THB MOKNDfG OEEGONIAN, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1902. 13 LOOK FOR A CHAN Hopmen Expect Something to Happen This Week. EITHER A BREAK OR ADVANCE aiorc Activity in . the Local Field Holder ".Stronger in Tlieir VIcivs California. Growers Asli Stiff Prices: The hop market looked a little better yes terday, and dealers Quoted It stronger than Saturday. Prices are without change, choice being quoted at 251-c, prime to choice 24g23c. prime 23c. and medium 22c. Holders' continue stiff In their views. Offers of 25&C In the country do not get hops. Foreign buyers are not offering above 23c. and to do business are compelled to negotiate with dealers. The latter are selling more freely than they have before this season, as many of them have their money tied up in hops and find It neces sary to realize upon them. There is a general feeling In the trade that something is going to happen this week; that the market will either break or go better. The bears express confidence that the top has xbeen reached, andvthat a decline la Inevitable, while the bulls are equally positive that there will hp an upward jnovement, quoting the statistical position of the market .and the entrance of foreign buyers into the field. California growers are very stiff in their views. Around Sacramento; where they raise the poorest hops in the state, they are ask ing 25c. Foreign cables showed no change yesterday worthy of note. The London market has hardly opened up yet. Brewers are holding off as long as they can, and may not buy much until after the turn of the year. Receipts arc u.p to the average, and' ship ments are heavy, 1000 bales having gone Bast from Portland in the past two days. The New Tork Journal of Commerce of the 29th said: "Local dealers in some Instances claimed that they were having more Inquiries from English buyers, and It was stated that negotiations were under way for choice Ore gons at 140 shillings, equal to about 20c i. o. b. New Tork." Hops Firm at Hfew Yorlc. NEW YORK. Nov. 3. (Special.) Hops opened fairly active and the tone Is firm. Dealers report a fair business to brewers at full prices, up to 31c being paid for choice Pacifies, present crop. More attention Is paid to the 1901 crop among the local trade. Sales for .English account are noted up to 2Sc .for choice state, and 27c for choice Coast. Liver pool cables the London market firm on Coast bops. 'Hops r.t London. LONDON, Nov. 3. Hops Pacific Coast firm at 0 12&7. ' ' son for this Is that there Is no market In the Pacific Coast region for all the "sugar Intro duced there. In New Tork the price is being maintained, so we simply put our sugar Into that market to get the benefit of higher prices' PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain. Movements in the stock market today were characterized by the various Influences incidental to election week, together with other and perhaps more potent reasons. Sterling exchange reached the high est point la the present movement, some de- ' mand bills being sold at ft 87, which is within Uc of the figure "at which gold can admittedly be exported profitably. The accumulation of commercial bills over Sunday was barely equal to the, demand. Paris exohange on London declined c, while bar gold advanced 8d In London. It was not denied that some banks and firms were earnestly considering ship ments of gold In the very near future. The rise In exchange was doubtless In a great measure responsible for the check on the stock market operations, though the volume of business for the day was not lower than for some days past. Opening prices were lower, the greatest decline being In Louisville & Nashville, which sold off over a point. LesB extensive declines were shown by Atchison, Baltimore & Ohio. .Missouri Pacific, St. Paul, Union Pacific and Reading. . The demand for this latter stock was large, but off erlngs were free. Manhattan, a - feature of last week's pool operations, made a slight fractional de cline, and the other transactions were fieavy. Later in the morning fresh selling pressure developed, and some of the stocks named went lower. London bought about 10.000 shares on the decline. The Only Industrial Issue that displayed any activity was United States Steel, the heaviness of which was presumably due to reports of disturbing conditions In the steel and Iron industry. A reminder of this was furnished by American Tin Plate, which an nounced a material cut In tho price of Its products. Trading in the early afternoon was even more circumscribed and professional, with a "partial resumption of pool operations lri a few issues, chiefly Toledo, St. Louis & West ern. Traders professed to see Indications of "good" selling In Manhattan and other Gould stocks. Commission houses, as well as brokers with wide connections, were out of the market, though the liquidation In Baltimore & Ohio and Louisville & Nashville seemed to cbme from the West. In the final hour a general attack upon soft coal stocks and St. Paul brought prices to the lowest level of the day. The rally toward the close suggested consider able short covering, as wellVs a better view of the political situation, with tho result that a firmer ton'e was manifested at vthe end. Prices of bonds were' reactionary for the Important Issues. Total sales, $1,720,000. United States advanced & per cent, and old 4s declined H per cent on the last call. Closing: Stock Quotations. NEW YORK SALMON MARKET. Spot Red AlnKka Strong Chinook Out of First Hands. NEW YORK. Nov. 3. (Special.) Spot sal mon Is strong, with red Alaska talis more difficult to buy at ?1 10. The association ad vance stiffens holders' views. Sockeye talis are quoted up to $1 S7& on talis. Chinook salmon are out of first hands. Business Is shown in chums and pink, with dull trading. Baltimore' wires a. steadier feeling in to matoes. Spot Is still Irregular and easy, with buying in moderate. Sales of standard at $3 92ii net cash here. Beans are firm and standards are In -request. Apples, state gallons, arc easy at $1 00 f. o. b. factory. California oranges, fancy Valencia lates, sold up to $7 22',; per box. Choice grades arc easy at from $2 75 to $3. Lemons arc in active. . A continued firmness prevails in raisins, seeded showing an active demand on both Coast and Eastern pack. Pree sales of the latter are noted at S?;c for fancy one-pound cartons. On Coast pack, virtually nothing offers in first hands. A Coast wire reports that the seeded combine will advance c today. The report was not ofllcially con firmed at the close of the market. Local Job bers complain bitterly over the Coast delay in making shipments. Apricots, spot, unpeeled. In boxes, arc stronger at 7c. Peaches are firm, and large prunes active and firm, with light supplies. Small sizes show an easy tendency. Oregon' offerings, spot, are light and firm. Figs are less active, but firm. Liverpool cables an advance of Is per cwt. on layers. , California almonds are easy, with offerings Irregular in quality. Nonpareils are quoted at 1351c to 1454c. Walnuts are more active, with Napics firmer to arrive. Grenobles ad vanced to 11c. California stock is In light supply and mostly in second hands. ' Lost on Peaches. Regardless of tho fact that Michigan pro duced a very large crop of peaches this year. and tho fact that the growers cleaned up something like $1,000,000. there has never been a moro fatal year for those who have handled the crop. The Chicago produce deal ers alone, according to tho Modern Grocer, have lost $100,000 by buying up orchards early In the season: orchards which were then very promising, but in which the peaches went wrong before maturity. The Michigan peaches have never been so poor in quality as this year. One dealer bought up 1500 baskets at 10c a basket, and shipped them to an Interior town for disposal. A few days later he re ceived a report of sales and a check for $7 50, with a statement that it was all that could be realized from the shipment. to Hons, Wool, Hides, .Etc. Advices received here from Guatemala say that 200.000 hundred weight of this year's coffee crop were lost as a result of the eruption of the volcano Santa Maria. NEW YORK. Nov. 3. Local coffee im porters express the belief that' the recent vol canic outburst in Guatemala, which wrought havoc on the coffee plantations, will have little effect on the general markets. Last year the yield was 000,000 bags, but. In view of tho fact that the visible supply of coffee Is about 13.000.000 bags, the loss of even the wholo production would not be considered serious.
