THE MORNING ORE G ONI AN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1902. It BIG TRADE IN FOWL Jobbers Dispose of Over 100,000 Pounds Pojujtpy. A WIDE RANGE FOR TURKEYS 3Inny ConttiRrnmcntc Sentln Too Late for TliaukjisivlnET Trndc Larse Proportion of Culls The Sagar Situation. With the close of business In the Jobbing dls tiict yesterday. It was estimated that from 50.000 to 60,000 pounds of turkey's were disposed of. Enoujrh other poultry and game changed hands to raise the quantity well above 100,000 pounds. On the whole, the Thanksgiving trade was rood, but there was the usual complaint of late consignments. "While some of the deal ers cleaned up. others did not fare so well. Meny growers and merchants In the country put oTt their shipments until the last moment, not realising that the iowls should be here at least two days before the holiday. Tho auallty of the turkeys received was not tnlform. as Is shown by the scale of prices realized. The best sold readily at 20c. but poor stock ranged down as low as 10c per pound. The quantity received was about equal to the demand, though more good turkeys could have been sold. The poorer lots were In abundance, and It was only by dropping the quotation that they were worked off. As to the cause of so many poor birds coming In this year, no one appears to know exactly, but many poultry men attribute It to the late Spring. Very few live turkeys were received during the past few days, but what came in sold easily at 1315c. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain, Flour,. Feed, Etc. Manhattan Eactcnoivcly Traded In on Announcement of Intcrborough Lease Trading Professional. NEW YORK, Nov. 26. With few exceptions, today was virtually a repetition of the first days of the week. There was the same irreg ularity, with i many Issues, under Increased pressure'. The only Important development was the official announcement of the Manhattan Intcrborough" lease. Manhattan was again very extensively traded In. aid closed with a net gain of 2 points on transactions considerably in excess of one-fourth of tho entire day's business. The only stocks that opened with a show of strength were Colorado Fuel & Iron, Which continues to be the center of a fierce conflict, and Rock Island preferred, which, aft er a brief period of heaviness, closed with a net advance of 1 point, The International list was lower, and the material decline In Reading was ascribed to disappointment over the outcome of the recent coal settlement negotiations. Early dealings also reflected much pressure against Union Pacific. Southern Pacific, St. Paul and Baltimore & Ohio, while the Industrials were very Inactive, with pronounced heaviness In the United States Steel stocks. As on the previous day, tho move In Manhat tan brought slight Improvement elsewhere in the list, but the rally barely covered Initial losses, save In St. Paul and Reading. The market bocame duller and Irregular, with oper ations altogether professional. Colorado Fuel, after a further gain of a point, reacted lis per cent and closed unchanged. Amalgamated Copper seemed to have some support, and Su gar was about steady. There was practically no news to explain the course of other leading stocks except in the railroad group, where some unsatisfactory trafile returns were reported. On the other hand, certain other standard railroad Issues showed good Increases. Several pur chases of Manhattan In 5000-sharc blocks came out before noon, and scores of 1000-share lots were traded in. St. Taul, Southern Pacific Union Pacific and Atchison were bid up frac tionally at times, but It was observed that these stocks sold off at the first liquidation elsewhere. As the day wore on, professional elements showed less Inclination to make commitments over the holiday. The weakness of Texas & Pacific was supposed to result from the Idea that that roa'd might be most afffcted by any aggressive operations of the anti-Gould In terests. The tone at the close was weak. Trading for London account amounted to about 15,000 shares, evenly divided and of an ar bitrage character. Sterling exchange relaxed slightly, demand sterling being quoted at $4 Sr.204 S7.25. Some of the active bonds declined today, but there were Issues which advanced slightly. To tal sales, $2,085,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. CIosiuK Stock Quotations.
