lr THE MORNING OREGONIAN, MONDAY, QCTOBEB 27 1002; 'A AD FOR ONION-GROWERS BIG fcKOP IS THIS STATE AXD NO OUTLET FOR IT., prices in California Rule Half a Cent Les Strength of the Sal xhob Market. Saturday's trade was as. good" as could be Ex pected on a half-holiday, and price changes were not numerous. Receipts 'of 'green produce "were not large and It was well, for the de mand waa light- One car of California grapes came In, and sold fairly well, as the Oregon product on the market Yjow Is not of the "be'st. A car of bananas was unloaded Sunday morn ing, also a car of mixed produce. Yesterday's -.earners did not have much, for the Front Street houses. Tomatoes are Arm, as most of the local stock Is out of the market. Peaches are scarce. Things are not looking well fdr the, onion growers. There Is a big 'crop here and no present outlet! ' California has plenty of onions, and they are selling In San Francisco balf a cent cheaper there than here. . The only sal vation for the producer will be a warm "Win ter in California and a cool one in Oregon. There Is not much life yet In the potato mar ket. Country produce showed no change Saturday. Oregon eggs were steady to firm at 30 cents. Cheese and butter were also- firm. Recelpta of chickens were too large for the close of the week, and nearly every dealer had to carry 1 over a number of coops. The grain markets were firm here, but not quotably higher. There was very little doing In wheat, end nothing new reported In freights. The hop market was fairly active and strong at 5S2Tc for choice. No very large sales came to light. No change was made In the grocery, meat or provision lists Saturday. The salmon market continues strong. Buying is practically over for the season, but holders are firm. In anticipation of a strong Spring de mand. Sockeyes are practically cleaned up. According to an estimate of the San Francisco Trade Journal the pack of the Alaska Packers Association and the Pacific Packing & Navi gation Company total l,802,poo cases, and that of outside canneries 530.000 cases, making the total Alaska pack 2.412,000 cases, against 2,032,838 cases lastyear. It Is reported that the Puget Sound Packers' Association and the Alaska Packers' Association have offered the Canadian government $200,000 for licenses for 25 ealmon traps, to be located on tho south eastern coast of Vancouver Island, and for a five-year lease of tidal lands on the Gulf of Georgia. Besides the bonus referred to, the combination offers $2000 per annum rental for each trap. It has been stated on good author ity, however, that the Canadian' government will sell no rights. A report from New York states that there Ib talk of forming a combina tion of all the' outside salmon canning Interests on the Coest. It Is understood that It Is pro posed to capitalize the new company at 10, 000,000, and that the .plans are found to In clude 10 plants, of which options on 11 plants have been secured by the promoters. Vessels Chartered or Available for Grain Cargoes From the Northwest. . . Trading Waw the Lightest ot the Week Sterling- Exchange Is ' Slightly Higher. NEW YORK. Oct- 25. The tock . market was active and generally higher at today's opening, but later relapsed Into dullness and failed to make any response to the very favor able bank statement. In the early operations, advances were scored by the Baltimore & johlo, Atchison, St, Paul. Reading, Norfolk & West ern, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, as well as by Colorado Fuel & Iron and Amal gamated Copper. Elsewhere (ho list displayed little animation and no material changes. The Gould stocks later became a feature b"y reason of their strength, and there was tome good buying of Texas & Pacific, Wabash common and St. Louis Southwestern. The dealings In Colorado Fuel gave rise to reports of com petitive buyingj ahd the stock was again the feature of the qy In point of activity, though It closed with a fractional loss. Improvement eh own .by Canadian Pacific was due to In creased earnings, and Chesapeake & Ohio held steady In spite of an adverse showing. The strength of Cotton Oil resulted from the belief that a consolidation with a kindred company would be of great benefit to It. Only the most favorable comment was heard regarding the bank statement, and traders were at a loss to account for the selling movement which set In with its appearance. The stae meht was regarded as a very correct exposi tion of local financial conditions. The market closed somewhat unsettled, and very dull. Net changes showed Improvement over the pre vious day, but with the exception of the move ments in the special class, this including Colo rado Fuel, Consolidated Gas, North American and New York Air Brake, gains wero chiefly fractional. The day's business was barel7 In "excess of 200,000 shares. t Sterling exchange was quoted at a slightly higher figure, but no Importance waa attached to this feature. The nominal rate for call money waa 2 per cent. The Subtreasury paid out $100,000 for account of San Fran cisco, and received the same amount for trans fers in New Orleans. United States 2s and 3s advanced U Pr cent, and. the new 4a declined per cent, as com pared with the closing call of last week. Closing Stock Quotations. FOR PORTLAND Name. Flag and ns Master. From.
