THE MOENItfG OKEGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 193. 13 BUYING IS CHECKED Eastern Orders for Oregon Hops Are Withdrawn MANY TRANSACTIONS OF LATE rliocnl Dealers SpecnlatlxiR Recent Strength Due to Attempt to Cover Short Contractu Some Inaulrj- From London. The hop market lw been verj' active in the past 10 days with transactions aggregating 2500 bales. The salos "were made at from 24i to 20?i cents. All the local dealers par ticipated in th buying. There has been more or less speculation also, some of the dealers buying without orders. The rece nt firmness of the market is 'said to be due to efforts to cover short contracts. More than one trader has found himself in a tight place and has been compelled to buy right and left- Added to this were a number of good orders from the East which kept the ball rolling. Yesterday a number of Eastern or ders were cancelled and the result is that the market Is left in an uncertain and wavering condition. London is not buying, so far as can be learned, though some inquiries are being mado on tho other side. To make the recent "air.s permanent, the Englishmen must come into the market with bona fide orders. Of tho way the situation Is viewed in the East, the New York Journal of Commerco of January 7 says: Telegraphic advices received from the Coast reported firm markets, with no new business of Importance transacted. Some dealers were reported as buyers on tho - basis of 25c for choice Oregons, but there were no sewers, growers generally being Indifferent and hold ing for an advance. Reports from California also reported growers as holding firm. It was learned that a prominent bear operator who last fall sold 3000 bales of prime Oregon hops for January delivery at 20c has bought in his contract, paying 25c Offerings of'state hops continued small, especially of desirable grades, and prices -were unchanged and firm. The local market was quiet, but reflecting tho firmness of primal points, prices were well maintained: in fact, some dealers were talking slightly higher prices for Paciflcs. No changes were reported in tho foreign markets. The Watervllle Times of January 0 says of hops: There has been more celling during the last few days than before for some time. The top price for the grade of goods offering seems to be 31c, with the majority going at 20c. The holders of tho largest and best lots of course are not tempted by these prices and probably in many cases 35c would not buy their growths. Among late sales about Madison, Solsvllle and Brookfleld are 22 bales at 30c. 14 at 29&C, 13 at 30c, nine at 31c and three at 2Gc l TTTTXTO TV 01111? 4 HT Oregon Frnit Steady Export Inquiry I Limited. NEW YORK, Jan. 13. (Special.) Prunes 'Ehow little Jobbing movement, but some good ' sized lots have been picked up by speculators and tho tone is nrmer, though not quotably higher. Business today .covered eight carloads chiefly 40-50s, EO-COs and C0-7Os in 25-pound boxes. Prlcos paid were 7Uc for 40s, O&c for 00s and 4 for 60s. Purchases amounting to three carloads were made from a Philadelphia house on private terms. A few lots still offer here at above values and negotiations are pend ing looking tb their purchase. The export in quiry is limited, but cables report strong roar- ltets abroad. Oregon prunes are steady with : holders quoting 7c to 7Uc on 30-40s, CYfcc on 4Q-50s and 5c on 50-C0s. Today's receipts rom all sources were G000 boxes for domestic -and 7000 boxes for export. Considerable -business was reported -In sock- eye salmon" and halves for shipment from Se attle per Luckenbeck due to leave the last of the month. The salmon Is coming here and the prices paid are reported as equivalent to I' $1,30 on tails and 90 on halves laid down here. Spot is quiet. Beans are firm, but little is doing. California Orange Outlook. Late advices from Los Angeles say of - the California orange outlook: According to present Indications there will be considerably more citrus fruits shipped out of Southern - California this year than last. The lemon crop is lighter but the shortage will be more than off- net by the additional output of oranges. The season has been exceptionally favorable for good orange growing and there have been no serious frosts to damage the crop. The pick' lng is now well Under way. Up to last week about 1800 carloads of oranges had been shipped East from Los An- ; geles and vicinity, and 1200 carloads from points north of Tehachapl. The season's output from bouthern California is expected to be from 22.000 to 24,000 carloads. Ncvr York Hop Market. NEW YORK, Jan. 13. (Special.) Little movement Is noted In hops, but reflecting the strong advices from the Coast for Pacifies, prices wero advanced lc per pound spot. Ger man grades are higher, dealers quoting a range lot from 40c to 50c The advance in prices in Germany since the rise began has been equlv alent to 5c per pound. Some local importers I bad German hops purchased prior to the rise and they have been sellers below tho parity of German values. Wires from up state re port stocks In country dealers' hands as 7000 bales. Prices rang from 30c to 35c Value of the Cable. The Pacific cable is working a revolution In. the handling of perishable goods. Hereto- ffpre mall orders were compelled to calcu late ahead for 15 to 20 days. Now they can 1 cable for such goods Just before the steamer I sails. On January 8 cables from Honolulu were received at San Francisco for Oysters. I fruits and other perishable goods, which were shipped on the Sonoma, which sailed that I evening. Refined Sugar Advances. NEW YORK, Jan. 13. All grades of re lined Bugar were advanced 10 points today. