Onions SIqW Sale With o Shipping Outlet at Present FigTHrcn on the Country's .'.-Crop. The potato market Is weaker, ar.d commission men and shippers look for a decline In the near ..r. Th trouble Is with the California market, which Is oversurplted. Many of the potatoes on hand there arc poor keepers, ana the 'effort to keep them-movlng has resulted jn depressing price. In 'view of the decline In the California market, shipments from Fort land will probably ease up. Best Burbanks are quotable here at C070c per cental, and ordinary grades at DOSGOc There Is little or no sale for the poorer varieties. Onions are slow sale, with the market heav ily supplied, and no present shipping outlet for the Oregon product. California buyers are not expected to be In the field before February. Prices now are higher here than anywhere else. According to the report of the American Agri culturist, tho commercial crop of onions this -year is approximately 3.800,000 bushels, as compared with 3.000,000 bushels a year ago, and 4,000,000 bushels two years ago. Ralna In the West are largely responsible for the fact that a much larger quantity was not pro duced. The acreage is placed at 12.750 acres In the states covering the commercial onion growing belt north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi River, against 11,000 acres In 1901 and 12,050 acres In 1829. Tho authority named points out that against the figures last Indi cated the Federal census returns reported the total area 24.2S2 acres, stating that the dis crepancy Is seeming, not real. The Federal census returns include the area on every farm, no matter how Insignificant, and, while this serves to swell tho totals greatly, It does not bear on the commercial crop of onions. EASTERX HOP MARKET. Total Rxports for the Wccic 2500 Bales Prunes Arc Stronp. NEW YORK, Dec. 5. (Special.) Wires from state dealers report the market firm on heps, but quiet. Tho export movement Is fair, total shipments for the week reaching 2500 bales. The Imports here have been larger, numbering 1100 bales. Last cables report steady to firm, markets. Sales on spot Pacifies were reported at the close up to 32c for choice grades. State choice .sold at 37c. Coast wires reporting, stronger views on prunes added somewhat to the tone here, and While no higher values are quoted, the market Is strong on large sires, no shading" being pos sible. On 40-OOb. offers are freely made at 7c with no sellers. On lots of 50-30s, 6c can be done, and 5e on G0-70s. Any surplus over jobbers requirements on these sizes are taken by exporters at spot values. The sires 70-100s, Inclusive, are In better supply and a shade easier, with sales notfd at 4c on 70-80s, and 4" on SO-DOr. Receipts of all sizes today In cluded 10, GOO boxes for domestic, and 43,000 boxes for export. For Oregon prunes, up to 7lc Is quoted on 30-40s, but there are still offerings at 7Jtc Slzs 40-C0o are held- firm at Cjc Today's cable from Hamburg reported fruit arriving there slowly and passing Into consumption channels under light supplies. Fresno wires noting a scarcity of choice seed ed raisins caused an advanco to 8Uc here on local seeded in 1-pound cartons. Lima beans declined 2c on spot, with last sale reported at $3 02 per bushel. The Coast w4res offerings at $4 20 per cental. The movement In salmon is -fair for Jobbing lots, with standard brands held firmly at ?1 10 cfl 12V4 for red Alaska talis. . Lower grades offer at $1 05. Butter, ESK". Poultry Etc. Poultry is looking somewhat better, though prices are not yet any higher. There is .no change in eggs. The various restrictive Influences which recently have brought down the volume -of activity In the market had an addition today in the stormy weather, ine attendance of brokers at the board was mea ger, and the small number of room traders had the. market much to themselves, as they were almost isolated by the cutting off of wire communication with the outside world. As a consequence, the net results of the day s trad ing were extremely small. The selling by room traders during tho early part of the day made some considerable In roads upon prices, but in the absence of out- j - 1 rl.lnc tn rmnln Un- covered overnight, they rebought the stocks .4i4tc; lacicry prices i i EOid early, causing a general recovery. They market was really without significance, so far as the sentiment of tho day was manifest, the anxiety over the future of the money mar ket was still evident. The forecast of the weekly bank statement fully Justified this feel lng. The banks have apparently lost nearly" 7,000.000 from their cash reserves during the week. It will be remembered that last week's loss was understated in the bank statement by nearly $2,000,000 by reason of the working of the average system of computation. Tho movement ot currency has been in favor of the Interior again to the extent of nearly $900,000, Including the deposits at the Subtreasury for telegraphic transfer to the Interior. The bal ance of the loss Is made up of customs and internal revenue payments anil the $ 1,000,000 exported to South America. There is the usual obscurity regarding the changes In the loan Item of the banks. There has been nothing tn the stock, market to indicate extensive liquida tion of loana. Tension in the time money market has ap preciably grown during the week, but call loan Vegetables. Fruit. Etc. With the market liberally supplied, the de mand was lighter than on the preceding day. MINNEAPOLIS. Dec. 5. (Special.) The Commercial West's London wheat review says: Business has been on a limited scale, but quite in accordance with the usual course "pur sued by the cargo market, when a. material ad vance takes place in American options. There Is no question that these are still tho dominant markets of- the world, and other exporting countries continue, as ever, to take their cue from that direction. For Instance, it Is well known that stocks In Odessa have been allowed to accumulate at such arate that (he total has already reached 1,500.000 quarters, and al though It might be thought that Russian ship pers would be only too ready to take advantage of the American advance to make advantageous contracts, a good many Buss! an cargoes. which, about a fortnight ago, were "pressed for sale, have been completely withdrawn from the market, and, although It would now be possible to effect considerable sales at a rea sonable price, quotations are almost complete ly out of reach. The same applies to Argen tina, although, of course, harvest has not yet commenced, but the prospects are so good that a bumper crop Is now confidently reckoned upon, "but here again, as In Russia, shippers show very little inclination to ente'r Into for ward contracts. Business in consequence has hecn confined practically to white descriptions. and the number of cargoes of tnls description being so limited, buyers have been compelled to pay fairly stiff rates. -Groceries, Xnts. Large quantities of lumber are now arriving at Antwerp and Ostend for use during the coming year. Much of this lumber Is pitch pne, but there Is also hard wood, principally oak and walnut, and quan titles of bent and turned hickory. During 1901, the declared Importation of oak and walnut from the United States was 24,086 cubic me: ters (82.420.5 cubic feet), valued at ?028,- 03 59. in a total of f 5,175.528 02. Importers speak favorably of the quality of American lumber, and the purchase price f. o. b. New York is often lower than for the Rus sian, Norwegian or Swedish product, but the question of freights Is important. There are n; steamers engaged exclusively In the lumber trade between American and Belgian ports, as there are from Scandinavian and Russian ports; therefore, cargoes are rarely sent direct. The lumber trade of Ghent Is handled in va- ious ways. Some consignments are received direct from the foreign country, and some are purchased on the wharves, at auction, after the steamers arrive. Small dealers make their purchases through importers In Antwerp, and Brussels. PORTLAND MARKETS. ' Grain, Flopr, Feed. Etc. Wheat continues dull, with little buying re ported except for the mills.
