A. STOREY. Sheriff of Multnomah County. Portland. Or., December 22, 1S02. FILIPINO STUDENT AT YALE Ee Is Tlicre to Stndy La-rr Snys His People Like the American. New York Sun. "How did you happen to come to Yale?' was asked of Salvatoro Saragoza, the young Filipino who arrived at the unl vcrslty a few years ago to study law. "Governor Taft told my brother-in-law that I should aomo here to study English, so I decided to come," answered the young man. "Governor Taft Is very much loved by the Filipinos. Of course, there are exceptions, but many of them love him, The Filipinos love the Americans, espe clally the educated Filipinos." Saragoza is a highly educated Filipino of pleasing manner, and although his Eng lish is somewhat broken he speaks so that he is easily understood.. He comes from one of the leading families of Manila. About seven yearB ago his father died leavlnpr three sons and three daughters. One of the daughters studied mecucine in Manila, and another took an academic course in the college there. The former, though, was obliged to give op her studies because, under Spanish rule, It was made very uncomfortable for a girl to try to study medicine. In reference to tnat aara goza said: "In theory it was all right for my sis ter to study medlclno, but In reality the Spanish people do everything to make It hard for women to study, so that it be comes impossible to go on." The young man left home early this Fall. He arrived In New Haven less than a week ago. Saragoza Is 20, and a graduate of the college of Santo Tomas, In Manila. His degree qualifies him to practice law In the Islands, but as men are not allowed to practice law there until 23 he thought he would come to America to spend the in tervening time. He hopes to Improve his English Tvhlle here, to become accustomed to American ways of doing things, and to gain some knowledge of American law to help him when he gets back to his own country. Since his arrival In town the young Fili pino has made a good many friends, and the Yale boys have gone out of their way to make him feel at home. His family lias never been antagonistic to Americans, and it did not participate In the Spanish War! He said he did not know from actual experience anything about so-called cruel ties of American soldiers. In fact he had only praise for Americans in as far as he had any personal knowledge. 83 THfc PALATIAL OREGDNIAN Xot j. dark office in the building absolately fireproof.; electric llglita and artesian water; perfect sanita tion anti thorough- -ventilation.