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain. -"Iour, Feed. Etc. The stock market made a further reaction today, and vas heavy or weak during most of the session, but made some recover" during the last hour, and closed Irregular. The heaviness of the market had no better explanation than yesterday. Money advanced from 4Va per cent at the opening to 5 per cent, but no difficulty was ex perienced In getting it, and little attention seemed to be paid to the money situation by the operators in stock. This was not true, however, of the foreign exchange market, and the anxiety 'felt in regard to that development waa due. of course, to the probable effect on money. Sterling was In qulto strong demand today In spite of yesterday's heavy engage ments of grain for export, and good hopes Of a continuance of this outgo. London opera tions In stocks here wero not on a large scale, and did not Influence exchange. It Is believed that some bills are about maturing that repre sent borrowings abroad for New York account during the money stringency here last month. There is a likelihood, also, that there Is some accumulation of exchange to provide payment for French rentes, for which there is said to be somo present demand, on account of the American insurance companies. The effect in Borlln yesterday of tho fore shadowing of a German loan was duplicated in London today by tho expectation of an early Income of a Transvaal loan. These govern ment operations are probably the true explana tion of the hardening of foreign money rates and it is believed that our obligations to for eign money centers are still sufficient to permit them to draw gold from us in caso of need. This prospect would have a natural tendency to check wholesale commitments in specula tion for a rise In New York. But yesterday's disappointing response from the general public to last week's considerable and inviting rise served to admonish the managers of the ad vance that Httlo was to bo hoped for yet from the public In the way of absorbing securities which still remained In the hands ot syndi cates and promoters. Renewed strength In Erie and St. Paul this morning and support ot Reading seemed to be designed to reassure speculative sentiment, but when tl was perceived that advantage was being taken of this sustaining influence to ef fect large selling ot Rock Island the selling was renewed throughout the list, and there was no Important recovery until tho last hour. when Manhattan was lifted 2 points over last night, and the race was run up again to the top level of tho morning. Contributory causes to the heaviness were the steps taken In Con gress to investigate the coal supply, fears of damage to earnings of railroads by snow block ades, and broad Intimations that no Imme diate dividends are to be expected on Colorado Fuel. Practically all the leading stocks were a point or mere below last night at one time, and not all of them fully recovered on the late rally. Bonds were moderately active but were Ir regular. Total sales, par value, $2,540,000. United States 4s and 5s advanced per cent, while the 3s, coupon, declined H and the new 4s, coupon, i per cent on the last call. Connecticut Court Deflnes Matter tor Fire Insurance Companies. NEW HAVEN. Conn.. Jan. 13. The Su preme Judicial Court has sent down an Important decision denning; trie manner in which fire insurance companies should be pro-rated when the insurance Is cov ered partly by blanket and partly by spe cine policies and the loss la partial. The decision covers a point not hitherto de termlned, and is of unusual Interest to lawyers and insurance men. The decision is made in the case of Adam Schamelzle vs. the Lancashire and other insurance companies. Schamelzle is a technical plaintiff. His brewery was burned down. It was Insured by these 34 comnanlee for JCO.O00. Thirty-one compa nies had blanket policies and three had specific policies, tho latter amounting: to $5000. The total loss was about $42,000, The specmc policies covered tne same property as the blanket policies, bit the sums were distributed to separate items, such as stock, machinery an'd buildings. The Supremo Court finds that the total amount of blanket insurance should be estimated on each item, less the amount subtracted to meet the Ios3 on any other item, and that each blanket policy shall bear the amount of its pro-rata deter mined on tnis basis, xnis gives a great advantage to tne specitlc insurers, who pay a much smaller sum than would be the case If the distribution. were made pro rata on tne pasis 01 me duik loss.
