Jury, have been unable to agree -with State's Attor ney Denocn as to (a statement of facts which was scheduleyl for presentation to the court today. The operators win now be asked to give bonds so that their cases may come up for trial by Jury In the usual way. It was expected . that an agreement could be arrived at and that the personal indictment there would be dismissed. The state, it is said, desired the indicted coal men to admit violation of the Illinois statutes and to rely for their defense upon the unconstitutionality of the laws. The operators declare their transactions came within the scope Of the Interstate commerce laws and not within the Illinois statutes. ALL READING MIXES RUN. Coal Roads Take Steps to Prevent Cornering of Supply. PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 29. The Phila delphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company had all hut one of Its active collieries In operation yesterday, and today the full auota of 32 collieries is being' worked. The output averages from 1200 to 1400 tons dally. , General Manager Anderson is beginning to take ah' optimistic view of the situation and predicts that a redaction from the present high prices asked by the inde pendent operators is bound to com very soon. It is stated on good authority that the railroads are determined to break up tho speculative feature of the anthracite busi ness and the holding of coal in transit by speculators, with the possible view of keeping up the high prices. It is now ai most a dally occurrence for tho railroads to place an embargo on some Bhipper, who has kept loaded-cars on the tracks beyond reasonable; time, and wnenevor sucn occasion arises tho offending speculator is denied cars until the coat already In cars has been unloaded.
