THE MORNING OREGONIAN, MONDAY. JANUARY 19, 1903, 11 WHEAT GOES HIGHER Market Advancing Under De mand From Australia. AN ORDER RECEIVED FOR CLUB Crop Prospects in Argentina and Elsewhere Itcvleiv of the Pant IVeelc In Locul MnrUeis Other Murlcct Xewa. Under continued Inquiry from Australia the Vheat market Is slowly but steadily climbing. Prices are firm at the moment, club betas worth 73c and bluestem S2c for exporting- pur poses. One ehlpper who Is buying lor Austra lian account Is credited with paying an ad vance over these figures, and millers generally have to pay about 2c above export values In order to get wheat to keep their mills running. No new business Is being worked for the United Kingdom, ruling prlcca In the Northwest being prohibitive. A somewhat uncertain factor of the future Australian trade Is the possibility of Importers there buying In Argentina. Here tofore the Australians would not touch the South American wheat, any more than they would buy club wheat here, taking only our bluestem. A change has evidently come over their views, aB the Euphrosyne, Just chartered to load wheat for Australia, will take a part cargo of club. If they show a wlllliurness to take tho cheaper grade of Pacific Coast wheat, there Is reason to fear that they may be con verted to trying Argentine grain. Crop reports from Argentina continue favor able, and the exportable surplus Is expected to amount to at least 75.000.000 bushels and pos sibly SO.000,000. "What effect this largo supply will hare on the world's markets has not yet become, apparent, but It seems reasonably sure that It will bo decidedly bearish. Inasmuch as that country shipped but 19.44S.000 bushels last year. 31.4SS.000 bushela In 1001 and 70.000,000 bushels In 1000. As yet, however, the pros pect of an enormous Argentine surplus has caused no selling pressure of American wheat, and operators In this country are still Inclined to take tho bullish side, believing that the de mand on America for choice dry wheat for mixing with the rather poor "Western, Europe stock will necessarily continue throughout the season. Reports from other foreign countries show no material change in tho grain situation. In nearly all parts of Europe, with the excep tion of portions of Russia, the crops are Win tering well and give satisfactory promise. In this country the various state reports and the Government weather report show Winter wheat to be In line condition, although growing some what too rapidly under the fine weather. What injury Is reported Is In scattered districts and not sufficient to give the crop alarmist a chance to make bis appearance. The local market for other cereals has ruled Quiet through tho week. Oats have been par-, ticularly dull, and the tendency Is toward a lower level. Barley Is not active. Hops are slower, after a period of activity following the opening of the new year. Tha sales lately made show that full values arc being maintained. Twenty-seven cents has been offered at Valley points. The produco trade was not entirely satisfac tory throughout the week, the unsteady de mand being attributed to tho variable weather. The market is sufficiently stocked with all green stuff proper at this season. Saturday's eurplus included a car of cabbage, celery and cauliflower from Southern California. The sweet potatoes now coming up are superior to those received earlier in the season. A car of bananas arrived Sunday. Poultry cleaned up In a manner satisfactory to all concerned. Fresh eggs are not moving off so well at 32c and most of the trade have dropped to 30c Butter Is Arm for the fancy grades, and a. general advance will undoubtedly be made at the opening of the week. Grocerj' Jobbers report an Improvement in their business. The recent decline in sugar was looked upon as a reaction from the pre vious marked advances coupled with an easier feeling in raw sugar. The position statistically remains as strong as ever; the crop will fall over 1,500,000 tons short, and the Increase in consumption. If It equals mat of last year, will bo a very bullish faotor. Spices of all kinds are firm, both locally and at primary markets. The coffee market Is unchanged lo cally but lower In the East, owing to tho large Brazilian crop. Bice Is firm, but unchanged. THIS YEAR'S TOMATO PACK Total Output of OtlW,S12 Cases "Was the Largest 0n Record. New York Times. , The 23d annual report of the tcmato pack of the United States and Canada estimates the total output as the largest on record and more than double the short pack of 1S01. The figures for the pack of 1902 were gathered by the American Grocer, which publication based its esti mate on signed returns received from the great majority of packers In the United States. Never before In the history vras such an extensive acreage put out aa this year, which was said to be due to the strong statistical position of canned tomatoes. In the three years from 1809-1901 the total pack was short "of requirements, with the result that for the first time In a quar ter of a century stocks were completely exhausted. Thl3 resulted In every fac tory being worked to Its fullest capacity this year, tho output being consumed as fast as it was available until late In August- The pack by states was led by Maryland, which turned out 4.514.3S2 cases of two dozen cans each, followed by Indiana, wlftt an output of 992.6S6 cases. New Jersey's output which was third in the list was 739,843 cases, while New York, which stood ninth, packed 107,423 cases. "Wisconsin was at the bottom of the list with an out put of 6000 casea The total output for the country was 9,282,812 cases, as against 4,208,221 cases In 1901. Tho total Canadian output was 212,000 cases. AT THE HOTELS. THE PORTLAND. F W "Wood. Dayton V C Rlcker, do E E Evans & wf, Vancouver. B C Ed W Mueller. Sumptr fhll J Brady.
